Hi Christine: I am descended from Sarah Payne who married William Holland at Holcombe Rogus on 24 Dec 1823. Also, from Susannah Pain who married John Perry at HR on 27 Dec 1743. Cheers, Thom
  • Christine Gibbins

    Hi Thom.
This looks interesting, I can't link to your names, but they could be siblings to John b. 1777 at the top of my chart. Do you know the parents of Sarah & Susannah?
    Best wishes Chris
  • Christine Gibbins

    Thom,
I see you have Westcountry Blackmores, my mother in law is from the family of this name found in Broadhembury, Devon.
    Best wishes, Chris.

Appart from my own family history I have a huge interest in Channel and Port Pilots along both sides of the Bristol Channel. If anyone comes across any Pilot I would be very interested.
  • Debbie Kennett

Hello everyone, My main interests in Somerset are the surnames CRUSE and CRUWYS which I am researching as part of my one-name study. The hotspots are Wiveliscombe and Bristol. I have lots of information on all the different lines and would love to hear from anyone with an interest in these names. My other interest is in the surname TRASK which is in my mother's line. Our Trasks are all from Merriott. I'm still searching for the elusive baptism of James Trask who was supposedly born any time between 1821 and 1827 either in Merriott or Crewkerne. I think he's the son of Samuel TRASK and Mary SWEET.

My main Somerset interests are in
Backwell - ADAMS, DERHAM, HYDE, ROGERS
Shipham - ADAMS, DAY, ROGERS, TRIPP

Thank you for the welcome, I added the Carhampton discussion as my families are all from the Carhampton Hundred but I will write a short introduction. My 2x great grandmother Elizabeth Rew was born at Selworthy (baptized at Minehead) and her parents were John Rew (baptized at Wootton Courtney) and Elizabeth Siderfin (baptized at Wootton Courtney, lived at Selworthy). The parents of John Rew were John Rew (Wootton Courtney) and Sarah Moggridge (Selworthy). The parents of Elizabeth Siderfin were Robert Siderfin (Selworthy) and Grace Kent (Selworthy). The Siderfin family was found at Selworthy, Luccombe, Luxborough, Cutcombe, Wootton Courtney, Minehead. The Kent family at Selworthy, Porlock. The Rew family at Wootton Courtney. The Moggridge family at Selworthy, Culbone, Porlock, Wootton Courtney. I have several other families also in the Carhampton Hundred - Beag(u)e, Davis, Phelp, Snow, Marton, and Vicary. I have a lot of information on West Somerset.
  • Elizabeth Kipp nee Blake

I googled Geoffrey Rew Goodwin but did not find his page. Elizabeth

Jill - sorry, I don't see your Ann Rogers as connected to mine. But, maybe someday we'll find a link.
  • M. Diane Rogers

Always exciting to find a cousin - no matter how far 'removed' though. Will certainly let you know if I find anything later.

Just remembered one of my Somerset family names!! How I could forget it is mind boggling.
I descend from William Trott of Childen Polden through Joseph Trott who came to Wales.
But if anyone out there has parish registers for Childen Polden you will notice there are two William Trotts who both have sons called Joseph any ides which one is mine.

I've got a few other Somerset websites in my favourites folder which you might like to add to the list. The Somerset PR transcriptions seem to be all over the place and I've never been able to find a single consolidated source.

  • Gaynor Steer

    Hi everyone,
My name is Gaynor and I am conducting most of my research in the Somerset, Devon and South Wales areas. My main point of interest is Witham Friary, Gare Hill and Marston Biggott, all very small villages near to Frome, Somerset, also New Tredegar South Wales where my Somerset family emigrated to in the late 1900’s and Eastern in Gordano near to Bristol also Cardiff for my husbands side of the tree.
I have 11,450 individuals recorded on my tree, which includes my husband side. I have been tracing my roots for over 30 years, long before the internet.
My main names are HUES later to become HUGHES, HERRINGTON, SMITH, NEWBURY, LAPHAM, STEER, HISCOX and HOCKEY.
I am more than happy to share the information that I have and believe me I have a lot and more that happy to help people research their family even if I do not have a connection.
    Best regards
    Gaynor Steer nee Burdett

  • Charles Beacham

Jill, I see that you mentioned NETHWAY, and I also see ROGERS mentioned. I have a marriage with very little information and wonder if you have any more information. Charles BEACHAM married Sarah NETHWAY at Yatton 8 Jan 1751. I think Sarah died in 1753 and was buried at Clevedon St Andrews. Maybe she died in childbirth??? I don't have her baptism. Maybe Hannah NETHWAY from Kenn, buried in Yatton 11 Jan 1730 was related to Sarah?? I think Charles is the first child of John BEACHAM and Susanna Avery, married at Yatton 7 May 1728, although I don't have a baptism listing. I think it is the same Charles Beacham that then married Sarah ROGERS (b June 1744, a twin along with Jane, in Kingston Seymore, to William ROGERS and Anne), married in Congresbury 1 Apr 1765.
  • Alison Smith (nee Hargreaves)

Thanks for the welcome!! I'm always looking for any information/connections regarding the following Somerset familes who are all connected through marriage; from mid-1700's onwards:

GARLAND: East/West Pennard/Ditcheat/Wraxall (and Michelmersh, Hampshire from 1870)
    BOWN: West Cranmore/Ditcheat 1740+
    BOND: Ditcheat 1740+
    HIGGI(E)NS: Ditcheat 1750+
    FISHER: West Cranmore 1760+
WAKE: South Barrow (still trying to find proof that my 5 x Gt GF married Sarah HOARE..)

    Anyone with any connections..??

    Cheers
    Alison, Swindon, Wiltshire
  • Richard Mallett

My interest is in the Malet/Mallett family of Enmore and St. Audries, who were once an important family in the Taunton and Bridgewater areas for hundreds of years starting in the 12th century. The town of Shepton Mallet and the villages of Curry Mallet and Sutton Mallet were named after them. Other places associated with this family include West Quantockshead, Blue Anchor and Easton in Gordano.

Branches of this family (with variant spellings) settled in Cornwall, Devon, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Glamorgan (south Wales).
  • MoesRubySlippers

My thanks in advance most of my research has lead me to the other side of the pond and Somerset, mostly Bridgewater on my Dads side emgrating to Canada in 1913, not 1912 as planned my great-grandmother was ill and their trip across was cancelled. Interested in any military information of UK .
  • Ursula Ann Martin

Thank you Jill for the invitation to join this group. I feel like a bit of an intruder though as my family don't come from Somerset originally.

Nice group though, will be interesting to watch.

  • Phillip Roderick

    Hi Ursala
If yu get the chance could you try and find a copy of "The Bowers of Gloucester" and read it to me online. It was privately published about 1887. So far I have found one page in the National archives.
Oh and there isn't an E in Bridgwater
  • Ursula Ann Martin

    Hi Phillip,

I'll try the local library for you and get back to you. Might be a few days though...hope that's ok.

    Ursula
  • Phillip Roderick

    Hi Ursala
I haven't a clue who the publisher was but do know it was written by one of the Bower family. I have searched for eons for a copy and did find just one page of it.
It is a very rare book, in fact I doubt that there is one in existance in any libray. So please don't go out of your way to find it.
My request was a bit tongue in cheek.

I so far only have one ancestor from Somerset about whom I know very little.
She is my 4g grandmother Sarah BARTLETT. According to census info she was born in Bath about 1797. Somehow she moved up to Lancashire before1820 when she married Thomas BOND in Preston.
I'm hoping some of the links in this group will help me in my search for her.
  • Charles Beacham

Keith - I have a Thomas Skinner, sibling of James Skinner (b 1781), both sons of James Skinner (9 Mar 1751/2) from Yatton St Marys microfilm. There is a Skinner descendant in Ontario Canada with extensive Skinner documentation. You can email me at chbeacham@aol.com. Who wa born in 1781 - Elizabeth or Thomas?
  • Ellen Ward

I'm looking for information about Nicholas Tovey, Mariner of Saint George Somerset, and his family. He left a will proved 30 June 1675. His will can be found in the Calendar of Wills in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury.
Nicholas Fouey [Fovey, Tobey, Toney, Tovey] of the parish of St. Georges in Somersetshire, England, Mariner. Will dated 9th day of January 1674; proved at London last day of June, 1675. To my brother Robert 20/- for a ring. To my brother George Whiting 15/- ditto. To my brother George Irish 16/- ditto. To my cousin Robert Whiting after my death and my wifes death a house in the Marsh of City of Bristol in King Street. To my friend Samuel Gibbons 4 pounds for a ring. To my loving wife Anne Fovey all of the rest and executrix. Samuel Gibbon to sell my estate etc. in Cecil County Maryland and to send it home to my wife. He refused to "intermeddle" and gave power of attorney to said John Ward. Witnesses: Henry Ward, John Gilbert, John Moll. [This will is prefaced by letters of administration granted to John Ward of Cecil County by Cecil, Lord Baltimore and witnessed by our dear brother Philip Calvert, Commisary General.] Dycer, 71.
  • Christine Gibbins

    Hi Ellen,
What an interesting will, sadly I cannot add any family for you, but he is mentioned on this website as Capt of the "Samll & Mary" in Isle of Wight County.

For those wondering where Saint George is, it is in North Somerset near Axbridge.
  • Linda Smith

    Greetings All,
I am researching Calder; Lockyer; Cattle; Tilly; Yendole; Davidge names in Somerset.
My Great Grandfather was John Calder (1819-1905), born in Somersetshire to William Calder (1791-1847) and Elizabeth Lockyer (1796-1847).
John Calder married Fanny Elizabeth Cattle (1827-1920) in 1855 and they sailed for America the day after they married. She was the daughter of William Cattle (1799- ) and Hester (or Ester) Tilly (1799- ). William Cattle’s parents were James Cattle (1758- ) and Hannah Yendole. Hester Tilly’s parents were George Tilly (1757- ) and Francis Davidge (1757- ).
I know that William and Elizabeth Lockyer Calder both died in 1847 and are buried in the church yard of Stoke St. Gregory. They had 7 children: Anna, William, John (my G-Grandfather), Francis, Robert, and Frederick. My Grandfather John Calder, born in Chicago, IL, was taken to England to attend a school for the sons of Sea Captains called Broken Lodge I think, returning to the states in 1871. My G-Grandfather was a sailor and towards the end of his sailing career spent around 6 years with various expeditions in the Artic searching for the Sir John Franklin party.
Any help with the dead end of the Calder/Lockyer lines, the school, and any of the other families would be greatly appreciated.

I am a descendant of Richard GIBLETT (b. c1751 Frome) who married Sarah SHEPPARD or SHEPHERD of Frome in 1783. Known children of Richard and Sarah GIBLETT: Ann (d. 1787); John (woollen cloth manufacturer of Frome, issue Henrietta and Mary); Samuel; Thomas (mar. Isabella HOOPER, issue Richard, Ann, Sarah, John, Jane, Harriet); Mary (mar. James WEBSTER); Sarah (mar. George WEBSTER); Elizabeth. Were some of this family buried in Nunhead/Camberwell cemeteries, London? Is there a connection between Richard GIBLETT of Frome and John GIBLETT who married Sarah WHITFIELD at St. Marylebone in London in 1793?
