I have been searching for information on my Grandfather. We have little to go on and no legal documentation of his given name.
My Mother has always said the her fathers name was: Thomas Sean Scanlon
In my research I have not run across many Thomas Scanlon's with the middle initial of 'S'. However, there seem to be a lot of John's.
My understanding has always been that Sean is Gaelic for John. Was there a practice of making an Irish name sound more American in the early 1900's? I know the Irish had their share of prejudice like many other groups have throughout history. Which made me start to wonder if Sean had been changed to John in my Grandfathers case.

Thank you for any information or input!
