I looked at the 1901 and 1911 Ontario census through Automated Genealogy and could not find. If Frederick was now born 1890 he would not be head of household for 1901 or 1911 census.

Thanks for those of you that checked on ancestry. I should have said that I've looked there also with little results

Thanks for pointing out the date errors for his parents I thoughtvi had corrected them. I have them correctly in my database will fix in ancestry

There is a Tree on Ancestry with this family. It looks like the person who put the tree up might be Sue who posted here. But the disturbing thing is that on this tree the son is shown as being born 1889 (all details as Sue has posted here) with the father born 1890! The mom Frances is shown on the tree as 1896. Each has exact dates of birth and parents' names. Now of course that is impossible for the son to be born 1 year before the dad.... So not sure what's mixed up!

Sue, I've had a look at what Ancestry might have for your grandfather, and the results are not encouraging I'm afraid.

No birth registration appears for Ernest James Fitzpatrick. I attempted the searches several ways. Only one Fitzpatrick was registered as being born in York Co during all of 1889, and that was a Thomas Henry Fitzpatrick, born in April.

A search based on solely a match to either/both parents' names (regardless of the newborn's name), still produced no results. (Such a search can sometimes work-around mistranscriptions of the original record.)

I also had a look at the 1891 census returns for Toronto. The youngest Fitzpatrick listed in the 1891 census out of Toronto was a 5 year old girl. Of the total of 36 people named Fitzpatrick listed in Toronto in the 1891 census, no one had any of the names Fred/Frederick, Frances, or Ernest. One James appears, but he is a married adult, born in England.

It remains possible that some mis-transcriptions are obscuring information on your family in this time period, however the fact that neither birth registrations nor the 1891 census gives any hint of them, seems discouraging.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to locate something for you this evening.

Sue, if your ancestor was in Ontario then you should be able to find him in census - 1891 for example. Or at least find his parents (1881, 1891 etc)

 

His birth might be registered, it was the law but many did not bother. Especially the Catholics, they tended often to just baptise in a church and not bother with civil registration

 

Have you gone to Ancestry? They have all the Ontario records

What is best way to start in Ontario? Know grandfather
Ernest James Fitzpatrick was born in Toronto
3 march 1889 and parents were Frederick Fitzpatrick and frances Pelham but have been able to find any records of such.

Dates and names are from death certificate, naturalization papers and military discharge papers in my possession.

Any ideas help is appreciated

Hi everybody.My relatives are all from Quebec but my parents moved to Sault Ste Marie in 1942 which is where I was born and my father is buried. Now in the US, I look back at the times I visited the Soo Locks and remember hearing about the fur-traders who crossed over in their canoes, then,visiting the US to St-Ignace, Mackinaw Island and all the historical locations. It all means so much more to me today.Nice to hear voices from Ontario.Also love Lorine's website Olivetreegenealogy.com. Thanks for all the warm fuzzies Lorine.

I just joined this group and at this time I have no brick wall, but I'm available to help. I live in Port Huron, MI and by descent backwards: Detroit> St Clair Co., MI., > Port Perry, Ontario> Kingston, Ontario> New Brunswick/Nova Scotia> Westchester Co., NY. My family moved into NB/NS May 1783 so were loyalist. Gradually each generation moved west and in 1857 ended up back in US ( MI Port Huron). I teach genealogy 101, 102 & 103 with emphasis on Canadian research.
