Joseph is my brick wall. I know that he was born about 1800 but I don't know where or who his parents were. In the 1820 census he is living with his 20 year old wife in Gallatin County, IL. He died some time before the 1850 census. He was married twice. Not sure of the name of the first wife. Second wife was a widow named Elizabeth Mick Owen who was born in Sumner, TN and had lots of kids by her first husband. She had three children with Joseph, including my ggg grandfather, Edward F. Barnett born about 1834 and killed at the Battle of Ft. Donelson in Feb 1862. In the IL 1820 census, Joseph lives next door to an older man - David Barnett (also known as Luke)- and his known sons are also in the area. Family members of David say that Joseph was not a son according to family records. I do know that Joseph had a son named Elisha with his first wife. In the 1790 Rockingham NC census, there is a Luke Barnett and an Elisha Barnett listed as living near each other. David testified in an 1824 court case that he lived previously in Rockingham, NC. Also, he had sons born in NC, TN and KY before getting to IL. I am wondering if Joseph may be the son of Elisha who died and Joseph went west with David and his family? Then he named his son Elisha? I cannot find Elisha, David or Luke Barnett in KY or TN. There is an Elisha Barnett born in 1763 and David Barnett born in 1765. There is an Elisha Barnett enlisted in the VA militia during the Revolutionary War. And to make things more confusing, sometimes the family was listed as Barnard instead of Barnett. I am new at this so any suggestions will be appreciated!! Thanks. Laurie

Thanks for the help. Yes I have seen Edward in the 1850 census with his mother and two siblings. If I am remembering correctly, he is missing in the 1860 census, but enlisted in union army in 1861 and killed a few months later in 1862. His wife Elizabeth is in the 1860 census living with one of her children. There are land records for Joseph Barnard ( I think) and others also known as Barnards and also as Barnett. I cannot find a thing but I am new at this. I have not tried to find a probate and I should do this. Thanks. Laurie
Hi. In 1850 They are in Saline Co, IL in the town of Stonefort. Elizabeth Barnett is 50 years old. The two oldest children listed are not Barnetts but are from her first marriage. They should be Owen. Then there is Edward, Edmond, and Mary who are Barnetts. I have some info that Joseph was alive as late as 1849 (patrolling part of a road). Edward and Edmond are confusing because the names look a lot alike in cursive writing and they are interchanged in some records. I could not find Edward in the 1860 census but I did find Edmond. Are you related to this line? Seems to be just a few of us looking from what I can tell. Also, I think Joseph had three children by his first wife and I think a son was named Elisha Barnett. Not sure about the others. Thanks. Laurie
Hi again, Thanks for all your guidance. About two years ago, I posted a request on the Saline Co. GenWeb site and a wonderful man who lived there took me under his wing and sent me a huge packet of information. I am forever grateful. He could find a record of marriage between Joseph and Elizabeth in May 1836 (my Edward was born in 1836) but he found no record of Joseph's first marriage. In the 1830 census, in the home of Joseph and his first wife, there was one male under five (don't know who this is) and one male age 5-10 (this is Elisha Barnett born 10/27/1824). Joseph was listed as aged 30-40, There were also two females under age five, one female aged 5-10, and his first wife aged 20-30. So you are correct about other biological children of Joseph. I tried to "guess" who the females may be by looking at marriage records from the time, but have no idea about the facts. As for the young boy, I am stumped. I was also sent copies of plats of land with the land Joseph owned highlighted. He bought land in 1831. Where do I find the grantor grantee deed indexes? My genealogy friend also searched cemeteries and found that Joseph and his wife had no headstones. He also found no probate records for Joseph. I do have the Military records for Edward and he is evidently buried with his effects on the battlefield outside of Nashville, TN. He was 5' 10 1/2" inches tall with black eyes and dark hair. He was wounded on Feb. 15 and died on Feb 18, 1862 - bet that was agonizing. Edmond was in his unit and that is a good idea to get his records. Edmond evidently abandoned his first wife and son (in divorce papers filed by the wife, Celia Jane Elkins, the boy is named Edward M., but later he is listed as Daniel Elkins Barnett.) Jane did divorce Edmond as he took off after the baby was born in July 1859 and evidently joined the army twice getting out in 1865. There is a court record from that time when Jane tries to get $300 from Edmond's mother (Elizabeth was still alive in 1865 but not in the 1870 census) that Edmond left with her. Poor Jane was destitute. None of these people could read or write. The person who helped me became interested in a court case involving Elizabeth Barnett's brother, Robert Mick. Evidently, he was a very wealthy man who built the Baptist Church in Harrisburg, IL and also started the bank there and he died without children and without a will. Needless to say, all these relatives were lined up at the trough trying to get a share. My g grandfather, Darwin Otto Barnett, is mentioned in these records although he was just a small child. I think the suit was in 1893 or so. D.O.'s father, Isaac Edmond (went by Ed) was a school teacher and the first Barnett to read and write and he named his son after Charles Darwin! Real radical for the time. We have his school bell. I find it interesting that Edward and Edmond evidently named their sons after each other. Edmond Barnett did remarry later on and had three more children. He does have a headstone and was born on 8 Aug. 1837 and died on 19 October 1887 of heart problems and dropsy. In the later censuses, it is reported in one that his father (Joseph) was born in Kentucky and in another one it is reported that his father was born in Illinois. Unlikely he was born in Illinois in 1800. I had fun going through all of the information sent to me yesterday. He sent me info about other relatives also from Il but not Barnetts as well. I found out that one of them was killed with General Custer! Maybe one day I will know enough about "the hunt" to be able to help someone else out. This is probably WAY more information than you wanted or needed. Thanks so much. Laurie
Wow! You are fast. I have the military service records from the US Archives. I sent off for them online. I have never seen a Civil War Pension file. Thanks.
Thanks. I will do this. Have a great weekend!
