I am in search of the parents of my 3rd gg George Washington b. 1821 d. 1869 Sarepta, Calhoun, Mississippi. His headstone reads, "Sacred to the memory of George Washington, Born in VA 1821, Died 1869".
Family story was that he was cousin to the president George Washington and had lived down the street from his home. This may be slightly wrong information as I have found that his first wife Jincy Halford was 1st cousin to Martha Dandridge, wife of the first president through the Halford/Dalton/Redd/Dandridge line.

I first found George Washington in Girard, Russell, Alabama in 1840 census living next door to father-in-law John C. Alford (Halford) b. 1787 NC. I then found George Washington in 1850 Wetumpka, Coosa, Alabama census living with second wife Mary Ann McEwen (d/o Kirkham McEwen) along with two of the three children from the first marriage: Francis Marion, and John C. Family story was that first wife Jincy Halford died in childbirth with baby Catharine.

With search I discovered that George had remarried in Jan. 1845 at Muscogee, Georgia to Mary Ann McEwen (McCuin), so the first wife and daughter Catharine had to pass between the census of 1840 and the second marriage in 1845. No graves have been found. I found land purchase records of George Washington and John C Halford in early 1841 Jasper and Kemper Cos. Mississippi when they made a land purchase trip together-both purchasing land. I then find George Washington in 1858 land records in Elmore (formerly Coosa) county Alabama with Francis Marion McEwen as witness (George's brother-in-law from second marriage). I next find George listed in "Choctaw Living in the Chickasaw District" annuity rolls 1857-1860 near Pontotoc county Mississippi.

George served Ballentine's 2nd Partisan Rangers for CSA in MS. I have difficulty finding George between years 1860-1869 and his death. George's 2 sons of first marriage served CSA as follows: Francis Marion Washington in 18th AL Inf. Co. I and John C. Washington in 31st MS Inf. Co. D.

George's in-laws of first marriage: John C. Halford b. 1787 NC and Catharine Brown m. 1820 Warren Co. MS b. 1795 SC d. 01 Feb 1859 buried Methodist Campground [Ragland] cemetery Sarepta, Calhoun MS. John was s/o John Halford & Nancy Dalton, and Catharine was d/o James Brown b. 1770 SC d. 09 Nov 1820 Warren Co. MS and Elizabeth d. Oct 1842 Warren Co. MS. I've tracked John Halford from NC to Barnwell SC, to Warren & Simpson Co. MS to Russell Co. AL to Coosa Co. AL to Calhoun Co. MS in the 1860 census where his grandson John C Washington along with new bride Margaret Lewellen was living with him [spelled Holford in census].

George's in-laws of second marriage: Kirkham McEwen b. 19 Mar 1802 Newton GA d. 19 Nov 1865 Gwinnett CO, GA and Mary Ann Canada b. 21 Jan 1805 GA d. 12 Jun 1889 Morton, Scott Co., MS. Jasper Kirkham McEwen was born in Gwinett Co. GA where he grew to manhood. He married Mary Ann Canada in Gwinett Co. GA, daughter of Jesse Canada and Sarah Jones. His wife Mary Ann was born 21 Jan. 1805 in GA and died 12 Jun. 1889 in Morton, Scott Co. MS. They then moved to Meriwether Co, where they lived for two years before moving to Alabama in 1836 where they settled on the Tallapoosa River in Tallapoosa Co. ALA, about 14-miles south of Dadeville. In 1844, Kirkham moved to Coosa Co. (where his daughter Mary Ann met George Washington, a widower with two children. Mary Ann and George Washington married in Muskogee Co. GA in 1845 before returning to Coosa Co. ALA.) Jasper Kirkham McEwen was a Millwright/machinist/mechanic by trade, as were most of the McEwen men. He was also the Justice of the Peace for many years when he lived in Alabama. He was also a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
In 1855, Kirkham moved he and his wife to Calhoun Co. MS and then to Lowndes county before returning to GA where Kirkham died.

In the 1850 Wetumpka, Coosa, AL census both sets of George's in-laws are living side by side: the Halfords and the McEwens, who are both ex Justices of the Peace.

Our DNA testing tells us that we are 4 steps from the nearest Washington surname, but we have approx. 20 matches to Magee, McGee, McGehee, McKee, McGhie etc at 12, 25 and 37 panel tests. There are other surnames with multiple matches at 25 or better markers: McTiernan, Cox, Boice, Williams, Fitzhenry, McTiernan to name a few.

It is written in "Early Alabama History" that Betty Washington, sister of the president is connected to the McGehee family. I am thinking that perhaps old grandpa George may be connected to them in some way.

So if you're tired of crossword puzzles, try solving this 140 year old family mystery!

Terrie, have you asked for someone in Coosa AL or Gwinnett GA to do lookups in their Heritage Book? I've had good luck thru USgenweb postings. Martha
Yes I have and I was told nothing was found in Coosa Co. Alabama. Have not requested Gwinnett GA yet.

BOOK RESEARCH: 1860 Calhoun Co. MS census John C. Holford living in same household as John C. Washington, son of George. Mr. Jimmy Stribling, in his book research for the MS Dixie Rebels, found that the mother listed on John C. Washington's death certificate is Jincy Halford.

MILITARY DISCUSSION UPDATE: 09/08/2006
I have followed the trail of George WASHINGTON's father-in-law John C. HALFORD which traces back to Simpson County MS. We know that John C. Halford and G. WASHINGTON both took a land purchase trip to MS in early 1841. Halford purchased land in Jasper Co. MS, and Washington in Kemper Co. MS - their purchases were two weeks apart. We also have evidence that we are in some way related to 8 McGee (MaGee, McGhee, MeGaw, McGehee families through YDNA testing of our male descendents.
While researching early Simpson Co. MS records, I came across the fact that the county seat back then was MaGee, Simpson Co. MS. This has waved a huge red flag. Digging a bit deeper, I learned that there was a George Washington MaGee who served the 46th CSA along with a brother Thomas Jefferson MaGee and had lived in Marion County MS; well Marion County adjoins Simpson county. That is where my latest research leaves off...
Happy hunting! TJW-R

PRIOR MILITARY DISCUSSION:According to a roster transcribed from The Works Progress Administration Source Documents for Calhoun County, Washington, George, Sergeant, was listed in Company F, 2nd Mississippi Calvary aka Company F, Ballentine’s Cavalry – Calhoun County. On February 22, 1865, this unit was combined with the 7th Mississippi Cavalry. This George Washington shows up in Company D of the 7th Mississippi along with a lot of the people from Company F, 2nd Mississippi. This roster shows his rank in as Sergeant and rank out as Private.

CENSUS: Found George in Russell Co. AL (1840 census) Coosa Co. AL (1850 census), Elmore County AL 1858 (BLM Land Record #13576), verifying land record found for Kemper County MS 1841, and verifying death record found for Warren Co. MS (1869 accidental shooting), burial in Calhoun Co. Sarepta MS (1869) at Sarepta Cemetery. George was a Civil war soldier (Pontotoc Calvalry) and a Farmer. Found son John C. WASHINGTON 1860 Calhoun Co., MS census living in same household as John C. Halford (spelled Holford in census). The John C. Halford family lived next door to George in 1840 Russell Co. AL, next door to George's #2 wife's parents the McEwen family in 1850 Coosa Co. AL and lived in same household as John C. Washington (George's son) in 1860 Sarepta, Calhoun Co. MS census. John C. Halford probably was father of Jincy Halford, George's first wife as listed on son John C. Washington's death certificate in Pontotoc County MS.

WIFE #1 Jincy Halford is daughter of John C. Halford and wife Catherine Brown (1840 Russell Co. AL, 1850 Coosa Co., AL, 1860 Sarepta, Calhoun Co. MS). Mrs. Halford died 1st Feb. 1859 and is buried at Methodist Campground Cemetery [Ragland], Calhoun Co. MS. The Halford's must have been the first of the family to appear in MS, since George was selling his property in Elmore Co. AL in 1858.

Children of George and Jincy Halford wife#1:

Francis Marion Lee Washington b. 1840 (18th AL Inf. Co "I" also listed with Isaiah Washington and John C. Alford) married Louisa ARCHER daugh. of John Samuel ARCHER and Rosa E. BERRY of Coosa and Shelby Cos. AL.
John C. Washington b. 30 Dec. 1840 m. Margaret A. Lewellen
(John C. was in the 31st MS Infantry more commonly called "Dixie Rebels")
Catherine Washington b. 1841 (Supposed to have died at birth with mother, graves never found)

Have not found graves of George's wife #1 Jincy or daughter Catharine. May be in Coosa, Lee, Russell Co. AL, Harris Co. GA, or Jasper/Keemper Cos. MS during land purchase trip of 1841.

WIFE #2 Mary Ann McEwen, daughter of Jasper Hirum Kirkham McEwen b. Gwinnet Co GA and Mary Ann Canada. The McEwen's also moved to MS about in 1855. The Washington's were of the first white settlers in Southern Pontotoc Co. MS and bought land from the Mathis Indians or a family named Mathis that were Indian. Written in MS Memoirs. This Mathis family are related to the Miller family, whose daughter Rubie Miller married Joseph Albert Washington in Pontotoc Co. MS. Update: MATHIS' may be Choctaw Indian.

Uploading 1870 US census John C Washington family.

I don't know that the Warren county MS accidental shooting of George X Washington in 1869, recorded 1870 was that of my George Washington. George was buried in Sarepta city cemetery near his son John's home near the Calhoun/Pontotoc county lines. There is family story that George's brother-in-laws Jasper and Newton were mad at George for some reason, so George kept moving up until his death. The brother-in-laws moved after George's death to Shelby county Alabama area.

There was no estate records found. No guardianship records have been found. I've pulled the deed from Elmore county Alabama (formerly Coosa county) and Francis Marion McEwen was witness (George's brother-in-law). 119 acres, dwelling and corn crib.

I do not have the death certificates for the children James H. K. Washington, George Washington (181-1920), Lucy Ann "Louisa" Washington and Joseph Perry Washington.

RE: You wrote, “…first white settlers in Southern Pontotoc Co. MS,” citing “Written in MS Memoirs.” Is the latter a published source?
Mississippi Memoirs is a published source per Pauline O Moore Washington for insertion into her book, "The Washington's of Pontotoc County."

Now there was another John Washington b. 1806 SC listed in the 1850 US Census in Washington, Pontotoc, Mississippi 10 years prior to my family showing up on the US census in MS. He was the only other Washington as far as I know in that area of south Pontotoc county near the Chickasaw county line. I have always thought that we were related to him as he came from Alabama, had 3 daughters Martha 1834, Mary 1837 and Susan 1844 all born in Alabama, and he was living in the William W CHRISTIAN b. 1822 SC household. We also have a 25 panel YDNA match to the Christian surname that goes back to Union Co. KY.

We have three 37 marker YDNA matches to the WILLIAMS surname. On the annuity rolls you will see George living near Sloan Williams.
