My name is Gale and I live in North Carolina. My maternal haplogroup is H10 (Finnish, Russian, German and English). I have always heard folklore of Native Heritage and my Mom was from Sampson County and many of the relatives intermarried with the African-American, European-American and Native American community. My results were Finnish, Russian and Yoruba. I read where you mentioned the Conrad and Mason surnames which my mtDNA connects with. My mother's ancestors were the German-speaking people, Quakers and Mennonites that left Pennsylvania and settled east of the Catawba River. I am related to the Lawsons of Winston-Salem, N.C. and the Wilsons of Mecklenburg County, NC. My grandmother was a Smith from Smiths, Robeson County, N.C. and Manuel and Brewington grandmfothers from Sampson County, N.C. Other surnames in my family are Jackson, Freeman, Williams. Jones, Walker, Scott, etc. I am indigeneous of the Saami (Suomi) people of Finland and Mongolian people of Russia. Do you have surnames connected with North Carolina?
Your excitement is very much needed in geneaology research and making family connections. My mtDNA matches connected me to the Conrads of Cabarrus County , west of the Catawba River in North Carolina. I came across this link during my researching and saw your photo about finding out your Native heritage. Yesterday I received e-mail from distant relatives in the Manuel and Lee Family Tree. Because my mom's Haplogroup is European, many of the distant relatives will not reply once they find out that african-american admixtures are distant relatives with their families. But, I have had more of a positive experience than a negative experience with responses. Honestly, some were not aware or thought the admixture was Native-American only. Others intermarried into European-American families and took on the identity and likewise with my family that intermarried with African-Americans and were assigned the identity. While, some of the multi-racial identified as Native American. I do know that their is Native American relatives in the family tree but I am in a European Haplogroup, not Native American. Although I have indigenous mtDNA from the Russian Mongolian and Scandinavian inidgenous people. I atested with Family TreeDNA, the Full Genome Sequence and my results are in the National Genographic DNA Project and the ones below: You may contact me at my email address: galerey@yahoo.com
As you know my haplogroup is H10e2, but if you look at my admixture I am using as my photo incon, you will clearly see that I do have American Indian and Artic Ancestry. My ancestors were Russian, Finnish and Yoruba. The Indigenous features were more of the indigenous people of Europe's Saami People, but as they moved about the Artic there were obvious admixtures and they finally married into the black community. I am so happy that I decided to take the dna test. I use my results to teach the Genetics unit in our Science book. I teach 7th grade Science. The children found it very interesting. How progressive ir involved are you within the Native American popuation? Stay in touch, Gale.
Happy Thanksgiving! Today, I discovered on gedmatch.com that we do share dna on the X chromosome! What was your mother name or some of her surnames. I really want to make a connection to my mother's relatives. I live in North Carolina. galerey@yahoo.com
