I am hoping to visit Kampen this month. My earliest ancestors left from that city in the 1600s and came to the New Amsterdam area. They settled in the Delaware Water Gap and moved into New York State in the following years. Gerrit Jansen (Van Campen) Might have been Gerrit, son of John from Campen. Is there a place to search for info in the area? Thank you.
My 9 greats grandfather Pieter Van Woggelum ( borb c. 1625) was one of the proprietors of Schenectady , ( then New Amsterdam ) New York in 1661. Also, he was a tavern keeper in Rensselear. Pieter was jailed for not paying the excise on the tavern. He had various surnames. Originally, his surname was Adrienson, as the name of his father was Adrien. Then, he acquired the name Van Woggelum. He originally came from the village of Woggelum, in the Province of Alkmar in the Netherlands, Finally, he acquired the name Soogemacylic, which,in Dutch, means so easy going.. There is a recent translation, done by the New Netherland Society, of a record of a court case datet September 11, 1683. Pieters wife Grietie Van Woggelum sued some women for perpetuating a rumor that she had been spending evenings with Andreas Bradt.
