Hi GeneJ:

I am a decendant of Jonas & Rosana Steed. My great grandfather was Benjamin F. Steed, their son. His daughter Opal did not want to share information about her Cherokee heritage. We were not allowed to ask questions about her indian ancestry. I was too young to ask my great grandfather the right questions, when he was around. I have a tree in Ancestry.com but it is not public because I still have so many questions. I'm attaching an overview, which I think you already have because you seem to have same documents that I came up with.

I know Rosana's father was from PA, she was born in Ohio. Her mothe was also born in Ohio. I was told that Some of the Steed Family lived in Washington County Ohio. Jonas had a brother named Thomas who lived there. It's possible his father is also named Thomas. However, my interest for many years has been the puzzle of Rosana and family.

Your assistance is appreciated.

Sincerely,

Audrey Bordvick

The marriage info for Rosana 1892 was on Ancestry's 1900 Census data. It automatically uploaded and is incorrect, I have removed the event.
Hi GeneJ:

Thank you for all of your research. I looked at the Death Certificate for Rosana and have uploaded an attachment. It looks like my Rosana but still no confirmation on being a Starr. Years back someone sent me information on the Ancestry bulletin board that Rosana was a Starr born in Ohio and that her father was Richard Starr born in PA. Unfortunately, they did not give me their source and never responded to my request for backup.

I'm hoping that my Steed family group sheet uploads as you requested a traditional format. I work off of a mac and have found that most software is made for a regular PC.

Until next time.

This is great! I never saw Ben's birthdate listed. I have attached a photo of Great Grandfather Benjamin Steed and my Great Grandmother Claudia Evelyn Winland Steed.

Yes, If I remember correctly. He would have been about 93 years old he died. He was an oil cat (rig builder) in Texas, helped build Hoover Dam and was in the Spanish American War. One tough guy, couldn't handle his whiskey.

His wife Claudia was pretty tough too! She was one of the first woman rodeo riders in the west (California).

I'm so confused..... Rose, Rosana, Stead, Steed brn. Ohio, Kentucky or Indiana. Jonas? or Joseph? Steed
Joseph is a new one for me.
Yes, I have thought of this. My father's dna results are uploaded on genebase. I just haven't gotten any good matches.
Thank you so much. So close!
Hi GeneJ:

I just received Rosana Steed's grave location from Susie of Oak Grove Cemetery, Washington Co., Ohio. Rosana is located in Lot #135, Section 14. Perhaps posting this will help me find a volunteer to take a photo of her grave stone. Thanks again for all of your help. Audrey

Hi GJ:

I have seen the above mentioned documents about Benjamin and Jonas. I knew about Benjamin's eye, he was completely blind by the time that I knew him. He had trained his pet monkey (Pepe-a squirrel monkey) to pour his whiskey for him and retrieve a peanut as a treat after each serving. He was living in Oregon at the time. I know for a fact that the family also lived in Kansas, where my father was born.

I still can't wait until Friday to see if I get my Great Grandmother Rosana Steed has some clues about her side of the family on her gravestone or cemetary records.

The big puzzle seems to be birthdates, spelling of names and place of birth. I guess whom ever wrote the information in the census just went with what the name would sound like. However, that doesn't explain being born in several different states.

I am attaching an e-mail with all of the information I have about Thomas, Jonas' brother. Direct from a family member of Thomas. Also, attached 1850 Census of Abraham Steed and family.
