Lyall Inkster (1915-1995) was from Grangemouth in Scotland, born to a Shetland family. In Grangemouth the family settled in Basin Street in Old Town. From whatever direction there were whiffs on the wind, from the oil refinery, the soap works, and the dying works. Lyall grew up wearing Shetland jumpers and a six foot long scarf made by his relatives back on Burra Isle. Being the youngest son Lyall was doted on by his mother, Helen, and his older sister Kate. They adored him and fussed over him, even to the extent of not letting him tie his own shoe laces. Lyall excelled in athletics, winning high jump medals and breaking the Scottish YMCA high jump record at 5ft 3 and a half.
