Hi Susan - Thanks for responding to my "Why I Can't Find My Ancestors" on the Forum. I think the same thing could be said for "James Byrne or Burns" as for your John Collins. My grgrandfather was James Byrne and served in the Civil War. There were 210 men by the name James Byrne or Burns in the Union Army.
James had a daughter Cecilia who was born in 1872 in Worchester MA who married a John Collins. One of yours perhaps. I see you also listed Driscoll. James had a son Thomas Burns who married an Ann Driscoll. Her father's name was Corneilius. All of these people lived in the Syracuse NY area. John and Cecelia and Thomas and Ann are buried in Cazenovia NY. Any of yours?
Thank you very much for posting the new info on the Titheapplotment pages for Aghadown. I too have beeen searching this sw Cork area- Roaringwaters Bay area. My names that I'm following are Regan, Driscoll, Minihane, Goslins from Sherkin Island, and Gosnells. I too understand your many frustrations in seaching this small area, and there is very little help from the Irish and Ireland. Please get in touch with me.
It has been awhile, but I've made a few discoveries here and there. Not much movement on my DNA efforts, however. I did discover this wonderful source called The Irish Records Extraction Database. At this site, you can find marriage dates and spouse names. It was great for me as I found the names of Webb, Fuller and Wolfe who married a Forbes from Cork-Ross about the same time as my GGG grandfather George married Sarah Haggartie. It seems most likely that these were brothers of George; the names Webb Fuller and Wolfe were all American emigrants about same time. Thought I would share. Hope all is well -- best wishes. Eric P.S. If you don't have access to this database, I could look up a few names for you.
Your diligence is fantastic! Will need to spend time on your site as you have links and information I haven't seen before. I have been to www.bandon-genealogy and the western cork genealogy site but not the others. The Haggarty, Hegarty, Haggertie spelling probably all represent the same family so I guess we are related in some way even though we also both have DNA markers not usually found in Ireland. My mother was descended from Burke, Duan, McCarthy so there are many McCarthy's in the history too. Yes, the site I mentioned is accessible via Ancestry; I guess I like its tidyness compared to other listings.
Your surname sweep project via the tithe applotment information for Cork seems both a promise and a challenge. I think your energy will be an inspiration to pick up the shards I've gathered and try to make some sense out of it. In trying to pick up more of the context, I found this book helpful: IRELAND AND IRISH IMMIGRATION TO THE NEW WORLD FROM 1815 TO THE FAMINE, by William Forbes Adams. Adams was a professor at UCLA. Don't know his connection (if any) to my family.
Will try to keep in more regular contact. Best wishes, Eric
