Does someone know of an ONLINE version of Svensk Ortförteckning (any edition)? Perhaps one of the Swedish genealogical groups....

This book is indespensible in identifying Swedish place names. My local Family History Center has(had) a copy but they are now closed for extensive remodeling. They say open again in Fall of 2009 but I know how construction projects usually go - slow.

Leif,
An online list: http://www.skatteverket.se/privat/folkbokforing/folkbokforingenshis...
It's only in Swedish but not so difficult to understand anyway. The parishes are listed in the districts they belong to today.

To search for the names, use the search in the webb browser.

Thanks for the tip, Annelie.

Yes, it shows modern subdivisions. It is useful because it shows which parishes got assigned to each kommun.

I found my family parish, Kvistbro, but the search database does not seem to go to smaller places. I tried Baggetorp, a farm area within Kvistbro parish but it found nothing. The list appears to be a tax list associated with church tax and so it does go down to parish level (församling abbreviated förs). This would be a help locating a parish within a kommun (kind of like a township in many US states).
Yes, the list is only for parishes. To find about farms and other places we have a CD. It can be bought from the Swedish Genealogy Federation http://www.genealogi.se/roots/. It's probably just in Swedish.

Description: Swedish geographical database, more than 410.000 items, extremely useful even if you only have minor knowledge of a place, described in some very old act. All names are linked to a province, municipality or parish as of 1999. Published in 2002.

Myself have lists about the farms in the Falköping area on my website www.emigrant.se. Not all parishes done but most are there.

So maybe it's a good idea to contact the local Gen Society the parish belong to and find out if they have any information about the place you are looking for. Other Societies to look for is the Countrysides Soc. Many I know about have documents about the places in their parishes. For ex Gökhem, the parish in Falköping, Skaraborg I grow up in, done a inventory of cottages and places which no longer excist. A post are at the site. A book and a map was made which was for sale (out of sale).

For researchers in the USA, a specialty retailer Map Genie sells Swedish maps in the US and often ship from stock.

They list -Motormännens Vägatlas över Sveriga- an autoclub map book at scale 1:250,000. This is a useful scale. This map book covers all of Sweden (scale is 1:400,000 in the lightly populated north). Price seems to be $40 USD. It is very similar to my M-KAK bil atlas which I use all the time. I bought it in Sweden.

I have not purchased from them but know people who have and they speak well of them. Map Genie is also the US distributor for the Swedish government topo maps (GREEN MAPS) which are scale 1:50,000 which shows farm houses. They are said to be very helpful in helping you find the right quadrangle (out of nearly 700 for the country). You can see small pieces of these maps on line but it takes some work in Swedish. Published by Lantmäteriet (sort of like USGS)
Ask if you need help.
On Lantmäteriet there is a service to see historical maps over Sweden.
