Looking for James REYNOLDS, black sheep of the clan, who deserted his wife and 3 children about 1891-3. He lived in Philadelphia, PA from May 1884 to 1891-3 (documented). Looking for his parents and those of his wife, Elizabeth RICHTER. These were my maternal ggrandparents.

Welcome, Lorry-
Do you know when James and Elizabeth were married? What are the names of his children? Did you find James on the Philadelphia City Directories?
I've attached a GEDCOM for James Reynolds that has all the vital stats. He is in the McElroy 1890 City Directory living at 914 McKean St. I can find plenty of James Reynolds in the 1870, 1880 and 1900 census but cannot attach my James to any of those listed. Elizabeth is just as elusive. I think I have her as the daughter of Charles and Marie Richter (nee Magel) in the 1880 census. I have their marriage license (barely legible) and divorce papers, and most of the info on the children has been documented. I think (family rumor) that James's mother was a Foley, but I have not done much to explore this yet.

Kate,
I've just put a reply on this discussion that gives all I know about James Reynolds. Most is documented. My reply of 12.41 pm on Aug. 9 has James GEDCOM attached. Hope this helps. And yes, I find directories very helpful and have access to Phila directories back to 1790. Now all I have to do is connect the dots. When accessing them keep in mind that the Magels (James in-laws) were oysterfishers probably on Delaware Bay and quite prosperous at it..there could be a connection with the Magel-Richter-Reynolds families.
Hi Gene and Lorry-
Looking at the PDF, I did a search at the FamilySearch Pilot site and found a record of death for a Gertrude Reynolds, who died November 2, 1889, at 8 weeks of age, parents were James A Reynolds and an Elizabeth Rhodes or it could be seen as Richter if the letters were smushed together enough. Their address was in the 27th Ward in Philadelphia, 7th and Woodland. She was buried at Old Cathedral Cemetery on November 3rd, 1889.

Gene,
Lizzie did remarry shortly after her divorce was final in July 1894: William Hoehn. After Lizzie died in Dec 1907, Hoehn married Lizzie's sister. They were living at 431 Wolf St in Phila. I'm going to check them on the census now.

Thanks, Gene, for all your work.

These are my grandfather, Robert Reynolds, and my Uncle Bill.

Lorry
Gene,
According to her death certificate, this is correct.

Gene,
Katherine Rice, dau of Charles Rice and Elizabeth Stile married Robert Reynolds in Feb 1907 and she gave birth to my mother, Catherine, on Aug 15, 1907.

I have located the 1910 census entry for Charles and Elizabeth (Stile) Rice and am puzzled by the fact that Katherine is listed as single. Also she was born in Dec 1886 in New Castle DE so her age should be 23/24. Jennie was also born in New Castle DE on Oct 1889. The rest of the children were born in PA.

My mother had told me throtherat her parents lived with the Rices for a few years after they married. I have neither confirmed or denied this. I do know that Robert, Kate, my mother, and her sister Jenny all lived in a house on Durfor street quite near the Rices and I believe my Uncle Bill, Robert's brother, lived near there too. Bill's wife Lottie Geib lived at 433 Wolf St.

Hope this is clarifying!

Gene, This is quite weird. The Richters living with William Hoehn do not come from the same Richter family that I believe were my ancestors. Neither names or ages fit. I wonder if they are grandchildren of one of the older children of Charles Richter and his wife, Marie. The Charles Richters are on the 1880 census, 197 ED in Phila. and the listing, including the Magel in-laws, is on two pages.

Is a Puzzlement!
Lorry
Gene,
I will work on Directories tomorrow. I will be doing errands tomorrow and traveling Friday, but will be taking the Reynolds part of my genealogy work with me to work on it with my daughter-in-law and my granddaughter.

Have a relaxing Labor Day weekend.

Here is James Reynolds insofar as I have been able to trace him. I am able to document his descendents but not his ancestors. Maybe it will ring a bell with someone.

Gene, Thank you! Big Q: How did you get into the Philadelphia Inquirer archives? I've been trying for almost a year now to find the story of my grandmother's murder with no success.

I'll open these files in about an hour when I have more than 30 secs to rub together. I'll get back to you then.

Thanks again,
Lorry
