Hi Carol, are there specific Vannoys that you are researching in Wilkes County? My ancestor, Elijah Vannoy, was in Wilkes County in the early 1800 before moving on to Tennessee.
Thanks for your reply Carol. Elijah Vannoy was born about 1784. The earliest record I have of Elijah Vannoy is an 1807 entry in the Wilkes County, North Carolina Deed Book G-H. He married Lois McNeil sometime before 1810 and he is listed in the Wilkes County, NC 1810 Federal Census. He left Wilkes County, NC after 1811 and an Elijah Vannoy is listed in the Bedford County, Tennessee 1812 Tax List. The next records I have of him are in Claiborne County, Tennessee beginning in the 1818 - 1819 Court Minutes. He is listed in various other Claiborne County records up to 1845. He is listed in the Hancock County, Tennessee 1850 Federal Census. I have found one source which lists his death date as 1852.
Is Vannoy your maiden name or your married name? Which of the brothers, in the late 1700s, in Wilkes County do you descend from (Andrew, Nathaniel, Daniel, Francis or other)?
Carol, I want to thank you for sending the link for the information on Elijah Vannoy, I really appreciate it!! The only problem is that they, like may Vannoy researchers, have given Elijah's father as Francis Vannoy. Many researchers have assumed that since Francis, and some of his descendants, migrated to an area in Kentucky which is just north of where Elijah migrated to in Claiborne and Hancock County TN, that Francis must be Elijah's father. The problem is that when you try to fit all the children that people have assigned to Francis, and compare it to 1787, 1790, 1800, 1810, etc. census records - they just won't all fit! I keep hoping that I will find someone who has found a Bible record, or something else, that will solve the problem!! Once again, thanks for your help!! Which Wilkes County ancestor do you descent from?
