I thought I'd post my brick wall on here and maybe somebody can help me with it. My brick wall is W.H. GARDNER. We believe the W.H. stand for WILLIAM HENRY. We have him enlisting in the 1st Iowa Cavalry on 29 Dec 1863 in Warren County, Iowa. It states that he is 20 years old and a native of Michigan. I cannot find him on any censuses. I do not know who his parents are. I have sent away for his military records and they sent me the wrong William Gardner twice. I have a picture of him and his wife. I do not know his wifes name or when they were married. I'm assuming they were married somewhere in Iowa. He had two children, Charles who was born in 1869 and Olive who was born in 1871, both were born in Iowa.
I have not been able to find a William with a son Charles in the 1870 census in Iowa.
In 1873 the family headed south. The story goes that the wife got sick so they stopped in Johnson County, Arkansas where she died in May of 1873. Sometime later that year William went off to work at a sawmill and was killed. The children were orphaned and Charles was pushed from one home to another working farms while Olive was taken in by the family that they were staying with at the time.
There is supposed to be a coroners inquiry into William's death, but I haven't been able to locate it.
If anybody has any ideas or questions I'm more then willing to listen.
