  • Jamie Neal

Does anyone have an Adkins connection? My gggrandfather was Adam Adkins (m. Bertha McDaniel). He was born in 1885 in Fentress County. As far as I can tell, his parents were Ewell Adkins and Sarah Cross, but I don't have any documented proof of it.

I am the new administrator for the Hankins group. My family came from New Jersey, through North Carolina, and made their way down to Tennessee, where they made there home. My great grandfather Benjamin Harden Hankins donated the land that had a school built on it. If you would like to know more please visit The Hankins Group. I am new to both the site, and to genealogy wise. Please have a little patience with me. Thank You---Jeanne

My interest lies in the Carothers clan who lived in Hickman County, Tennessee. The family began when William Howell Carothers moved to Tennessee from Georgia about 1828.He was married first to Sarah Lacy who died in her 20s about 1833. William then married Sarah Mariah Barr. From William and these two ladies, came the Hickman County Carothers. Phillip

I am researching the descendants of Josiah Thornton & wife Ester Ferguson?. Both were born in Spartanburg Co., SC. They traveled with their family to TN & settled in Hickman Co. abt. 1813. Many of their descendants continue to live in Hickman Co.

I am also researching other family lines who traveled through TN prior to settling in Tishomingo Co., MS & other states. The TN counties I am researching are Blount, Grundy and Warren.
  • Rosemary Taylor

I research Reagan and Huskey in Sevier County, and Pigg and related families in Warren County. My families had moved on before the Civil War.
  • Rosemary Taylor

I would like to find my correct Williams and Brown. I have information on them in Missouri in the 1800s, but I have not found their records in Tennessee.
  • Betty Vaughn

    Rosemary,

One line that I am working on is Thomas Williams who was born in NC about 1757 and was living in TN by 1803. He was some how connected to or traveling with a band of Cherokees led by Chief Bowls who took his band from NC to TN to Missiouri then down to Texas by 1819.
Thomas Williams had two sons, Leonard & William, who married Cherokee and were translators and Indian Scouts later in Texas.
Thomas lived in Rusk Co, TX and died the at William's Settlement in 1835.
  • Rosemary Taylor

I have research on Henry Williams, b. c1822 KY or TN. In 1860, Madison Co., Missouri he was living next-door to an older man named James Williams, c 1797 TN. Family stories say the Williams were Indians. When Henry Williams moved to Kansas shortly after the Civil War, his land was actually located in what was then Indian Territory, but a surveying error moved him into Kansas. One of his sons was named Thomas. I know who Chief Bowls is.
  • Rosemary Taylor

I have another family of Williams in Tennessee. Elizabeth Williams of Coffee County who married Squire Brown, b c 1795 Pickens Co SC., moved from TN to Texas Co., Missouri in I believe it is the 1860 census. Their daughter married Smith in the 1850s probably in Missouri, and died young, but he moved to near Paris, Texas after the Civil War. They had some kind of ties to Texas and Indian Territory. I have often wondered if my two Williams families were related farther back.
  • Rosemary Taylor

Betty, Thank you for the information on Williams.
  • Phillip Wayne Cushman

I am looking for information in both east and west: Smiths in Scott County, Tennessee and Cushmans in Cheatham and Montgomery County. Both families were dirt poor and information dries up in the mid-1800s.
  • Judy Week

In the early years, groups of families often traveled together from one area of the country to another. My Ewings, Cusicks and a number of other families traveled from VA to Sevier/Blount Co., TN in early 1800's. The families continued to lived in close proximity.

The census indexes proved helpful when searching for a particular individual. This was especially true when I hit a dead end. I would research a member of a neighboring family only to discover he/she married a member of the family I was originally researching.

I have the following Blount Co. books:
Blount County, Tennessee Marriages 1795-1865 by Will E. Parham
Blount County, Tennessee, Deeds Deed Book 1 1795-1819 Abstracted by
    Mrs. Jane Kiser Thomas
History of Blount County, Tennessee From War Trail to Landing Strip
1795-1955 Revised ny Inez E. Burns
Blount County Tennesse Cemetery Records Including Blount Section of Loudon and Monroe Counties by Edith B. Little.
I would be willing do look up info.

This is true in several of my lines that have resided in the Overton, Pickett, and Fentress County area since around 1813. Then I have another line that came from Pennsylvania into the Fentress County around 1850-60, actually two lines that had inter married long before reaching Tennessee. Except for my father's paternal line which was from Georgia/South Carolina, my lines have been in that area of Tennessee for so long that I have retired to Tennessee in order to work on my genealogy.
  • Robin R. Cordell-Inge

I have hit a brick wall! Since last December, I have been looking for a Finest Estell Walker, b: 1 August 1880... somewhere in Tennessee (some documents sayt 1883, but death record says 1880). He married Carrie Calline Hamilton on 21 October 1900 in Jack Co, TX. I can't locate his parents at all, and the living family members dont know either. Very special project for my Mother-in-law...
  • Christina Goss Thornton

I am researching the George and Perry families from Lincoln County, Tennessee. Particularly William George who married Nancy Perry. Would love to share information with others from this line.
  • Marti Martin

Robin--I found Estel living with his sister Mollie Combs in 1900 census in Jack Co Texas---the age is right--then on Public family trees on ancestrycom I found Finest and Mollie listed as the children of Samuel H Walker b 1847 in Tenn and Rose Bostick b 1854 in Alabama, which matches the census info. This tree was posted by a Robin Inge. If you don't subscribe to ancestry, I can send her a message if you want.
  • Robin R. Cordell-Inge

Thanks Marti... That is me, I added it about 3 am this morning.... another friend located it for me. My subscriprtion has run out, need to renew it so I can search... Thanks
  • Marti Martin

  • Stephen Allan Patrick

I am researching many families who lived in Tipton County Tennessee. I made a discovery in the 1860 US Census that indicated that one of my ancestor families had several children, previously unmentioned.

James McLister [spelled McLeaster in the 1860 Census record] and wife Margaret are listed as having a male child, A. McLeaster, age 10 (1850) born SC ... and daughter H McLeaster, age 3, (1857) born TN.

The only child of James and Margaret McLister that i have on record is William Alexander McLister (1864-1919) who is my great-grandfather. I hope someone else may have some indication of these other children. If they survived would have been 20 and 13 respectively in the 1870 Census, but they are only listed in the 1860 Census.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Letting anyone that is interested there is a website called titlesearcher that has all the deeds (almost) from Washington County, Tn scanned in. There is a 7 day free trial period, then the website costs $35/monthly. There is a cost of about $2.00 for copies/page I think. I will know more later when I try it out. I have 16 deeds in that county and have copies of about 9 in Sullivan County. Hunting hard for a man who was suppose to be Scotch-Irish but think he is Scot and may have come into the country in Charleston???
  • Donna Atkinson

Looking for families that are related to Robert Cowan b. 1744. He lived in Sullivan County, Tn until 1826 and is buried in the Old Delaney Cemetery (which I understand has a different name today). Will take about any information. DNA makes him not a member of any of the Philadelphia Cowans in the same area. He is more like a McDonald in dna. His wife was a daughter of General George Rutledge. Her name was Nancy. I have the line all the way back to him and it has been reproven for 30 years but the dna threw us a loop.
  • Ron White

I am trying to find out about my GGGrandfather Jasper Atchley who was born in East Tennessee about 1825. I find no record of him till 1847 when he married Elizabeth Wells, also from East Tennessee. They were married in Madison County Alabama. I have found her lineage all the way back to England and France. I have reason to believe that Jasper's first name might have been James but I'm not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • John Hale

A before unknown cousin was located who is theĀ great granddaughter of Henry Hale a brother to John Hale, my great grandfather. She stated that her mother (Mary Quinn) always told her and her brother they were not really Hale. They were AKERS. Her mother told them an Aker was adopted either by Henry Hale or his father John Hale, my great great grandfather.

Henry Hale, his brothers, Silas and Madison are shown in the 1860 census for Magoffin County, Ky and the 1870 census for Hawkins County, TN.

Would any one know of any Acker/Aker/Akers that was taken in by a Hale family? Thanks for any help.

    John Hale
