In the 19th. century constables for the European contingent of the Hong Kong Police were recruited from the UK. Most came from London's Metropolitan Police, Scottish Constabularies or the Royal Irish Constabulary but in 1882 the south-west of England was targetted with the result that 13 officers were recruited from Bristol.
