My brickwall is Elizabeth WRIGHT (1772-1843) in Philadelphia area. She married 1st William ASHTON; 2nd Jonathan WHITE. But she came from "nowhere"; no families fit. Or I should say she "fits" one family nicely, but it's well-documented and she's not a part of it. Another Elizabeth from NJ is born 4 days before my Elizabeth, but "someone" said she died ca 1796; no documentation that I can find.

  • Gerald S. Hayes U.E.

Hi group, I have traced my mother Edna Wright's family from Ontario where I live to Weston Wright of Carver, Plymouth Mass and his parents Moses Wright and Mary Weston back to Richard Wright 1608- 1691 Plymouth, Plymouth Mass. And Have contact with family from Conetticute and Michigan.Giveing us lines to Francis Cooke, Richard Warren and George Soule of the Mayflower. I have DNA posted.
  • David Clark

Hello. I don't know where to begin on these lines because I have multiple lines, but one set are pretty married in. The married in bunch are also tied in with Wood, Hylton (in OR, but also VA/WV) and Ownbey's. Some with Rees(e) which were in VA, OH and IN. And then Haworth, Dillon and some others. Another branch goes back from Olive Orinda Wright m. to John Carlie Hosier. Her parents were Benjamin Wright and Phe(o)be Hayes and this family seems to be from VT. I have a few more, but these are the main ones.
  • Gerald S. Hayes U.E.

If I am not mistaken the Wrights of Vermont came originally from Massachusettes and are the descendants of Deacon Samuel Wright. One descendent Ebenezer and his two sons refused to sign the Decloration of Independence and the result was that Vermont remained a soveriegn nations for seven years after the Revolutionary War. He and his family had to flee to Cornwall Ontario as United Empire Loyalists.
  • David Clark

Hello Gerald. I see that your surname is Hayes. As you might note, my Wright ancestor from VT was married to a Hayes. Do you recognize this line at all? The information I have on Benjamin Wright is he was b. 26 Oct 1779 in Chelsea, Orange, VT, m. Phe(o)be Hayes (b. about 1791 in Orange, NY). I have this couple and probably their youngest son, Lyman, in the 1850 census in Chautauqua, NY. I also seem to have them there in the 1840 census along with a Landers Wright who seems a generation younger.
  • Gerald S. Hayes U.E.

    Hi David:

How are you. I'm afraid that we are not likely related. None of my family to the best of my knowledge ever lived in Vermont. As for my last name my great great great grandfather John Hayes emigrated to Ontario from Cork Ireland in 1839 to be joined later by his sister Ellen. He was born in 1823 and his father was Dennis. They were master shoemakers of the city of Cork and John was only 16 when he came. It is said of him that he was well educated as he could read and write in both Gaelic and English. He operated a successfull hotel in the city of Bellville, Ontario puchased land and continued to make shoes. In 1852 he married Anistasia Hariggan of Limerick who emigrated like so many others from the Potatoe Famine. If Phoebe's Family was Southern Irish at one time all our names were O'Hea or O' Houada. If this is true for her then thier would be a relationship.

    Gerald Hayes
  • David Clark

    Hi Gerald,
Well, that seem rather remote. I only tentatively have Phoebe's parents as Benjamin and just A Hayes both from NY in the 1760's. Benjamin Wright was the one from VT. I haven't connected him up with any other Wright's yet, but I know there a lot of them out there.

  • Jay H. Wright

Hi folks I'm Jay Wright and I'm a Vermont Wright, my grandfather was from Swanton and have been there for over two hundred years as far as I can tell.
  • David Clark

    Hello Jay,

I am interested in the Vermont Wright's. Which line are you from? I listed my details in a conversation below back in January. Let me know if you need any other details.
  • Jay H. Wright

Hi folks, sorry I haven't commented since I posted - very busy. I'm a Wright/Olmsted, my grandfather George was born in Swanton Vermont where there are quite a few Wrights. His father (George) was killed in a railway accident and my grandfather and great grandmother Louis had to move to CT. The family immigrated into Vermont during the late 1700's from New Hampshire as far as I can tell, they originally landed in Massachusetts. I'll have to drag out my research and post it. There are still Wrights in Swanton who have descended from farmers, quarrymen, and many are of my great great grandfather Bradley's (b about 1848) line - he had several siblings.
  • Jay H. Wright

My Grandfather was George Bradley Wright b 1893.
  • Gerald S. Hayes U.E.

I thought I had no family in Vermont, but I was wrong. It seems the third Adam Wright in my family moved from Plympton into Vermont and started a line there. So his descendents in Vermont will have Mayflower ancestory. I have Dna posted here and I would suggest to any Wright male members to do the same. Family tree dna is the company I use. Then link the results to the Wright DNA Project. We have our family tested here in Ontario,Canada matching with the Wright family of Litchfield, Conecticut. We have a large line in Michigan and California as well. Descendents of Richard Wright of Plymouth, Mass
  • Gerald S. Hayes U.E.

My research shows that Adam Wrights descendant all moved back to Plympton, Plymouth. He remained in Vermont for the remainder of his days.
  • Michelle Robillard

For more info please see my blog.
  • Gerald S. Hayes U.E.

Louise Esther Wrights father Joseph Emigrated to Boston from England in 1890. Joseph and Marie born in Canada in 1866 had the following Children. Mary, Ida, Louise, and John. That is all the info I have. Thank you.

  • Douglas M Wright

Hi everyone. My  name is Douglas M. Wright (Doug). My Wright line goes back to James Wright b. 1748 who I think is son of Dr. James Wright b. 1725 in old Nansemond Co./Norfolk Co. VA. I am searching for Wrights with lineage back to these counties in the early-mid 1700's or earlier to compare records and yDNA. Examples of related first names are: William, James, Henry, John, Matthias, Miles, Stephen. However, these are just examples. I am not picky on names as far a DNA test is concerned. If you or anyone you know can trace their Wright lineage back to these counties in VA in this time frame, please contact me or have them contact me. If they fit the bill, I am offering a FREE DNA kit to Y37 !
  • Gerald S. Hayes U.E.

I would advise that any wright family members who are thinkin of or who has tested for dna do so at famlytree dna and then linc your results to the Wright DNA Project. This will give you others who have tested with you matches that you may contact cousins. My Wright family is of Plymouth Mass. and arrived 1629. There are over 100 differant families With the name Wright.I have our dna posted on my page.
  • Douglas M Wright

I completely agree with Gerald's comment regarding the use of FamilyTreeDNA for testing and posting the results to the Wright DNA project. The free kit I offered in my previous post will is fact be ordered through the project and a condition is that it be posted there. For your easy reference to the project, here is the the site:

  • Nancy Fowler

Doug, Are you the Doug related to Mel and Norm Wright?
  • thelma jo rich

Dog My Grandmother was Sally (Sarah) Martha Wright I will post the male members here They go back to The time frame you are talking about I think. They came here from England.

  • thelma jo rich

sorry I meant Doug,LOL not dog..My brothers name was Douglas
  • thelma jo rich

I am descended from James Wright he was born about 1677 I think In England..He and his wife Mary came to America and helped found the Quakers My Grandmother was a wright
  • Douglas M Wright

Thelma, don't worry about the "dog" misspelling. It happens all the time. Does your James Wright go back into VA? If so, what county? I sure wish it was Nansemond or a nearby county. Regardless, it would be great if you have a male in your line who could take the DNA test and post it to the Wright DNA project if one has not already done so. You have an old and historic line that would contribute a lot. Contrary to popular thought, the Quakers were not just in PA, but VA, NC and other states in the early days as well. They were great record keepers.
  • Douglas M Wright

Nancy, I am sorry, but I am not related to Mel and Norm Wright. Doug
  • thelma jo rich

    Hi Doug,
Yes some of the wright family did live in Va James Wright passed and was buried in Frederic Co Va.in may 1759his Father was born in England in 1631 His mothee was Penelope Leigh born 1628 they seem to be all through Va, Pa , MdThomas Wright James son was born in Chester co PA Died in Loudon co Va.1760
  • David Clark

Let's not forget how many Wright's are of the same name, especially a common name like James or William. I have two dozen James Wright's and none of them match the one mentioned by Doug but one of mine does match Thelma's. So I would encourage anyone mentioning ancestors or relatives to indicate some other aspect (such as birth or death date, location, immediate family members) to eliminate ambiguities. Thanks. =_)
