Stuck at a great grandfather, Charles R. Wright. Sources have him born in Indiana or Michigan around 1860. Father and mother were named Eli and Eliza according to one record. I have found a family in 1860 census (Indiana) who are Eli and Eliza who have a son, Riley. His middle name could have been Riley. But the family disappears in the next census. I pick up Charley Wright in the early 1900's which is the correct Charley (shows my grandfather as his son).

Would like to trace Charles back to his family so we can then go back farther.

Welcome, John-

Do you have more information on this family? Could you attach the census records you do have on Charles in 1860 and the 1900s? Any information on his marriage, children and death would assist us in helping you answer your questions. :)

thank you!
Kate
I am traveling right now and don't have all my info. Here is a web site my brother put up that has info. on Charles. http://home.centurytel.net/Wright/

I don't see a way to attach the census docs. The info is: 1860 census, Galien township, Berrien County, State of Michigan.
Eli Wright family. A Riley is listed. We found wedding information of his daughter who referred to her father as Riley.

1900 Census, Jackson Township, Poweshiek County, state of Iowa. Lines 41-47. Charles' son, Harry, was my grandfather.

Can't find Charles in between these times. I think the Father Eli died or was killed in the Civil War and the family broke up. I found an Albert Wright in a poor house in Indiana. His sister was working as a servant for a family in Poweshik county. This assumes that this is the correct family. If I could tie the Riley and Charles together I could establish that his is our family.

Thank you

hi John-

I found this on Ancestry, I believe this could be your Eli:

Source Citation: Side served: Union; State served: Michigan; Enlistment date: 20 Feb 1864..
It sounds good. I found an Eli in the civil war but didn't have this much information. It would fit in with my scenario of a family forced to break up. I have also found an Eliza living with two young men who could be their two oldest sons. Since I am away from home I don't remember where I found it.

The real puzzle has been to find Charles during this same period. He wasn't in the poor house with Albert. He could have been working as a hired hand. I found a couple of Charles who were working for some farmer.
Might never know what happened in between this time and his marriage.
Hi John-

I found a memorial for a possible Eli on FindAGrave, who is buried in the Little Rock National Cemetery, the date is off a little, but it could be your Eli:

Hi John-

I found a James Wright in Michigan in 1870, with a wife Elizabeth, I know they are married because it is indicated on the census that they married in October of the past year. There is also a John Wright living with them. James and John are both born in Indiana.

My idea is to try to locate all of Charles's(Riley's?) siblings and see if he is with one of them. If Elizabeth is alive, I would have guessed she would be with her youngest children, possibly living with one of her siblings, if she had them?

Kate, Thanks for the help. We have been working on this for years.

From memory I thought I had found an older woman, Eliza or Elizabeth, living with James and his wife. I think John was there too. I'll see if I can find the record I am thinking of.

Good idea to trace the children. In looking at the 1860 record it appears that the census taker marked over Riley's date with a '2' as if he had written Albert's date there. If so, that would make Riley born in 1858 not 1860.

If I find the record mentioned above I will get back to you.

John
In 1880, I find James and John living next door to each other in the same town as the 1870 census. Do you know the names of James' children?

Sorry don't know any of James' kids. We never had information about any of Charles brothers or sisters. Both he and my grandfather died young and no one kept that information.

I found the 1870 census record (Hinton Michigan), The ages and birth place look good for James and John. Elizabeth (if that is Eliza) would be 43 and not 79 as listed. The nine could be a 3 but the number 7 does not look like a 4. Possibly could be a grandmother and Eliza is with some of the younger children as you said.
Hi John-
the 1870 record indicates that James and Elizabeth were married, in 1869, so I'm taking Elizabeth's age to be 19, instead of 79, as indexed.
Yes, I agree.

The record for Albert looks good. He was just under 1 yr. old in the 1860 census and in this record he is still 9 in 1870. I will try to attach the record. It is Berrien Township, Berrien County, Michigan. Living in a Poor House. (line 28)

Hi John-

Have you looked into the possible Civil War pensions for Eli? On this site:
http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/

there is an Eli and an Elias who served in Co. D, 12th Regiment.
