This group is for all those interested in emigration from North Devon. Many left this area, particularly between 1830 and 1860, frequently heading for Canada. Large numbers of these people have been shown to be members of the Bible Christian Church.

Many emigrants from North Devon and beyond were Bible Christians, an offshoot of Methodism. Most settled in what is now Ontario,

The standard work on The Bible Christians by F W Bourne has recently been reprinted by Tentmaker Publications. There are also three good books by Sher Leetooze about the movement, largely in Canada

I'm still very interested in the ships that sailed from North Devon bringing settlers to Newfoundland, and Canada, which I believe may predate the Bible Christian emigration. I'm really sorry to have missed Tim Wormleighton's talk on the shipping records and their contents, and Mike Guegan's slide show of ships built from Barnstaple to Wear Gifford. I wonder how much more information these gentlemen could add to my research?

Of course, I would have loved to hear your emigrant's talk as well Janet -- any chance of a copy of your script?

When I was in Appledore last fall, I sat and talked with an elderly gentleman who I believe was the Landlord at the pub where I had lunch. He seemed to know quite a bit about the ships built by Devonshiremen in Prince Edward Island and told me that these ships were sailed back to Appledore as completed hulls and they were finished off in Appledore. I believe many of the ships in question were used to carry emigrants to North American, and return with raw materials.

Anything you ladies can add to this?
