James,
It's been quite a few years since I first found the connection to Eleanor, so I don't really remember how I found it. My research started when I found my grandfather in the Sterling Genealogy and then found family in one of the Kimball genealogy books (I don't recall which one at the moment). From there, I went to Ancestry (through the library I was at) and pulled up the various links that lead to my Kimballs. In the years since then, I haven't worked on those lines, concentrating instead on family in the United States. I can see, though, from your links that there is definitely controversy. I'm fine with leaving it the way it is for my family. I think Eleanor was an incredible person whether or not I'm related, and I'd prefer to believe I am.
Some interesting websites with biographical sketches of Eleanor & genealogies (I am not recommending these sites, just pointing them out, beware if no sources are given, treat them with caution). Couple of sites that have images are interesting but no contemporary picture exists of Eleanor, just her tomb effigy.
How cool is this! Thanks for all the links Jim. These are great to have.
As you said, there are no contemporary pictures of Eleanor, but think there is one object, such as a coin with her on it. And the only relict from her is (I believe) a wedding present that she gave Louis. I can see it in my mind's eye, but am not sure how to describe it. Was it a vase?
Eleanor - Eleanor - Blanche - Louis IX - Philip - Charles - Philip VI - John II of France - Charles V of France - Charles VI - Catherine of Valois - Jasper Tudor - Helen Tudor - Bishop Gardiner - George Gardiner - George Gardiner - Lionel Gardiner - Lion Gardiner - David Gardiner - Elizabeth Gardiner (and her brother David) - David Parshall/Mary Gardiner - David Parshall Jr - James Parshall - David Parshall - Gilbert Parshall - Fred Parshall - Beaulah May Parshall - My dad - Me
I think it would be interesting to develop a bibliography for each person in your lineage, I did sort of start one on Eleanor here, can anyone add to it (book titles or internet links)? How about John "Lackland"?
It would be an interesting project to do, James. And fortunately, there are only about 50 people in each of our lineages. I'm adding the information I gather on my lineage to Eleanor on my own GEDCOM using MyHeritage. I particularly like this program because I can make reports in pdf. This is what I'll most likely send to my 10-year old great niece when I've got it all down. Having all the links and references will be great for her should she ever want to do a report on Eleanor or any of the other people in our tree, she'll have a head start. The best thing is that she's already interested in genealogy. What a great way to get interested in history!
Hello Everyone! I would love to share descendant information and meet new cousins. Here is how I am descended;
Eleanor – John “Lackland” – Henry III – Edmund Plantagenet – Henry Plantagenet – Eleanor Plantagenet - Richard FitzAlan– Elizabeth FitzAlan – Jean Goushill – Katherine Stanley – John Savage – Alice Savage – Margaret Brereton – Ursula Goodman – Roger Mostyn – William Mostyn – Richard Mostyn – Anne Mostyn – Joshua Horton – Thomas Horton – Mary Horton – John Hacket – Constance Hacket – Helena Young – Aileen Seabrooke – My Dad – Me!
Timothy, we're related through John. I recognize some of the other names, too, but they're not names on my tree. Why don't you come by the chat at some point and introduce yourself. If Caren's in at the time, she can set you up so you can add your branch to the Tribal Pages tree we're all adding to. She mentioned that she has to work this weekend and won't be around much, but come on by so we can meet you!
Hi Timothy! I have a couple of questions....We have the same line down to Joan Goushill where I am descended from her daughter Katherine. I see thepeerage.com has a daughter for Joan named Margaret. Is she the same as your Margery Stanley? Thepeerage.com also indicates that Margaret/Margery married William Troutbeck. Is this the same surname as your Thomas Torbock?
Timothy: Welcome to the group. As Melinda said feel free to come into the chatroom and we'll set ya up so you can add your line to the tree we made on tribal pages. :)
James: Same goes for you to add your lines if you want.
I am in the process of reading DEVIL'S BROOD by Alfred Duggan. It is proving very interesting - "The whole pageant and pattern of medieval life unfolds in this history of Henry II and his sons particularly Richard Coeur de Lion and John of Magna Carta fame born of the beautiful and turbulent Eleanor of Aquitaine," (front cover). It is not indexed though, but does include a bibliography and a cool map on the inside covers.
On your tribalpages you have John BOTETOURTE as a s/o of Edward PLANTAGENET, this is apparently in error, see http://www.geneajourney.com/botetrt.html, note "a".
Am just starting the book When Christ and his Saints Slept by Sharon Kay Penman. It is the first in the trilogy of the Plantagenet Family. It deals with King Henry I and his dau. Maude. Penman also has a book titled the Devil's Brood which deals with 'our' Henry II. Will let you know about it.
Her book The Sunne in Spendor, about Edward IV and Richard the third was very interesting and gave me great insight into that time period
Caren, what you told Alexandra about setting something up so she can add her line, well, that's what I was needing before. I still need something set up.
Here is what I have compiled so far as a bibliography for Eleanor, I am sure it is not complete by any means, but hopefully a good start, additions welcomed.

Deb, you should be able to access the tribalpages site. It's public with only the living hidden. Also, a bunch of us who are on the tree are often here in the chatroom. Come by and we'll help you out!
Deb, from the looks of it, you're related to Andrew Kolstee, Caren, Cathy Milioto, Maddie, and me, just for starters. In this tree, we only put our direct lineage to Eleanor, so come on by the chat. Caren is related to just about everyone one way or another, so you especially want to look for her. Come on by!
Howdy Deb! Come on by the chat and we'll help ya figure out your royal links and such! :) I've got Jennings ancestry myself and Im related to the Harrison presidents.

Where are the other people who are suppose to be interested in Eleanore? Getting tired of joining these sites, message boards, etc. and only one or two people contribute and the rest take, having no idea about sharing. This is my last contribution till other people join in. Jim.

I have deleted the 1st post. The 2cd is an incomplete list of ancestors of Aquitaine. There are repeats of persons because they are found on different family lines. I have Aquitaine ancestry on maternal & paternal lines; including Eleanor, on both. The 3rd post is a relationship chart from my Tribal Tree on Tribal Pages. I entered William I & then my name. It pulls up everyone in that line, from parent to child; only it doesn't show both parents. I count the number of 'grand's to get the number of generations to William I on any particular line. I only have the persons in that line up to Eleanor, & then added the number from her to him, since I already knew his line.
Sorry, Barbara Kim Thigpen, still don't get it. I am adding in the discussions forum an ahnentafel for Eleanor. Hopefully you can tell me where/if we differ, thanks.

Mr. Curtis' document provides a convenient restatement of the Kelley -
Kirk hypothesis, but despite its title no 'proof' was unearthed by
Kelley or Kirk or has been found since. Curtis makes much of the fact
that Dudley was listed in the NEHGS Committee on Heraldry's _Roll of
Arms_, and also that a member of the College of Arms stated, in 1953,
that Dudley's use of the differenced Sutton-Dudley coat offered
'inferential proof' of his belonging to that family.
Mr. Curtis has appended to his pdf a 'rebuttal' to some of the posts
that appeared here back in 2006 mentioning his summary. In the
'rebuttal' Mr. Curtis states that the herald's 1953 statement about the
Dudley arms was "the inspiration for my proof," but there is no
independent evidentiary value in what to my mind was a rather careless
overstatement by the herald.
> I'm told Marshall Kirk had even more evidence that was never published.
Marshall had continued to compile (in parallel with Mr. Fradd)
biographical data on the various principals, some of which could be said
to be consistent with the hypothesis, but he had found nothing
independently probative.

Alice de Lusignan Le Brun (1224 - 1291) is not a daughter of John, therefore your lineage from Eleanor fails at this point.

Come on by!

Run across a couple more bios of Eleanore:
ELEANORE OF AQUITAINE, THE MOTHER QUEEN, by Desmond Seward.
ELEANORE OF AQUITAINE, LORD AND LADY, ed. by Bonnie Wheeler & John Carmi Parsons.
