I am looking for relatives of my grandmother's family. The family name, Davis, lived in Sligo. They left Liverpool, landing in Quebec in 1876 Oct, on a ship named Moravian. I have nothing else to go on,....no parish, no other family, only this family consisting of mother/ father and 5 children. No family stories of how they got from Sligo to Liverpool.

Lindell - I'm currently reading a book entitled Irish in America by Reginald Byron. He pointed out that in the time frame during which your family members began their migration, it was common for Irish familiesfrom Sligo with anny means whatsoever to take the first step toward their new futures by moving to England. Byron calls them "step migrants." They were aware that there were more jobs and higher wages in England and in Wales. The families may have stayed for a relatively short period or even for years before venturing toward America. The cheapest passage, according to Byron, was to Canadian ports such as Halifax or Montreal. Because the border between the US and Canada was so porous, many Irish were able to travel without any interference into New England, often heading for towns and cities with a reputation for favorably supporting large numbers of Irish immigrants.

I know this doesn't give you specific information about your ancestors, but it may shed some light on why they sail from Liverpool.

I know the youngest child was a baby and born in Ireland, so I am fairly confident they didn't linger too long in England (Liverpool). The baby was only an infant, born in Aug and they arrived in Oct.in Quebec, eventually going to Ontario.

I am anxious to check out your suggested web sites. Thank you so much for your help! :)
Lindell - I have addresses for a few sites that might be helpul in your search;

rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlsi/townlandscountysligo.html

genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/sligo/

search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start (This is the LDS pilot site)

I also found quite a few Davis/Sligo entries when I used Ancestry to search Griffith's Valuation 1848 - 1864. You might check to see if any of the first names match your family. If they do, you would have a starting point.

I am interested in the name Devlin. I have a Mary M Devlin in my mother-in-law's tree that I have very little info on. She was born 12 Jul in 1835 in Clare, Ireland. She was married to a David Lawrence F Gervin born 4 Mar 1841 also in Clare (d 8 May 1911 in Wheeling, West Virginia). Mary died the 18th of May 1904, also in Wheeling.

I believe Mary's parents were a John Devlin and an Ella .

Thanks,
Jodi
Hi to all the D Irish, I understand the frustration that you are having with the Davis family. I am having frustration with Dougherty family name. The Dougherty's I have been searching for were in Monticello, NY and that is where I loose them. I can't get back further than 1825. I don't have how they got to the US or which Dougherty limb they come from. Good luck on your search.
