My Cox family has so far only traced back to my gg grandfather. His name was Robert M Cox, and he was born in Kentucky, sometime around 1814. He married Frances Adeline Garrison in Adair County, KY, on 19 May 1838. In 1840, the US Fed. Census for Green County, KY shows a Robert Cox as head of household with family members recorded as: 1 white male 20-30, 1 white female 15-20, 1 white male under 5 and 1 white female under 5 - I am pretty certain this is his family.
In 1850, the only close match I could find for the family as known was in Morgan County, IL. Family members were Robert, 35, Frances, 30, John, 11, Elizabeth, 9, Lavina (actual name was Melvina; ancestry.com transcribed & indexed it as "Janna"), 7, William, 6, Samuel, 2. There is a family listed right before them headed by a William Cox, 45, born in Virginia. The rest of his household is: William, 17, Samuel, 13, Franklin, 11, Nancy, 7. I have always wondered if they were related, especially since Robert later had a son whom he named Franklin (my great-grandfather).
In 1860, Robert's family is still in Morgan County. John and Elizabeth are gone from the household, and there are 2 unexplained boys living there, Charles and John, in between sons William and Samuel. The also have added a son, James. No sign of William's family.
In 1870, Robert's family has moved to Sangamon County.
It doesn't sound to me like there is any direct connection between my Cox family and yours without further information. There is one intriguing bit, though: I have Robert's son William (the 6 year old in the 1860 census, born in KY) as possibly being the same William V. Cox who married a Margaret Virginia Hohimer in 1874 in Sangamon County. They lived mostly in Sangamon County, but for the 1910 census were in Adams County. I'm trying to find the GEDCOM my distant cousin sent me to see if he is the source of this information. It certainly bears re-examination - I may have the wrong man attached to my William. Or - it could be a total coincidence. :o !
Good luck in your research - if you find anything that connects to my information, please let me know.
Good to hear from you! My Son in law is a Cox. He was born in St. Louis but his Dad was born in St. Joseph. His Grandma's family is from Trenton. That is as far as I can go. We don't know Grandpa's name.
Too bad you aren't related to others in my family. They are all from South MO.
I found information about the Cherokee blood from info on Smokykin website for Smokey Mountain Families. I have not been able to find any of my family on registers but there are from what I have been told some Tennessee Cherokee that were never logged on any of the rolls.
Debra, I have two Cox connections in NC. First in Randolph Co., I directly descend from Quaker Coxes from the Holly Spring meeting. My ancestor, Jane Cox Johnson (1824-bef 1910), was the daughter of Jonathan Cox and Sarah Wierman Cox. Jonathan (b1795) was the son of Nathan Cox and Catherine Moffitt. Sarah (b1796) was the daughter of Charles Cox and Amy Barker.
Second are from Mitchell, Yancey and originally Burke Co. A David Cox married a Nancy McNeill, a sister to my ancestor Hector McNeill. David Cox (1799-1854) may have been the son of David Cox and a Mary Bailey. I have no proof of this other than a will transcription for his mother, Mary. That Cox line may have come from Alamance Co., NC and previously in Pennsylvania.
Let me know if you see any matches or similar locations. Thanks.
