Some additional info Ann - there is a Catherine Cahalane listed as my gg-grandfather's baptismal sponsor, and possibly Mary Cahalane listed for the next boy Patrick. If the traditional Irish naming pattern was being followed then Bridget Cahalane's father may have been Patrick Cahalane.
There are several Cahalanes or similar spelling listed in the Kilmacabea tithe applotment from 1828. Denis and Cornelius Cohallane in Cloonkeen West; Thomas Cohallane in Knuckanega? ; James Cohollane in Maultrahane; Jeremiah Cahallane in Cashel ? ; and Thomas and Patrick Cohallane in Carrigariff? Have not had a chance to look at Kilfaughnabeg or others yet...
Good to know that Bridget Cahalane was "clean" before the wedding, LOL. :)
Please let me know if you think our Cahalanes could be related! I was recently contacted by a lady who apparently is related to a Michael Cahalane married to Honora Donovan and had a son Thomas 11-Feb-1868 in Cloonkeen. They also had a son John who was this lady's grandmother's uncle. Apparently Michael was called "Big Mike." We don't know if we have a relationship but the area is the same.
Ann, just wanted to check and make sure you and Kathy have the following death record: 9-Apr-1868, Cohelane, Michael, married, age 68, Knuckavohir, Mary Cohelane, wife present at death. I found this on FHL film #101618.
The Edward MacLysaght books link the name with Culhane. I am in the processing of publishing some tithe applotment transcriptions up on my own hosted space. I have Kilmacabea hand transcribed but it's a tough one because of the Donovans. Of the other transcriptions I've done so far I did find stray Cahalanes in Caheragh - Daniel & brothers, in Lognagappul.
You found a Cahalane marriage record for me last year and I have a question for you - in your Cahalane research have you seen a Margaret Cahalane who would have been old enough to be a baptismal sponsor in the 1840's. She turns up as a sponsor to children of Jeremiah O'Neil and Ellen Mahony in Abbeymahon & Donoghmore.
I don't think Margaret Cahalane has anything to do with me, I'm asking for somebody else and thought you'd be the person who would know.
I am also interested in the Kinirons. My 2nd great grandmothe was Margaret Mary Kinirons and she emigrated from Ireland to the US around 1851 or 1852. She was married to John Maher. Family lore says they were from Tipperary, but I have no proof. They had at least three children born in Ireland, John, Jeremiah, Stephen, Mary Ann may have been born on the ship coming to America. Elizabeth was born in the US.
Wow. I have been researching my family for about 25 years and this is the first time I have found a Kinirons or any information about the family in Ireland. Here is some of what I know.
John the father for whom you have no dates must have died before 1860. He is not listed in the census records for that year.
His son John died in the American Civil War on 20 Sep 1863 at the battle of Chickamauga. He is buried in the Chattanooga National Cemetery in Tennessee under the name John Means. I actually have a photograph of him.
Jeremiah died 20 March 1900. Wife's name was Mary and children were Annie, Alice, Celia, Robert, and Clifford. He was a pipe layer.
Stephen died 15 Apr 1918. He was a stone cutter.
Mary Ann was known as Shanny. They had two children, a female and John Ellis. (I have no dates for them yet, but will at some point work on this branch some more.)
Elizabeth married the son of Dutch/German immigrants by the name of Elfers (my mother's maiden name). They had 12 children, four of whom died in infancy. I knew all the rest of them.
I will put my e-mail address in two posts. I have already gotten one spam e-mail through this site and don't want more. As soon as I hear from you I will remove the post with my address.
The first part of my e-mail is bethcar@.
There are directories of people who lived in Cincinnati staring in 1819. The last one is from 1934. Early years are sporadic. You will find Margaret, Stephen, Jeremiah, and Elizabeth all there. I have not found Shanny--she lived in Kentucky, I think, but have not looked for her. http://virtuallibrary.cincinnatilibrary.org/VirtualLibrary/vl_CityD...
Wonderful to hear from you and get a location in Ireland for my relatives.
Good to hear from you, now I am glad I've recently started a Cahalane folder in my file drawer, it might come in handy.
Give me the date, all the names, and ship name of the Cahalanes who emigrated in 1910, I may be going to the Family History Library here in Los Angeles next Saturday, and if I do I can try poking around for Helena. Are they on ellisisland.org? I did a quick search there but did not immediately come up with the right people.
BTW, in case genealogywise.com ever decides to go away, please add my email to your address book: collinsgenealogy@sjbar.com.
I saw the following woman named Nellie Cahalane in Family Search:
Henry Michael Vonder Haar, Ohio Deaths, 16-Jan-1939, parents Frank N. Vonder Haar, Nellie Cahalane
"Part of the problem with Cahalanes is that there were a number of families where they lived in the same location but were cousins"
Yes, that is a problem with Cork genealogy in general. I have encountered this difficulty with McCarthys. :( It gets so bad that even the General Registry Office gets confused.
"The ships manifest shows their fathers as being different."
I am impressed the ships manifests have that much detail, but I guess later on the manifests were better.
"will have the rest of the Cork records up by the end of September we hear, including Kilmacabea, not that it will necessarily help"
A number of people on ancestry.com are impatiently waiting for the additional church records, but you are right, I am not holding my breath I will learn anything more about Bridget Cahalane or some other ancestors. Besides my published trees I took the Family Finder test at Family Tree DNA and have hung out my line, so to speak, and will just have to wait for more fish to bite.
