Researching Bowyers from Maryland/Virginia area around 1800. Son William. Father's first name may Thomas.
  • Robin Borchers

    Hello,
I am interested in finding any information on my family branch, the Hawvers. They were in Maryland in the Frederick County area, near Hagerstown. The parents' names were Daniel H.(1793-1853)and Elizabeth Browne Hawver (1797-1880). Their daughter Susannah Hawver, who was born in MD, 1-27-1819, She and her siblings and parents came to Ohio around 1833 by covered wagon. I am interested in finding out more about this family and their earlier relatives if anyone can help. Thank you!

Looking for information on the ancestors of Zadock MESSICK born about 1765 on Eastern shore of MD and his wife Dorothy PAULS born about 1775 in Dorchester Co,MD. They were married 4 August 1790 Dorchester Co,MD.

Looking for a baptismal or church record of the birth of William E. BRADSHAW born 1801 Somerset Co,MD,son of Jacob BRADSHAW born 13 Oct 1780 Somerset Co,MD(Richard BRADSHAW/BRATCHER and Arabella TYLER) and Levenia EVANS born 1790 MD (Richard EVANS and Keziah EVANS). There is some controversy about whether or not my William is in fact their son. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  • Dennis Hawver

    Hi, Robin,
It's been some time. Good to hear from you. We have made progress in tracing back our mutual line. I show Daniel H. Hawver's parents to be:
Peter Hauver/Johann Peter Haber. 3/1/1754-12/1835, and
    Hannah Casebier/Kassbehr, 1756-?
    Peter Hauver's parents were: Jorg/George Hauver/Heber, 1730-1880, and
    Anna Susannah Harmon, ~1732-~1800
Jorg's father, we think, was Daniel Hauver, one of the origianl immigrants.

Have you checked on any of these?

    best,
    Dennis
(I'll copy this to the Hawver Group for their info.)
  • Robin Borchers

    Dennis,
I have found three other family trees that list Rebecca Sneider as Peter/Johann's wife. Have you seen that or encountered it? Did he have more than one wife?
  • Robin Borchers

    Dennis,
Oops, change that to the other trees showing Rebecca Sneider to be the spouse of a George Hawver born in 1769. They are shown as the parents of Daniel H, the father of my Susannah.

One of my brick "walls" is the Walls family, possibly from the upper Eastern Shore. Julia Ann Walls married Samuel Mallalieu. Their children were born around Millington, Md., in Queen Anne's County. I know very little about Julia.
  • Dennis Hawver

    Robin--
I moved our conversation over to Hawver Families, where it seems more relevant (and more like to draw some new respondents)

I am most interested in the groups of Catholic Marylanders who went to Kentucky 1770's to 1790's. Suggestions for best sources for research on this group?
  • Anne

    Sherri:

I don't know how helpful this is, but I have found that many of the early families from the St Marys area that migrated into Kentucky settled in the areas of Breckinridge and Grayson Counties (in addition to the well-known destinations of Nelson, Washington and Marion Counties). I know that one branch of the Clarke family (down from Robert Clarke the Surveyor General) did this. Also you will find the names Combs, Mattingly, and many others.

I just wanted to tell everyone about a seminar on 10/17/2009 at Washington College in Chestertown (Kent Co.), MD. It is called "Destination Delmarva" and will feature 8 different presentations on genealogical topics pertinent to the area. It is co-sponsored by the Maryland Genealogical Society and the Delaware Genealogical Society. More information can be found at MGS or DGS websites or at www.colonialroots.com.
  • Rick Elgin

I was looking for some help.
My gr. grandmother was Caroline (Callie) Fritz. She lived her entire life in Carroll County, MD. She lived from 1877-1960. In 1896, she had my grandfather out of wedlock and raised him for a few years in her parents home. She married Edward Ricketts in 1901 who abused my grandfather, so she contacted his uncle in IL who came and took him in to raise.
Caroline and Edward had 3 children, Clyde, Bessie & Ralph Ricketts. I do not know whatever became of them. What I am looking for is a picture of my gr. grandmother Caroline and someone who may have information on the Fritz/Mopps families of Carroll Co., MD area.

    Thank you,
    Rick

Another brick wall I have in MD. is who are the parents of William Bowie who married Ann Card in Frederick Co.,MD. in 1788?

We believe Ann Card is the sister to Mary Card who married George Windham in St.Mary's Co.,MD. in 1783. We think their father was Benson Card.

    Thanks for any information!

Hi -- I have Offutts, Pritchett, Odle,  Barnes, Price, Crawford, families in Maryland.  Most in Montgomery County, some Baltimore and Frederick.  -- Barnes was Leonard BArnes who married Nancy Price in Frederick County -- both are brick wall ancestors - no clue to parents.

  • Patricia Andersen

That would be great -- I don't know of a Glaze connection yet, but I follow all of the Offutts - or try to.

  • Sharon Attaway Brogdon

I am looking for information on a plantation in early St. Mary's called "Attaway's Purchase" that I've seen in family wills, etc. My Attaway family came about 1635 some say on Ark or Dove, but no proof. They did marry into some families I've seen listed as passengers. Any thoughts appreciated.
  • Dave Cissell

    Sharon,

"Attaway's Purchase" does not seem to have been one of the earlier land patents.

It is mentioned in the will for John Bond in The Maryland Achieve records in Liber 30, folio 815, and dated 13 Jan. 1760"

"....To wife, Elizabeth, for life, Mosely [Moulsley], the plntn. I dw. on with Attaway's Purchase, & on her d[eath]., to my son John Bond......

To son John, a slip of land purchased of Wm. Bullock next the plntn. I live on on the crkside, 1/4 of Burlington, ..... "

I believe this was in St. Clements Hundred, somewhat to the west of present day Leonardtown.

I think both "Moulsley" and "Allaway's Purchase" were probably each 100 acres in size.  Based on John Bond's will, they were likely adjacent to one another and maybe close to "Burlington" as well.

The best source for land record information of this type would be Peter Himmelheber at the St. Mary's County Historical Society.  I would strongly recommend contacting him, if you have not already done so.

    Cheers.

  • Sharon Attaway Brogdon

Thanks for your help. Some of the Wills I have but hoped I could find exactly where Attaways Purchase might be. I also have a grant for land in Nancemond, NC in 1600s. I will contact the person and links you suggested so maybe there is something I didn't find in Salt Lake.

Timothy, I also have some Elders in my tree but they were in Alabama and mid 1800s. Let me know if you are interested.

  • Sharon Attaway Brogdon

Timothy, I don't know much, but her name was Elizabeth Elder, b. 1837 GA, m. John Lumpkin Watterson 1858 Russell, AL. They both died in TX. I have not found a burial for her but do for him. They had 7 children: Dora, James Warren, Mary, John Jr., Dave C., Julia, and Susan. I do not have parents for Elizabeth (Lizzie) Elder.

    Hi!

Here are the surnames I'm looking for, so far, in MD.: BOWIE,CALLAWAY,CARD,DRAKE,HEARN,HINKLE,MORRIS,PLUMMER & WINDHAM/WINDOM. If you're looking for the same names please contact me.Maybe we can find a link. Thanks!

  • Sharon Attaway Brogdon

Thanks Timothy, Bobbie Jones and I have been searching together for years. Maybe someday we'll know for sure how Elizabeth connects to the Elder family.
  • Sharon Attaway Brogdon

My thanks to everyone who emailed me information on the Maryland Attaway family. It does appear that name died out in MD so don't know how my fellow researchers came to the conclusion that our NC, SC people came through MD. Unfortunately they don't have sources for their conclusions. Back to the drawing board:-)

I'm returning to my research on my Shaw line from Charles County, Maryland. Particularly, James Shaw (1688-1718).  As the information provided on the trees posted online does not jive with my own research, I am looking for anyone who can substantiate that this James Shaw (m. Margaret Thompson) was born in Scotland and a transported Jacobite prisoner and indentured servant or was born in Dorchester County, MD rather than Charles County, MD.  Basically, there were SIXTEEN James Shaws transported to Maryland/VA in 1716 and I don't think he is one of them. I am 99% positive that this James Shaw was born in America.  I am also about 99% positive that the James Shaw from Dorchester County is one of the sixteen and not the one of my line. So, if anyone out there can support or debunk these conclusions, I would appreciate hearing from them.

    Thanks

    Kate
