I am trying to figure out more about my husband's family. This particular branch is being difficult and it doesn't help that it is a common name.

What I know is that Turley PHIL(L)IPS' death certificate lists his father as Abraham PHIL(L)IPS. A marriage license was found for Abraham PHIL(L)IPS and Sarah Ellen HOSTETLER on 2 Jun 1872 in Lawrence County, Indiana.

This family was found in the 1880 Spice Valley, Lawrence, Indiana census (page 12, Sup Dist 1, Enumeration Dist 7 - currently this page is missing from Ancestry). The information on the census is as follows:

Abe Phillips, 34, Farmer, bn Kentucky, specifics for parents not provided
Ellen, 25. wife, keeps home, bn Indiana, father bn Kentucky, mother bn Indiana
Hugh, 7, son, bn Indiana, father bn Kentucky, mother bn Indiana
Turly, 1, son, bn Indiana, father bn Kentucky, mother bn Indiana

According to the book Descendants of Jacob HOCHSTETLER, Abraham died on 29 Sep 1889. No location was listed. There is no record of his death in Lawrence County or in the Indiana Death Index. He is not listed in published cemetery records for Lawrence County. The Hochstetler book also says there was another son Harvey who was born in 1876 and died in 1877.

Sarah Ellen remarried in 1894 and died in 1928. Sarah Ellen Woner is buried in the Mitchell City Cemetery in Lawrence County.

I've tried to find Araham in the 1850-1870 censuses. There was another Abraham Phillips in Lawrence County married to a Saide. This gentlemen was about 10 years older and Sadie was not Sarah. Another Abraham Phillips of the right age was found in Ohio County, Kentucky. However he continued to live there until his death in 1911.

In the 1900, 1920 and 1930 census, Turley's father's place of birth was listed as Kentucky. In 1920, it was Indiana. Turley appeared to used only one 'l' in Philips at least with the military.

Any guidance or ideas would be greatly appreciated
