Hi Kim, Just post your request in the Help/Look up page at the top.

Whilst there give as much info as you possibly can names - dates (BDMs) - places - ships etc; anything that someone can use to help find who you are looking for and when you get an answer then you can pursue it more, as most usually give where to look.

Plus also place an enquiry into the Germany group as well.

  • Anne Nolan

    Hi all,

My name is Anne I'm new to the list and I'm in Victoria.  I've been researching my family history for over 30 years now off and on.  Some of the surmanes I'm interested in are Richards - Cornwall, Calderwood - Scotland, Harvie - Scoland, Young - Scotland all came to Aus. Nolan - England, Wales, Ireland, Collins - England, Ireland, Mitchell - England, Ireland, White - England, Ireland.

Looking forward to being part of the group.

  • Anne Nolan

    Hi Maree,

Haven't track the Whites any further than England I'm afraid.  This is my husbands line with a Margaret White marrying a Timothy Nolan.

    Sorry I can't help you.

    Anne.

  • Linda Ottery

    Hi Anne,

I have Richards from Cornwall, who settled in the Bendigo / Castlemaine (being miners!) area of Victoria. This is my husband's line and don't have a lot of info yet - or the time to do the research needed. There is a Cornish Society in both Bendigo and Melbourne who can be quite helpful. I have lots of photo's but only of few names to go with them

    Cheers from Linda

  • Anne Nolan

    Hi Linda,

My Richards that came out to Aus are Thomas b 1818 in Wendron m Johanna Bosanko b 1821 Sithney m in Sithney.  Simon Richards b1827 Wendron m Catherine Hocking in S Aus.  Martha Richards b abt 1815 m Thomas Gill in Sithney.  I have quite a lot on this family, Martha and Simon are siblings of Thomas who is my gggrandfather.  They all lived around the Bendigo, Castlemaine area.  Thomas and Johanna arrived in 1847 in Adelaide with 1 child, Simon arrived later also in Adelaide and I think that Martha and Thomas Gill arrived in Melbourne.  Hope this is of help, please let me know if they're in you husbands tree.

    Regards Anne.

  • Anne Young

Hi - I have just joined genealogywise.com and am an Australian genealogist from Ballarat, Victoria.  I am a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) and the Australasian Association of Genealogists and Record Agents (AAGRA)

  • Lyn Whelan

Even though I'm in New Zealand, I'd like to think I can share with, or benefit from the knowledge other people with special interests have. I have been prompted to join groups that interest me as a result of assignments I have been carrying out on Social Networking for the wise genealogist. Some of your names are very familiar. I operate my own research business from Auckland.

  • Carmel M Reynen

Hello Anne, I am also in Ballarat Area and currently the editor of 'Ballarat Link' the newsletter for the Ballarat and District Genealogical Society. and Lyn I am visiting New Zealand in October, so looking forward to it.

  • Anne Young

Hi Carmel - I am a member of the Ballarat and District Genealogical Society and enjoy the newsletter

    Regards

    Anne

  • Co Ordinator

Hello Carmel and Anne - as you know I am part of the Batten Family that set up the Mechanic's Institute. Well on a recent trip to Vic I made an appointment with the staff at the Institute Library to call in and see for ourselves what it was all about. The staff were very helpful in every way possible took us on a tour of the building and allowed us to take as many photo's as we could possibly get, which was very rewarding to say the least, then low and behold another historian turned up and we were introduced to him who we were, then said come with me and out of the blue he showed us old photo albums and photos that were donated after the Batten residence at 8 DANA St was auctioned off and what a bonus that was, my poor wife was nearly in tears as she remember the uncles and aunties and her father in all the photos and one special one with her as well.

We topped that day off by going to see the grave site of all the family very sad though as most of the wording etc had fallen off over the years.

The Cemetery itself is very old and it's a pity that the grave sites of others are deteriorating rapidly. This brings me to say that there could and should be committees through out Australia not just Ballarat that are funded by Government grants so that historical cemeteries such as these could be maintained and preserved and not left up to councils' that clearly donot have budgets to cater for their cemeteries in this manner.

Other than that our visit to Ballarat for this out standing information was very rewarding.

    Wayne

  • Carmel M Reynen

    Hi Wayne

There are battles going on at the moment re the Ballarat Cemetery. They were about to destroy 3 graves and luckily through some thorough research the Society had a hand in saving these when one of our members joined a committee at the cemetery. However there are many graves marked as dangerous and possible removal.

The Ballarat and District Genealogical Society does have a fund starting for this purpose. We do have plans to go in and photograph each grave and headstone, but the weather has not been kind to us of late but the plans are in place to do this.

  • Co Ordinator

Well done Carmel and The Society for standing up about this maybe if more people were informed of this the greater it would be as I for one, am a believe in people power. Just as well I am not living there as I would love to stand on toes so that they can notice what is going on around them, but it would be a massive task to find if there are living families that have their family buried there.

Yes when I visited there, there were head stones ready to fall, one had a protective fence around it so that visitors could keep away from it, that was down near the Rotunda if I recall.

Once again keep up the good volunteer work.

    Wayne

  • Carmel M Reynen

the one with the fence is one that is going to be saved! We published a letter on the net and advertised it on twitter, 14000 hits in a few days

Hi, I am new to GenealogyWise, and have just joined this group. I live in Adelaide and will be elected a Councillor at the imminent AGM of Genealogy SA. Almost finished the NIGS Certificate Course (English records) and am doing the Australian subjects as they are ready. I have been researching for 40+ years, but there is still lots to learn.  Jan

  • Helen Thompson

Hi, I am new to GenealogyWise, and have just joined this group.

I am enrolled in the Social Media Tools for the Wise Genealogist course (National Institute for Genealogical Studies), which I won as  prize at the Annual Conference of the NSW & ACT Association of Family History Societies held at Canberra in September last year. I am finding the course very interesting.

I completed a Graduate Diploma in Local, Family & Applied History through UNE in 2012, which I also found very interesting.

I live at Dubbo, NSW, and have been researching my family history for many years (and have two 2nd Fleet convicts as my earliest Australian ancestors).  I am also interested in the local history of Dubbo.

I am researching the 1915 Gilgandra-Sydney "Coo-ee" Recruitment March (included the names of the men who joined as recruits from the many towns and villages along the way, and the march itself).  I am also involved in the committee organising a 2015 re-enactment of this march.  I will be visiting the graves of those "Coo-ees" who died during WWI in England, France and Belgium in August/September 2014, so if anyone ha a "Coo-ee" in their tree I would be happy to email you a photo of their grave later on in the year.  If anyone knows of anyone else who has has a photograph of their "Coo-ee" relative (especially in their WWI uniform),  I would very much like to hear from them.

  • Co Ordinator

Wow been a while since I was last on here.

Welcome Helen to this Forum hopefully you will find some answers that you need, like you I too have researched the 1st n 2nd fleet and found ancestors from my sister's husband's side very interesting reading. We really donot know what hard times hungry is in this day and age.

Dubbo brings back a memory or two for me when I was enlisted, I was part of the first armoured regimental train that stayed over night there and was a bad boy as I took a tank off the train and drove it down the main street, I can assure you all hell broke loose over that episode.ahh the good times!!

    Wayne

  • Helen Thompson

    Hi Wayne

Thank you for your welcome to this group.

Your trip to Dubbo sounds like it would have been very newsworthy - the Dubbo Liberal has recently been extended to up to 1954 on Trove http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-title188 - you might find an article about your adventures!  If it was after this date, if you can give me an approximate month and year that you were there, I can look for an article about it in later issues of the newspaper in my local public library.
