Hi, Im Gary Powell from Tx., and Ok. My Powell lineage is from Ky, Tn, NC, and Va. I have researched back to my 3rd GGF "Levi Powell" born 1799 in NC, and died around 1862 in Knox, Co. Ky. His second wife was Ann Law's, first wife is unknown, whom he had most of his children, but My 2nd GGF he supposedly had with Ann. Just looking for his parents and any other info available.
  • Dae Powell

    Hello Gary, and welcome!
I have two Levi POWELLs, but they are from VA and about a century before yours. Perhaps you may connect to one of them as your researches reveal further grandparents. I hope so.

Just by way of very quick intro ... I'm researching the descendants and ancestors of Pearsall Brush POWELL (b 1798) s/o William POWELL and Abigail BRUSH of New York. I'm especially interested in continuing with William's ancestry - seeing as it took me over 13 years just to find him!
  • Dae Powell

    Hey Jeannine,
You should find a few POWELLs in the Long Island Genealogies. Not my lines, but I've seen several in there that helped others.

    Kathleen,
I'll put this into the database. My POWELLs were in NE, too. I'll poke around a bit and see what I can find for you.

I invite you to read and join my discussion in the Discussion Forum. Because Powell is a rather common name, we will find Powells scattered all across the US whose date of immigration will vary widely. I am hoping to find others who are familiar with a line that settled first in Robeson County, North Carolina in the 1700s and later migrated into Florida and Mississippi.

My known ancestor is Joyce Powell who married John Johnston probably in GA
about 1772. Her father (some say older brother) was William Powell and mother was named Elizabeth.

William Powell of McIntosh Bluff was given a Spanish Land Grant in 1795 at McIntosh Bluff for lands on the west and east sides of the Tombigbee River. In his request for the grant, William stated that he had lived on the property for ten years without a title or deed and therefore desired a grant. He had come to Alabama in 1785 from Effingham County, Georgia (just above Savannah), having owned land in Effingham County on the Ogeechee River. William's land was located at McIntosh Bluff on part of the property now owned by the Olin Corporation. The land given to John McIntosh by the British in 1775 was down river from William's land by at least a half mile. John Johnston was next neighbor to William Powell, just down river. Johnston was married to Williams's sister Joyce Powell. below Johnston's was his son-in-law Cornelius Raine. It was in Cornelius' home that Aaron Burr ate breakfast after his capture at McIntosh Bluff in 1807. Cornelius property extended to Hell Cat Lake. William Powell was then one of the very first settlers, having arrived in 1785, not only of Washington County but also one of the earliest white men to move into the area that would later (1819) become Alabama. He had a son Elijah and a son named James. It is very likely that William was the father, not only of John, Elijah, and James Powell, but also of Theophilus and William Powell, William owned land on both sides of the river and no doubt traveled freely on the beautiful Tombigbee. John Snowden Powell of Bates Lake at Malcolm, never realized that he spent the best and happiest years of his life within the shadow of the place where his great-great grandfather had put down roots as one of Alabama's very first settlers in 1785. In fact, a circle was made by the travels of the earlier John Powell who left McIntosh Bluff for Oven's Bluff on the Tombigbee River, then up the Alabama River to Packer's Bend, then his son Picnckney moved to Brooklyn in Conecuh co. and his son, John Cary moved to Calvert and his son, John Snowden moved on up to Malcolm. John Snowden always spoke of his ancestors as being from Brooklyn, never realizing that, although many of his ancestors were from Brooklyn, his oldest Alabama ancestors were from neighboring McIntosh bluff.

    Hi Clifford!
Welcome! My POWELLs, at least on me Da's side, have a Wales-English connection, too. Who knows, research may find us cousins. I think me Mum's POWELL lines are strictly British, but I'm not sure if they were in Herefords.

    Hello all,
I've traced my POWELLs back to Thomas and Hannah POWELL, 1790s Burlington, NJ. The POWELLs continue in NJ to this day, so there are lots of us all over. I am looking for others who might have more information.

    Thanks,

Just joined...my "Powell Line" goes back to Long Island Ny in the late 1600's. Hoping to gain more information and also the Quaker Connection...
  • Dae Powell

    Welcome Ron!
Your POWELLs are well-documented there. I looked for mine in the Long Island Genealogies, but it is a different line. Whatever I find that might connect to yours I'll post here.
  • Dae Powell

Gosh, Ron. I rec'd something todae that might help you from Mikki.

    Hi Dae

I was given your web site link in the AOL genealogy room. I noticed that your surname is POWELL. I am also searching POWELL genealogy. My Mother's maiden name was POWELL.

The best I can tell is that this line goes back to a Thomas POWELL, who settled in Bethpage, L.I., NY after buying 15,000 acres of land from three different Indian tribes for £140 English pounds.

Are you of the same POWELL Family? If so, I would like to exchange information.

I go back through my grandfather George; his father Edward Frost POWELL; his father William Bishop Bound POWELL; his father Obadiah POWELL; his father Moses POWELL. I have not yet found out who the father was of Moses, and hope maybe you could help.

These families started out at Bethpage, LI, NY, and Moses moved the family to Westchester/Dutchess Co. area, and then to Stillwater, Saratoga Co., NY.

It is thought that at one point, Frost POWELL settled in Steuben Co., NY around 1810-1815 as my gr-gr-grandfather William B. B. POWELL, was born in 1819, and at that time there were some POWELL's in the towns of Hartsville or Hornell, then some of the family moved back to Stillwater, while some stayed in Steuben Co.

I believe it was because Frost POWELL's first wife had died and he remarried and had more children and his older son from the first marriage stayed there, while Frost remarried either before or after he left there; later Frost and William B. B. left Stillwater and eventually settled in Wisconsin.

My gr-gr-gr-grandfather Frost POWELL moved his family to Waterford, Racine Co., WI along with him, my gr-gr-grandfather, William B. B. POWELL, who married Mary Anne SPROAT, d/o of David C. SPROAT and Sarah KITTREDGE SPROAT.

David was b ca 1795 Albany, NY; Sarah born Hinsdale, MA ca 1800; they married 1819 in Dalton, MA and moved to Fair Haven, VT within a few months after their marriage. In 1844, David move his family to Waterford, WI.

I hope some of this information will help you to find if there is a link between our POWELL lines.

    Thanks again for any help.

    Mikki

    Dae,

I have noticed that some people moved around a lot while others stayed in one place during the 1800-1900s. My Powell line is from Georgia but I don't know if that is where they originated.

Do you have information about your Powell's ethnicity? Immigration led to intermarriage with Irish, English, Natives, etc.

    Thanks
  • Dae Powell

    Hello Linda,
My POWELLs originated in Brecon, Wales. The migrated to London, Virginia, Ohio and from there all over the USA. Aye, they intermarried with nearly every ethnic group I can name.

I am searching for a branch of the Powell family who lived in Coventry, England in 1800. Particularly the son, John Thomas, born 1807.

I have had reasonable success tracing data up to Archibald but beyond him is a blank. I am fairly confident he traces back to the "Long Island'' Powell's but am missing that link. Any help would be appreciated. Again for clarity below is a brief overview

Hello all, my great grandmother Kittie M Powell,  was born Sep 13, 1875 and died Dec 28, 1953. She married Elias Milton Harrington and resided in Robeson county their entire life. They had five children one of which my grandmother (Ellen) who married into the Andrews. Anyway, i have hit a wall when it comes to the Powell side of the search after her.  I found some info that her parents names might have been Ailey Stanley and Nicklos(?) Powell.

  • Dori Emerson Lloyd

My Powells were in Jones County, GA, early to mid-1800s. Caroline Powell (b 1848) m. Andrew Jackson Whitehurst in 1866. Her father was John Powell Jr. (b1810 in VA) and his  father, John Sr born in VA.  Would love to know if this is true nor if it's just pooled Ancestry.com ignorance...  Of course, we all have a "family story" of Native American heritage, and mine was that my grandfather's grandmother was NA.  This was way before we stared looking and didn't even know names--but when I did look, there was Caroline Powell, right in the correct spot...  Can help but notice the strong NA "Powell" names in our history--any ideas?  Thanks!

Looking for information on an Elijah Powell (a mulatto) who was b)~1778 in NC and died 1835 in Clay Co., Kentucky. Myself and a few cousins believe this may be the Elijah Powell in Johnston County, NC. Perhaps the descendant of Stephen Powell and Mary Jeffries from Surry Co, Virginia clan. Any help is appreciated. I have done autosomal DNA testing if anyone is interested, you can find me on Gedmatch.com A075707 and let me know you're a match if you are! This line is a brick wall for me.

  • Curtis Powell

Hi.  I'm brand new here.  Philip Powell, (Reading and then McVeytown Pa d 1743) is my G4.  John Philip is G3, Daniel is G2 and John Henry Powell(who is quoted in the Memorial History book) was my Great-Grandfather.  So far, it seems that Philip's parents are not proven.  John and Margaret Powell of Paxtang, Dauphin County (was part of Lancaster County at the time) are good candidates.  Note that Philip named is fist two children John and Margaret.  Some of John and Margaret's children (John, William and Malachi) I believe are better tied to Paxtang and the parents.  I would love to concretely answer this question.  John, and apparently Margaret go back to some really cool early Pennsylvania history.  I would be willing to do the DNA thing if it would help.  I know very little about that though.  Anyway, if there are other Philip descendents here, or others researching this line, I would love to talk with you.  Curtis Powell

My ancestors come from Mangotsfield in Gloucestershire and some of my family still live there. I've researched back to Obadiah Powell (1728-1798) and have great fun doing it. My grandparents were the Hughes (Gloucester), Wall (Gloucester/Worcester) and the Clements (Wales).  Happy to share and learn from anyone looking at the same lines.
