Looking for Marilyn Austin Smith and/or Celia Smith

I am looking for Marilyn Austin Smith and/or Celia Smith who compiled and researched a booklet (self published, I believe) in 1994 called: "Mary Gardner and Her Family". It included history and geneology of Gardner, Sweeten, Luckham, etc. I wish to know who hired them to do the research. They could possibly be from Salt Lake City, Utah.

Tips to Becoming a More Productive Genealogist

1.Determine Your Genealogy Goals- without a goal and a path you will wander aimlessly, accomplishing very little. Setting goals and creating an action plan for a achieving your goals are imperative to staying the course. Don’t hesitate to revisit these goals throughout the year.

2.Create a Daily, Weekly and Monthly Routine- set time aside each week to work on your genealogy project.

3.Create a Schedule or To-Do-List – break down your goals into actions, schedule your… Continue

Preserving Your Family History- The Best Options

Many family historians spend their entire lives collecting documents, pictures and stories of their ancestors. Their project usually starts out as a keen interest in whom they are and where they come from. The journey becomes not only about acquiring the proof of their ancestors existence but it also becomes a journey of personal self-discovery. For this, the proof that exists in the documents, photos and stories that they acquire become very valuable to them. Here lies the problem. This… Continue

Have a cow? Win a wife!

This is a cute story from my family tree…

“William Cogswell, when a lad, was out from home by the highway, where some men were trying in vain to relieve a cow who had become choked with a potato. There stood by, also, a young girl, eight or ten years old, who watched with interest every effort made. When all experiments failed, and it was suggested that only by someone thrusting his hand down the cow's throat would the cow be saved, she at once said, "My arm is small; I can do it… Continue

More thoughts on privacy and genealogy files

A news report today about changes in the "privacy settings" on Facebook got me thinking about genealogy files again. Facebook is the antipode of privacy. Just this morning, in looking at my Facebook News Feed, I see notes about people going back to work, a wedding announcement (yes, a real wedding announcement with a request to RSVP) report of a trip to Hawaii, new clothes for baby, and a whole lot of posts about how people are feeling today. I won't even go into the content on my Twitter… Continue

Anna Blenkiron Donated Tot Lot - Pekin, IL

There is a little corner park, called a tot lot, on the corner of 601 Park Avenue in Pekin, Tazewell County, Illinois. It is the only park on Park Avenue, which probably received its name because it terminates at the much larger Mineral Springs Park.

Blenkiron Park is a tiny little quarter of an acre, part of the fifth largest park district in the state of Illinois. It became a park around 1945 when it was donated to the city by Anna Blenkiron.

Copy large genealogy documents at very high resolution

OK folks, this gets pretty technical, but by using this method, you can digitize large documents with very high resolution. The Diploma above has some very small printed detail and is 16 x 21 inches. If you click on either image you can get an idea of the quality of the image, although you cannot see all of the detail available without zooming in. The first image is edited in Adobe Photoshop to correct the color. The second image is the… Continue

Happy New Year! - Double Dating Explained

No, not the double dating you did in high school when you didn’t have a date for the dance, this is the double dating that shows up in history books and genealogies. If you use a good genealogy data base like Family Tree Maker, your software may actually change or challenge any dates you put in pre- 1752 between January and March 24. Or you may have tried to figure out how to calculate a date during this time period, only to notice that you were off by three months somehow when you finally find… Continue
