Thanks for the intro. Just getting my feet wet. We actually stopped and on our way home from UT on Monday night in Sacto and attend the temple on Tuesday. What a beautiful place. Though a bit different from Oakland procedures! Good to hear from you.
My mother's paternal side came almost certainly with the Huguenots to Uelsen, Germany. I've traced them back to 1660. And I suspect strongly my father's paternal side did as well, to Overijssel, where I've traced them to the early/mid 1700s.. I'm looking for means of finding evidence of the "French Connection" in the 1600s, so to speak, so anything I can learn here will be appreciated. My great uncle, who did do some genealogy work, was certain of the Huguenot background and the area of Lyon, France. But I find no documentation from him on this, and other work he did. So I'm writing my own 'book' on what he covered. Undocumented genealogies are not much more than stories, and his was well meant, but not well done before 1881. But both sides of my family are Calvinists from the beginning, giving annecdotal evidence of their origins. I'm an American who emigrated back to the Netherlands 20 years ago.
Primary names I'm researching: Duthler, Masseling/Masselink, Van der Scheer and Peters. Countries I'm researching: Netherlands, Germany, Canada, U.S. and Australia. Possibly France, if I can make the Huguenot connection.
BTW, the Family Search Record Search (the new one) is really neat.
Hi, Michael,
I too am researching the Quirk family. I am particularly trying to untangle the relationships of the family in the late 1800's and early 1900's, most of them in the Chicago area. My great grandmother was Emma Quirk, born in 1866 in Lockport, Illinois, to Mary (I believe) Stanners Quirk, and John Quirk. I am unable to find anything solid on either Mary or John. However, I know that Emma had a large family, and it appears they were fragmented after their mother's death, and Emma lived with various family members, often with her Aunt Mary and uncles James and Peter, all unmarried (although James may have been married at some time). The three single siblings lived together until their deaths and left their estate to the Catholic Church in Kewanee Illinois, where Visitation St. Mary's Church was built on their land, with money from their estate. Peter died first, while the family lived in Maryville, Missouri. He made a trip back to Ireland to visit family and died while there. Mary and James had their priest go to Ireland, to bring his body home. When the remaining siblings moved to Kewanee, they then brought Peter's body there. The siblings, and my great grandmother Emma, are all buried together in that cemetery. Emma had a large family, including sisters named Margaret (married to Tim Murphy) and Catherine (married to Joseph McGarry. I am searching for the rest of them - but they are difficult to locate in the census, as they were farmed out to various homes when their mother died, and they were all quite young. I am hoping that our Quirk families may be connected. Please let me know what you think! I can share more, if that helps. one item of interest is that Emma was hospitalized in Chicago for four years, around the turn of the century. She had a small daughter, my grandmother Pearl Catherine Menzer. While she was hospitalized, Emma's husband, William Menzer, deserted them. During this time, Pearl lived with relatives - a Mary Quirk's family, in Chicago. After some extensive work, I have discovered that this Mary Quirk was married to a Quirk, but her own maiden name was also Quirk. So it is complex, and confusing! Hope to hear from you. Sincerely, Gwen Gransberg
Hi Michael. You must have left the chatroom just before I got there. I have been having internet problems tonight. I really hope you can get to my chat about the Ephrata Cloisters on Sunday and please feel free to add or correct anything. My interest in them stems from Michael Wohlfarth (Brother Agonius) who was there. He was also one of the Hermits of the Cocalico. Do youknow anything about them?
Hi - Hopefully you can get to the chat tonight and fill in what I leave out. You obviously know more about the Cloisters than I do. But then the purpose of chats is to get others involved and into networking. I can't seem to locate my two books about Ephrata and most of this comes from the internet. I am just giving the basics.
The chat went OK - 5 or 6 people there. No one from the Anabaptist Group. I thought at least they would be interested. 10 pm MT time is midnight here. The chat started at 9 eastern and lasted for an hour. I didn't get the comment below
sorry Michael, my husbands Beswicks originated from Darwen Lancashire as far as we know.
