Hi - I have just joined, I am researching Heywood, Powell, Cripps, Fulton, Holmes, Vernon and Hollow. I have been researching on and off for about 10 years, with two young children now I don't get to do as much as I'd like.
Hi, I'm Pete Lovett, from Melb, Vic, Aus. Joined this site a short time ago.....been researching for about 20 years on and off. Names I'm looking at include Lovett, Colbert, Shanahan, McCormack, O'Reilly, and Timpson. Mostly good Irish stock!! :-)) If I can be of assistance to anyone in cemetery look-ups, headstone photos etc, don't hesitate to ask......cheers
is there anyone who visits the Mitchell library? I am looking for a couple of records from the Sydney Benevolent Asylum. I have the idex with these entries but need the full records if possible. Is anyone able to assist.
Thanks
A big welcome to Lisa and Peter

I'm thrilled to have been approached by FootnoteMaven the editor of a US online genealogy magazine, Shades of the Departed, to have one of my blog posts included in the latest issue.
Take a look at the January Issue and, if you feel like some Aussie content go to page 68.
It would be wonderful if we could get more Aussie content into this publication.
Great News Geniaus, you have put a lot of hard work into things so good on you ,lets see how far you can go ,you never know you could go higher ,congratulation,Bertjl.

Am looking for Don and Sorrell Cem's in Tassie, had a look at Gould Genealogy and they didn't have one Tassie Cemetery CD listed. Don't tell me the only available record of burials in Tas is TAMIOT????? That'd be - I don't know what to say. Anyone clear this up for me?????
I am looking for someone who can talk at our local genealogical meeting on DNA in plain English, if this is possible. Can anyone point me in a direction, (central Victoria area) a quick trip from Melbourne!
Thanks Shauna, I was on the train the other night talking about this to a colleague and someone over heard me and handed me a card for a fellow in Ballarat. I will keep you in mind if this one does not work out.
Are you on Facebook? If you are consider becoming a fan of SAG (The Society of Australian Genealogists) Just go to their page at http://www.facebook.com/SocAustGen?ref=nf and sign up.
Hi Shauna. My G grandmotherdied in Parkside Mental hospital in Adelaide in 1839. Do you know of anyway I could get her records. I believe she was taken there because she couldn't cope when her husband left leaving her with 9 young children and put in there. heather Laverty
Heather, there is possibly police records as well, may be worth looking in Police Gazettes to see if there was a warrant out for the husband for desertion.
Police Gazettes in South Australia don't start until the early 1860s (issue 41 was 3 January 1862, mostly weekly issues). On the other hand Government Gazettes in SA started 1839 and, until the Police Gazettes started, they carried the police and similar notices - it may be worth trying to check them out.
Hi Shauna Thank you for your reply. I am not sure when my G GreatGrandFather Walter Pankhurst left. I believe he walked out after an argument with his wife and never returned . The youngest was only a baby . I am not sure when he left as so far I havben't been able to find any birth details for him but the next youngest was born inn 1893, The theory is that he just left and went somewhere else or that he fell down a disused mine shaft at Moonta . . Any idea how I would go about getting into the police records, Poor old Selina spent a lot of time in the mental hospital because if George was a baby II say going by the ages of the other he would have been born around 1896 and she died in 1939, After she was taken away the kids were all split up some Fostered oud other put in orphanges etc. I believe jy Grandfather was put in some boys home. It is very sad really as the kids never got to know each other and when I was able to track a coupkle of their family down they did not know that their Grandfather came from such a large family. My Grandfather died when he was only 27. My dad the oldest was only 5 year old and dthe youngest 4 weeks .. Once again thank you for your repliy and thank you for yours to Rosemary. I hope to visit SA in April and see where the ancestorws came from and it would be nice to know a bit more about them. I am only new to this family tree buisness only started last year and have had a lot of help from Genalogy wise. Bye for now. Heather Laverty
Hi Carmel Thank you for your reply any idea how I would get into the policee records .I an sorry but I sent the last message to Shaun which should have been to you. I would like to thank you all for your help bye Heather
Digistised copies of most of the Police Gazettes for SA are available through Archive Digital Books Australasia and on World Vital Records Australasia (free 5 day trial). I see that Walter Pankhurst is mentioned twice in the 1895 Police Gazette (for deserting his wife and six children), there is reference to a Mary Pankhurst in 1894, a George in 1924 and 1929 plus a number of others in 1928, 1934, 1938 and 1947.
Hi Rosemary . Thank you very much for your reply it sounds so interesting could you please tell ne how I could into Archive digital book Australia and also the other. Would I be able to get into them by visiting the Queensland State Library as I live in Brisbane, I wasn't sure when WAlter left but thought it would be close to that time
His mother was Mary and George was his youngest son his other Children were Alrfed Albert Walter Selina William Joseph my Grandfather Thomas and another girl I Cant think of her name at the moment. It would be so interesting to find out what they had to say about them. I still have 2 Aunties alive who are 94 and 91 and the 91 is very interested in the family history so it would be nice to find out more. Once again thank you . The Pankhurt Family is a real mystery it seems as if my gG Grabdparents Joseph and Mary only registered one of their children so cant find out where Walter was born because SA never put that on their marriage records in those days. and I would not know where to get a death certificate for him
Hi Heather. Not sure if you are a member of the Queensland FHS (in Brisbane) but they have a full set of the Police Gazettes that have been digitised by Archive Digital Books Australasia - also free access to all the World Vital Records collection. Anyhow investigate first on the WVR link Shauna has given you - and do make sure you have plenty of time - there are lots of records to check out.
Hi Rosemary and Shauna thabk you for your replies about the SA police Gazette. I am not a member of the QLD FHS but looked it up on the net yesterday and found out about it and will look into joining it although don't relishthe thoughts of going to the city much prefer the suburbs. Do you have to be a paying member to access the world vital records Australasia. once again thank you both
Heather
Hi Heather. Queensland FHS is in the suburbs (at Gaythorne) - plenty of parking. You don't have to be a member to use the facilities but non-members pay a daily fee to use the library resources. You can always try the free trial first anyhow for World Vital Records.
Hi Rosemary Thank you for your reply my husband must have looked up the wrong addressHe said itt wsas in Edward Srtreet in the city
I can't wait to see what it says what it says about all of the Pankhurst especially Walter. I get so angry with Walter when I think about how he deserted his wife and kids it really stuffed up their lives. I would love to give him a piece of my mind lol... bye . Heather
Heather just reading your posts here and the Pankhurst page and wondered if you had been here: http://www.familyhistorysa.info/births-marriages-deaths/cemeteries/
you will find most of the one you have mentioned plus if you shorten the url and delete cemeteries and press enter it will come up with all the sites listings I found Joseph and Mary's marriage in there.
Also go here: http://www.gencircles.com
Type in joseph pankhurst - scroll to next page - click Cheek family - then at the top click p in the surnames - you will find 2 pankhurst listed there may be of help
Wayne
Hi Wayne. Just received your message. Thank you very much, I will try doing what you suggeted. I have found Mary and Josephs marriage by going to the the State library in Brisbane. Before that I had no idea where they were married or anything but thanks to the information that the SA government put on their certificates in those days still none the wiser who his parents were even his death certificate which came from Victoria disn't list that. but thatn did state he came from Hastings Sussex England. Once again than you will definitely be given those sites ago as I hope to visit SA in April and visit th york Penisular where most of the ancestors came from and it would be interestering to find out as much as possible before then. Heather
Hi Wayne Thank you for yor reply. I must be going blind but please tell me where my help/look up is LOL, I don't know too much about this genealogy stuff and not much about computers.. This really is a wonderful site I have received so mucch help in doing the family tree, there is so much i wouldn't have found out otherwise. I will have to start working on Dad's mothers side as well the StClair and Barty hopefully they will be easier then the darn Pankhurst. At least I have been able to find out where in SA my GGrandmother Maria StClair nee Barty was born unlike my GGrandfather Walter Pankhurst. .I seems to me Joseph and Mary Pankhurst never registered their children only 1 of them and yet I have found marriage records for about 6 of them . Walters marriage certificate never sais where he was born. Bye for now.
Heather
Hi, I discovered the Genealogywise.com site only the other day, and now your site, thank you for the invitation. I am researching my family and was born in England, migrated here in 1966 (10 pound POM) with my just then hubby as a 19 year old, but flew out rather than by ship. Fortunately I have remembered a fair bit of our family though maternal grandma's name eluded me. I found it 3 weeks ago - hurrah!
I will look around the site a bit more..... thanks
Angela Johnson (nee Dunford)
Reminder - If you need to order some certificates from the GRO (England) do so soon. They are presently 7 pounds but From Tuesday 6 April 2010 the price will rise to 9 pounds 25.

Hi,another Aussie with English roots....Sherratt is my maiden name.Having a hard time getting the line moving at this stage. Not enough family details to help me.All I have is my paternal Gparents marriage cert but details seem to conflict with known facts. Awaiting GF's birth cert and perhaps this will help.
I've been researching my Family Tree for the past 7 or 8 years - mainly the Scottish Ancestry but was amazed to find that we weren't the first family members to come to Australia. My Great great great Grandmother was transported to Van Dieman's Land in 1848 (no one in the family knew about that!!!) and her second eldest son (my great great Grandfather's brother) arrived here as a free settler in 1850. If you have a connection to Uruqharts in Victoria/NSW you may connected to his line. I am also searching for Lauries/Lawries probably also in Victoria - descendants of Peter Lawrie of Chirnside, Berwick, Scotland (died Port Fairy 1890)
Hello Rosemary, I have Urquhardt's in my tree. John Urquhardt born 1835 Gairloch Scotland died 1921 Williamstown Victoria, he was married to Martha McGregor or Macgregor born Gairloch 1833 died 1920 Williamstown Victoria. I am related through his son Donald Kenneth Urquhardt born 1876 New Zealand Aukland, He married Sarah Jane Olive Wilson. Is this line in with your tree.????
Denise
Possibly not a connection Denise. My earliest Urquharts were all from Edinburgh, however, they may well have been from the highlands prior to the mid-late 1700s which is as far back as I've got so far. So far all my NZ branches have sprouted from the Lawrie line. However, you never know when a connection is just going to click into place!
