I am just about to complete the DNA Methodology and Analysis course and of the five DNA courses, this course, by taking me back to my DNA test results, has made my DNA results quite useful in my research.
looking forward to new courses in DNA, Scotland and Italy especially but while I wait I am researching about 1800 passengers from two ships my parents came to Australia on in 1911 and 1912 to see if and individuals or family groups knew each other prior to departure or after arrival in Australia. This is an estimated three year project but has already revealed three families who have links to my ancestors on my maternal side. Keeps the mind active.
Since the announcement of a DNA certificate I was interested, having completed the available DNA courses, how this certificate course content would develop and how fellow students would be handled if the certificate required modification of any DNA courses previously completed by students. Now, we have advice on a new course which looks both interesting, challenging and appropriate for inclusion in the DNA certificate but surely NIGS already have an overall vision of the DNA courses that will make up the certificate. After all, this would enable current students to purchase an appropriate course package rather than either purchasing one at a time or guessing how many they would need.
I don’t think this is unreasonable as I am sure that all students who have completed either all or any of the DNA courses that have been on offer to seriously consider completing the DNA certificate so why not let us know what NIGS intends including?
Don’t get me wrong I enjoy the courses, how they keep my brain alive and how I might use my acquired knowledge to help people in my community with their research as well as my own research projects aimed at learning more about my ancestors.
Cheers and thanks for another course of interest but why couldn’t we have more notice?
Hi Brian. Yes, we are working on new courses that will be included in the new DNA Certificate when it is released. We are releasing the new courses as they are completed for those who want to get a head start. More courses are still in development. The courses to be included in the DNA Certificate have not been announced yet.
Thanks for that information but couldn’t potential students know the proposed content of the certificate especially the DNA specific courses so we know how many more we need to complete and the best package purchase that is appropriate.
I have this week commence the latest DNA course on the analysis of DNA articles and my initial feeling is that this is another invaluable course which as with the last DNA course introduced will add to my research. After reading the course notes on the first few modules and completing assignments I already have gained knowledge that will aid my research.

i am sure I am not the only student waiting for the final DNA course to complete the DNA certificate but I think it is fair to say we are all anxious to get our teeth into it and finish our DNA meal.
Yes, I have a big appetite and would like more Scottish and Italian courses for dessert.
Thanks for that information. I am sure there are quite a few fellow students who are looking forward to enjoying the final DNA course especially how helpful the last course was.
While I like many other students await the final DNA course I would like to hear from those of us who have used DNA matches as a way of discovering more about our ancestry and even finding people you had no knowledge were in some way related to you. Have you had any success? I must admit that my matches have been distant cousin and sadly had either no tree or one with only a few people on the tree.
I still think DNA tests can help but just wondering if my experience is common.
Brian: It depends on who is testing. Some just want to see their ethnic percentages and are not interested in tracing their ancestry. Others attempt to track all matches.
I have used DNA matches to confirm my paper research, and I have confirmed a linkage by DNA that I haven't found documents to prove yet. It encourages me that I am on the right track. :)
Don't get discouraged. Your DNA work may help someone else confirm their parentage.
WOW, fabulous news and I am registered and looking forward to this course as the outline indicates some connection to the use in law enforcement and corrective services areas that I had worked with in my pre retirement life. YouTube Video REPLAY!
Enjoy a special aspect of our Student Life at the International Institute of Genealogical Studies by joining us over on our new YouTube channel with our featured speaker, Jennifer Roodzant of DescendantGenealogy.com, as she shares a brilliant way to sort and discover DNA matches quickly with graphing on Gephi.org. This session was hosted by Gena Philibert Ortega during our monthly Student Lounge event in October. Expect to see more of Jennifer at GenealogicalStudies.com in the future! DNA Discovery Using Gephi video is on our YouTube: https://youtu.be/IRhDTOAYjJA
Blog: http://blog.genealogicalstudies.com/2022/10/dna-discovery-using-gephi/
Note: Gephi is a graph and visualization platform that quickly and efficiently clusters shared matches into genetic networks. Say goodbye to the long days of sorting matches! You will leave with a toolkit for rapidly clustering matches in Gephi to identify the shared most recent common ancestors.
