  • Michael Alan Lewis

I'm researching the origins and descendants of Edmond Lewes, who came to Watertown, Massachusetts from Ipswich, Suffolk, England in 1634 on the ship Elizabeth, with his wife Mary and sons John and Thomas. I am descended from his son Thomas, through New Jersey and Ohio Lewis families.
  • Michael Alan Lewis

    Hello Deb Reese:

Where did your Lewis ancestors live?

  • Michael Alan Lewis

    Hello Deb:

One must be very careful about finding people with the name of one of one's ancestors and assuming they are the same person. Information on web sites such as Ancestry and FamilySearch is often not well researched and verified through documentation.  I've been researching Edmond Lewes of Lynn, Massachusetts for over ten years.

Edmond Lewes is my 11th Great Grandfather. He and his family came to Watertown, Massachusetts, in 1634, on the ship Elizabeth, out of Ipswich, Suffolk, England. He lived in Watertown until 1639, then moved to Lynn, where he had a farm at Woods End, near the border of what is now Swampscott.

This Edmond Lewes is not the ancestor of the Warner Hall Lewises, nor did he come from Wales. He parents are unknown, but I have traced all Lewis/Lewes families in Suffolk, England and I am certain that Edmond Lewes was from a Lewes family of Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk that descend from Ludovick John or Lewis ap John of London in the 15th Century. Ludovick John's descendants were initially recorded as FitzLewes, meaning son of Lewes, which became Lewes in Suffolk.

Edmond Lewes's eldest son John was baptized in St. Mary le Tower Church in Ipswich July 18, 1630. Edmond was granted Freeman status in Ipswich in 1632.

There is no evidence that Edmond Lewes of Lynn, Massachusetts was born in Wales. This comes from the book, Lewis Families of Wales and America, 1928, by Edward Simmons Lewis, in which the author speculated that Edmond Lewes of Lynn was the same person as Edmond Lewis of Llystalybont, Glamorgan, Wales in the absence of any evidence to support the claim.

Edmond Lewes died in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1651 and his wife Mary died there in 1658. There burial places are unknown. Edmond's son John stayed in Lynn and inherited the farm at Woods End. I am descended from Edmond's second son Thomas, who moved to the Bristol Rhode Island area. My descent is through the Lewis families of New Jersey, Ohio, Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska.

Edmond/Edmund was a popular name in the 17th Century and there are many Edmond/Edmund Lewes/Lewis names in the genealogical literature. It is critical to follow one's ancestry through documentation in order to sort them all out.

  • Michael Alan Lewis

    Hi Deb:

As you'll notice I responded to your posts about Edmond Lewes below. Much of what you wrote is confirmed in my research, except the Welsh origin and connection with the Warner Hall Lewis's. The Lewis line descending from Edmond Lewes of Lynn, Massachusetts is completely different from the line that led to the Warner Hall Lewis line.

  • Rosemary Taylor

    Hello Michael,

Besides having Lewis in Virginia, I have a direct line to Thomas Lodowyck Lewis /Lewes born about 1628, unknown place.  He married Geesje Barents abt 1661 in Albany, New York.  He was a mariner from around New Amsterdam.  I have been wondering if he was a son of Edmond Lewes.  I descend from Thomas' daughter, Catherina, who married Laurens / Lawrence Thomaszen Popinga (Parrot in Dutch).  I have information on related people.  Descendants of Thomas Lewis in my line migrated to New Jersey, and very many years later they were in Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas.  I have thought Thomas Lewis was a dissenter in his religious views, but his wife and family were members of the Reformed Dutch Church.  One of his children married in the French Church.  I do not believe he was Welsh.  I do not believe he was Irish, as I have seen mentioned.  Thomas' son, also named Thomas was also a mariner.  He signed on with the privateer / pirate Tew.

  • Nancy Wallace

I have just scratched the surface of my Lewis line:

    John LEWIS (b. c1755 - d. 1822) m. Elizabeth (unk) (b. c1757 - d. 1872). As of 1820 they were in Mill Creek, Hamilton, Ohio.

    Children:

    1. Elizabeth LEWIS (b. c1790 Ireland - d. aft.1860) m. Anthony HERRINGTON (b. c1797 - d. 1831).  They are my g-g-g-grandparents  They lived in Mill Creek, Hamilton, Ohio.  Elizabeth moved to Belle Prairie, Livingston, Illinois sometime after 1850 and lived with her son Robert B. HARRINGTON.

    2. Robert LEWIS

    3. John LEWIS

    4.Mary LEWIS ( -1854) m. Daniel TITUS

    5.Louise/Lewis LEWIS

As you can tell, I have a lot to learn about them.

  • Damita Parrish

Hello all does anyone know how Henry Lewis (my 4th gGrandfather) b. 1724 VA  md. Anne Buford and this line of Lewis' are connected to the Warner Hall Lewis'? someone had sent me something on email stating this but I'm just starting my research so I'm seeking any help of my Lewis line and family history. I'm looking forward to connecting and meeting more of my family on here.

  • Rosemary Taylor

    Hello Damita.

I am not sure the Henry Lewis line does connect to the Warner-Lewis line.

I have Henry Lewis Sr., (abt 1700 -1785, married Martha Kendall, and lived in Spotsylvania County, Virginia as parents of Henry Lewis, who married Ann Buford. Documents in Spotsylvania County indicate there was a Henry Lewis Sr..

Other researchers say Henry Sr. was born 1699, Christ Church, Middlesex, Virginia, but I have not seen that document.  There is a claim that Henry's father was Henry Lewis, b. 1668, Lancaster County, Virginia.  I have seen no documents supporting this claim.

  • Damita Parrish

    Hi, Rosemary

Thank you for responding, it makes all the difference with documents I have documents that support my line up until my 4th gGrandfather Henry b. 1724 who md. Anne Buford. And there are so many Henry's, Williams, etc. I don't want to cross any information :-). Would love if you could share some history of our family. Again Thank You for your time.

  • Michael Alan Lewis

Is there something you wanted to point out on the Lewis DNA chart, Rosemary?

  • Rosemary Taylor

I wanted to make everyone aware there is a Lewis DNA chart.  Maybe more Lewis will do a DNA test.

It looks like one of my Lewis is from Wales as my research shows.  I'm not sure Thomas Lodowyc Lewis from early New York has descendants represented in the test.

  • Rosemary Taylor

I wanted to make everyone aware there is a Lewis DNA Chart, in hopes more men would do a DNA test.

Maybe there is something I wanted to point out about the DNA chart.  There were too many men named John, Thomas and William Lewis!  Even with documents errors are likely to arise in research.  I am not sure about my research after a certain point, even with documentation, because of the common names, and the dates of individuals are often close..  The DNA chart wants info on the  farthest back male Lewis research, which makes possible research errors.  I would rather see the DNA of Lewis men in my line that are not so far back.  The DNA Chart cannot lie concerning which lines are the most similar.  The research may not be correct on  these lines.

  • Rosemary Taylor

Some researchers believe my Henry Lewis line migrated south to Virginia from Haverford, Delaware County, Pennsylvania with a group of Quakers.  The immigrant was named Henry Lewis, born about 1640, in Narberth, Pembrokshire, Wales.  This may be my line, but it also may not be correct.  There is a possibility my Henry came from a different line.  This is with documents.  Based on my research of other families related to Henry Lewis and the next couple of generations of his descendant, I do not see them as Quakers, but  Henry may have left that faith.  I was hoping DNA evidence would help sort out the men named Henry Lewis in 1700's Virginia.  I was hoping for a name in the chart that I was sure was in my line.  I did not find this.  I already know it is very likely my line came from Wales, no matter which Henry is the correct one.  In fact the two men named Henry might be related farther back.  I have been researching these Lewis as thoroughly as possible, and there is a problem.

  • Rosemary Taylor

I did not see DNA evidence from the line of Thomas Lodowyc Lewis of early New York.  I am disappointed.

  • Rosemary Taylor

It looks like your Lewis are not the same family as mine.  Sorry.

  • Dichotomy2u

Are there any of the Kansas?Oklahoma Lewis' participating on the Dna tree? I looked but can't find my connection. http://mylewis.tribalpages.com/tribe/browse?userid=mylewis&mmg=...

  • Rosemary Taylor

I don't know if there were any Lewis participating in the DNA chart from Oklahoma.  This was my point.  It is too hard to tell.  I had/have Lewis in Oklahoma also, but mine do not appear to connect with yours, except maybe a very long time ago.

  • Michael Alan Lewis

When laying out your ancestral line, it's important to show where your ancestors were from. There are so many Thomases, Johns, Edwards, Roberts, and just about every other given name in our line, we need to know where they lived and when in order to sort them out.

  • Michael Alan Lewis

You will likely not find DNA connections to recent ancestors. The strength of DNA research is in finding those ancient connections by comparing DNA results with genealogical documentation.

DNA results are only relative, since so many genealogical lineages share similar DNA profiles. We can use DNA to provide direction for our paper research, but it will be unlikely to reveal specific relationships.

  • Rosemary Taylor

When there are surnames, like Lewis, with different haplogroups.  The DNA results helps.
