    Hello,
My husband's father was born in Scotland, sent to sea at about 14 years old by his father who was a magistrate there....when he got out of the service he lived in Ontario, married Helen White (who's family was well placed in Canadian history & contacts). They had 3 boys, my husband was the middle son. Father retired and moved (alone) to Scotland first then on to England where he married another lady and died in 1968. Their family spelling is Wylie..do you think we are connected?

It is exciting to hear from you. I am glad your research is going well. I have had a similar situation where one generation will name a son or daughter the same as the father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, or even skip a generation or three and do the same. Sometimes the names will be switched around in census, marriage, or death records. It can get confusing. Hopefully finding the source for each record will at least lay to rest about one form of the formal name one way or another. And what about the ancestors who did not use any part of their formal given names, but used nicknames or shortened forms of their given names that don't make sense to us?
