My mother's maiden name is Shoemaker. I have traced the family back to the early 1800's. Family tradition has it that the family is of German origin and the name was spelled Shumacher. Still researching.

    Hey Claude,

If Shuman/Schumann/Shewman are rooted in Shoemaker (or reverse) then I would say yes. I have not seen a relationship with these names, however. Honestly though, it may be more advantageous to you to create a separate group for these names. cv
  • Cheryle Hoover Davis

My Shoemaker family lived in Rockingham County, Virginia, Brock's Gap and Fulk's Run area.
  • Wanda Kay Newton Gray

My Shoemaker clan is closely allied with the Vanderpools and I was told we were of Dutch-German heritage. The first record I have is William Riley Shoemaker 1775-1847 born in Maryland and died in Virginia, married Phebe Ann Spencer. One child Jacob 1816-1902 (in Kentucky) who married Katherine E. Kaiser and had a son Andrew. Andrew 1845-1934 married Margaret Evelyne Baker and fathered David Thomas 1872-1928 (South Lebanon, OH). David was my grandfather. He married my grandmother, Phoebe Evaline Vanderpool and they lived in the Fincastle, Lee Co., KY area.. My mother was Laura Emily Shoemaker Newton. I have more concise dates and other children's names on some of these if you are interested.

I want to thank everyone for your post to the wall and discussion forum to date. A good start, I think. I also wanted to thank everyone for posting you ancestry to the group. If I may ask, could those who posted your ancestry to the wall, re-post your info to the discussion Forum.

I ask this for two reasons:
    1. Since the newest entries to the wall are listed first, your entries may be missed by new folks when they join the group (especially several months down the road.
    2. If someone has a response to you posting, The replies will be listed with your posting. It's not always easy to follow a thread on the wall.

Hopefully, we will all be able to make some significant breakthroughs on our research.

My Shoemaker family originated in Pennsylvania, but by the mid-1700's had settled in Salem county, New Jersey. From there, they migrated westward and are found in Butler Co., OH, Vigo Co., IN, Tazewell, Washington and Stephenson counties, IL, and Gage Co., NE. Feel free to peruse my family tree website...perhaps we're connected! Here's the URL: www.kdvkfamilytree.freesitespace.net. Use the Name Index to find the Shoemaker's.

  • Troi Shumaker

My Shumaker/Shoemaker/Shumacher relatives have been traced back to Germany in the 1500's. I would like to do more parallel branching out at this point, to see how many states my ancestors have covered.
Do any of you have family trees on-line that you could post the links to? Mine is:
