I Have found my Great Great Grandparents Hale, in TN. before that I don't know
  • Michelle Stuart

Who were they? What part of Tennesse? I am in Tennessee and my Hale line all came from Tennessee by way of Virginia and Maryland.
  • Roy Hale

Beyond the location in Tennessee, the Y-DNA, if any male Hales in your line have tested, would also be a good indicator. The direct line males of this particular bunch all belong to Y-DNA Haplogroup I2a2* Isles B2.
  • Michelle Stuart

Yes, I have DNA from my Hale line and it is 12a.I think you and I have a distance of 4 with 67 markers and that you match Jaime the most.
  • Susan Teresa Holmes

My sister copied info our Grandmother had, this is how it went. Great Great Grandpa Hale was Lewis Hale b: 1821TN. d: 1912 in CA. buried Potter Valley CA. Louisa Hale b:1830 d:1881 buried next to Lewis. Daughter Ella Nora(Hale) Son, Charles Samuel Hale, and poss John, and sister Emily. Members of the Methodist church and were of English German and some Irish Descent. Charles Samuel Hale died at Colusa, CA. Oct. 19, 1904, a native of Missouri. Funeral Christ Church in Williams CA. The Hales crossed the plains in wagon train with Gillespies, who went to Yuba Co. and the Hales went to Sonoma. then on to Mendocino county, and settled in Potter Valley, CA.. both families.

    Susan,

I found a Lewis Hale listed as the earliest known ancestor for one of the folks at the Hale DNA project at Familytree.DNA (http://www.familytreedna.com/public/hale/default.aspx?section=yresults)

He was a generation too early for your Lewis (Lewis Hale b:5 Jul 1794 Greene Co., TN), but he might be your Lewis' father or uncle.

The DNA profile does match our group. In fact, it's closer to the family mode than my own.
  • Michelle Stuart

There are actually 2 Lewis Hale's on there. One is 12a and one is r1b1 something.I am a close match to the 12a Lewis. It is hard to get some of these Hale's that have had dna to get back with you when you write to them though to find out further info.

I ordered records listed with Native Daughters of the Golden West, one of them is a Carrick Hale, place of Birth, Calif. dob. 11-25-1855. He is listed as a Grocer in Napa county. Spouse, Mary P. Ball married 06- 16- 1880, also listed one child named Edna. Anybody have this Hale, I have seen a pix of Hale's Grocery in old pix from that area.

If anyone recognizes any names in here, and can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. Right now, I'm just randomly searching for lines of Hales in Tennessee to see if I can track down Elijah's family. He may have had a relative (nephew?) named Isham Hale, who named his own son Elijah (b. 1847 in TN, d. abt 1901 in Missouri).
  • Michelle Stuart

Kimberly, I have an Elijah Milsap Hale unsure of dob and born around Blount County but not sure what county exactly. He is the son of Alexander Hale and Sarah Billingsly. He is in the Nicholas Hale line as the great great grandson of Nicholas the second and Frances Garrett. This Elijah appears to have been born abt 1789.
  • Johnny Hale

I believe the DNA testing is the best way to qualify your line to the Nicholas II tree. But, it may be difficult to find the exact matches in the tree, as I am finding in my research.
  • Michelle Stuart

I also find it difficult to find a match. My closest dna match is a Burgess who's ancestor was an fathered by a Hale from Virginia.
  • Roy Hale

Since John sort of raised the issue, has any one else noticed that we seem to have had a lot of Y-DNA mutations for folks that can't be much more than 8 - 10 generations from one another? Just how high is the background radiation level in East Tennessee?
  • John Hale

Seeking info on my gg grandfather (John Hale). He was possibly born 1808-1820 in one of these Viginia counties; Grayson, Washington, or Wythe. He is show in the 1850 census for Perry County, KY with his wife Sally (Sarha Fawbush, born about 1822 in Sullivan County, TN), and the 1860 census for Magoffin County, KY. His son William was born about1842 in Russel County, Virginia. Thanks for any help.

I come from the Elijah Hale(Haile) and Massa line through the James Hale family.  I am trying to find Elijah's parents.  I am checking out Joab Hale and Lavinia Dill who moved from South Carolina to Smith County Tennesee between 1800 and 1805.  If anyone has any other info on this ancestral line, I would love to hear from them.
  • Roy Hale

Mary Louise, do you have the middle name or middle Initial for your James or Elijah?
  • Mary Louise Baxter

In most of the records , this Elijah doesn't have any initial.  And, actually this is not my own family but that of a neighbor, Val Hale.  Do you have any info on this line?  Lou
  • Lisa Landrum

I'm not a descendant of Nicholas Hale but my 4th great grandfather, Zack Cage, was a slave owned by of his daughter Elizabeth Hale Stephenson Cage and her 2nd husband William Cage.  He was listed in William Cage's 1811 will as one of the 3 slaves he "got with" her and was willing back to her. He was also one of the 3 colored polls that were listed with her on the Washington Co. TN tax roll of 1819.

I am looking for any information on when Elizabeth might have died and/or Emancipated her slaves, as Zack was listed on the 1850 census as a free man living in Rutherford Co. TN.

I know that several of the Hale family members emancipated their slaves in their wills.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

    Lisa

  • Lisa Landrum

Just wanted to share that I have FINALLY found the Emancipation record of my 4th GR Grandfather, Zack Cage!  He and another slave, Elijah, were emancipated by Elizabeth Hale Stephenson Cage in 1823 in Washington County, TN. Five years later, Elizabeth sold Zack a slave named Ben (possibly his brother) via her brother Joshua Hale of Giles County, Pulaski, TN.

I had always assumed that Elizabeth had emancipated Zack in her will (like countless other Hale family members) so I was very surprised and delighted to learn that she had, in fact, emancipated him of her own accord.

  • Jaime L Haas

Hail, Hales all, and happy tidings for the coming Christmas season--just reading recent posts and realized I haven't said anything in awhile.  I'm still up here in Chicago, occasionally trying to figure out who my Nicholas Hale-descended grandfather was.  All I know about him was that he was a red-haired man living in Chicago in 1928, that he supposedly was a newspaper reporter, and that he had a pet monkey!  Yes, that was all I knew of my paternal genetic gramps...LOL!...until I took the yDNA test and discovered my descent, through him, from Nicholas Hale.  However, "Red" may or may not have had the last name "Hale," so it's pretty hard to know where to begin my search up here.  I also took a genetic ethnicity background test, to see if I possibly had any African-American dna in my background from "Red," but this proved to be a negative--all northern Euro genes for me, so the theory of "Red" being possibly descended from an African-American descendant of Nicholas Hale who "passed" is also out the window.  I think my nearest Hale yDNA relative is still Michelle Stuart, and our MRCA is back about 12 generations, am I right, Michelle, which I figure is about 150-200 years ago...if anybody has any ideas, suggestions, or info that might help me in identifying "Red," I'd sure love to hear from you!  Take care--Jaime "Hale" Haas

  • Michelle Stuart

You are right Jaime and I am still trying to figure this out too!One day will will find RED and wouldnt it be funny if his name really were RED??LOL
Lisa- I am so happy for you and that you have found this record! My Hale line came through Washington County too!

  • John Hale

I think I might be related to the Nicholas Hale/Haile line. I was researching my Hale family tree at Ancestry.com and I found a strange link to Nicholas Hale/Haile line, not through my Hale surmane, but through my grandmother Mary Elizabetn Cooper. I little history on my Hale line:

My gg grandfather - John Hale was born 1800-1820 in one of these Virginia counties: Grayson, Washington, or Wythe. According to a document from his son William (born about 1834 in Russel County, Virginia), his father - John Hale (my gg grandfather) was born about 1808 in Avington, Virginia. I could not find a Avington, but did find Abingdon, Washington County, Virginia, but no proof of his birth there. According to Wythe County Historical Society, there were no records of a Hale family living in Wythe during the time he would have been born. I do have a census record for Perry County, Kentucky date 1850 showing John Hale, his wife Sally "Sarah" Fawbush and their children: William, Mary Ann, Henry, and Liza. John and Sarah are also shown in the 1860 census for Magoffin County, Kentucky. A birth record for a child - Brackenridge born 1861, shows John Hale's birth place a Wythe, Virginia and Sarah's birth place asTennessee.

My connection to the Nicholas Hale/Haile line, through my grandmother Mary Elizabeth Cooper appears to begin with Rebecca Haile, born 1665, Richmond, Wise, VA, died 1712 Richmond Henrico, VA); she was married to John Owen, born 1660, died 1712. Rebecca Haile's parents appear to be Francis Haile (1639-1694) and Jane Rozier (1640-). The line continues with: Nicholas Haile (1628 Kent, England, died 1668 TIdwater, lancaster, VA); wife of Nicholas is Mary Travers (1632-1671) Lancaster, VA. Nicholas's father appears to be George Haile ( born 1602 Stone, England, died 1660 Nothlumberland, VA). Wife of George appears to Mary Blood) Born 1602 Bristol, Somerset, England, died 1672, Lancxaster, VA). Farther to George Haile appears to be Nicholas Hale (born 1570 England, died 1657 Lancaster, VA). Wife of Nicholas Hale appears to be Rose Bond (born 1570, Kings Walden, Hertfordshire England died 1648 Kings Walden, Hertfordshire England).

Is this the Nicholas Hale/Haile line that this forum is about? If yes, can any one help trying to connect my Hale family to this Nicholas Hale/Haile line? Thanks for any help

    John Hale

  • Lisa Landrum

Thanks Michelle! I'm still on cloud 9 over that find! :)

  • Michelle Stuart

John this is the Nicholas Hale that is in your line. I know that there are many Hale lines from Virginia but they all lead back to Nicholas. Anyone on here will be happy to help you in any way that we can. Please feel free to email me directly and I will try to help you.Have you had DNA testing done?

  • John Hale

Thanks for info Michelle. I'm trying to find if my Hale line is related to the Nicholas Hale/Haile line. I do relate through my father's mother (my grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Cooper), but I'm hoping that someone can help me discover my gg grandfather's parents, siblings, place of birth, etc.

My Hale line goes as follows:

    Me - John Hale

My father -  John J Hale – born 16 Jul 1927 in Inez, Martin Co., Kentucky; died 23 Dec, 1986, Stouder Memorial Hospital, Troy, Ohio.

My grandfather -  John H. Hale - born 23 Jan 1889 in Salyersville, Magoffin Co., Kentucky.   Death: 31 JAN 1955 Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky. Burial: 2 Feb 1955. Lakevillecaptain Powers Cem, Magoffin County, Kentucky.  He married  Mary Elizabeth Cooper.

My great grandfather -  John Hale, born 10 Aug, 1853 in Perry County,  Kentucky.  He married first Nancy Trusty - born Nov 27 1857 in Morgan County, Kentucky. She is the daughter of Daniel Trusty and Leaner Eldridge; and second marriage to Margaret Trusty.

My great great grandfather -   John Hale - born 1800-1810 in one of these Virginia counties: Grayson, Washington, or Wythe. According to the Wyhte County Historical Society no Hale families were living in Wythe county during the time John Hale would have been born in the county.  They did say that several male children were born in Grayson county that matched the birth time period for John Hale. According to a document that John Hale’s son Willam (born about 1834 in Russell county, VA provided in his Guion Miller Roll application, William stated that his father was born 1808 near Avington, VA. I could not find Avington, VA, but I did find Abingdon, Washington county, VA. William also stated in this document that his father was half Cherokee.John  Hale married Sarah Fawbush - born 1822 in Sullivan, Tennessee.

I have no info on who my great great grandfather’s parents were. I ‘m trying to find out this info to further my research on my Hale surname. Is it possible that my  great great grandfather is aloa related the Nicholas Hale/Haile (born 1628 in Kent England and died 1668 in Tidewater, VA) line?

    Thanks for any help.

I did a search on Heritage Quest, through my local Library, Books, Lewis Hale, TN

and found  a book with many Hales, from early 1600's on, with marriage records. I downloaded a pdf version, but don't know if I can share with you all. if any one knows if its ok, I would love to post it here.

Hale%20Family.pdf  ok, I gave it a try, hope someone can see it.

Thanks Susan for sharing your info!

John I am almost positive that you will be a double Hale as it were..I am sure that both of your lines descend from the same Nicholas Hale.If you will send me your ancestry name I will give you access to my tree..You may or may not find it helpful in your search. please send an email directly if you have any questions that I might be able to help you with. my email is   myheartbelongs2england@gmail.com

    Thanks Michelle,

An email is on its way to you.

  • John Hale

    I

Michelle, in the 1860 census for Magoffin County,KY two John Hale families lived in the county, my gg grandfather (John Hale, born 1808-1820 in one of these VA counties: Grayson, Washington, or Wythe); and John Hale (born 1813-1818 Floyd County, KY). I never thought much about the John born in Floyd County, KY, as I didn't think we were related, until now. Through Ancestry.com family trees it seems he is my 4th cousin 7x removed through my grandmother - Mary Elizabeth Cooper (my father's mother's line). Then in another tree it seems that the two John's may be half-brothers, through my father's Hale line. Same father (Benjamin Hale (( b 1768 Franklin County, VA – died 1829 Floyd County, VA)) different mothers (Dicey Franklin and Mary "Polly" Hollandsworth). If this is correct then the John Hale born in Floyd County, KY is my 4th cousin 7x removed on my grandma Cooper's line and my 2nd great uncle on my father's Hale line. This is seems to make more sense than anything I've had on trying to find my gg grandfathers parents, and it seems to make sense that the two John Hale's were in Magoffin County, KY in the 1860 census.

Do you think or have any info that could support this theory? Thanks for any help.

Benjamin Hale line is as follows:

    Nicholas Haile (1628-1668)

    Joseph Haile (1647 - 1718)

    Son of Nicholas

    John Hale (1706 - 1770)

    Son of Joseph

    Joseph Hale (1746 - 1803)

    Son of John

    Benjamin Hale (1768 - 1829)

    Son of Joseph

    John Hale (1815 - 1887)

    Son of Benjamin

    John Hale (1850 - 1938)

    Son of John

    John H. Hale (1888 - )

    Son of John

    John J Hale (1927 - 1986)

    Son of John H.

    John Hale

You are the son of John J

    John Hale

  • Michelle Stuart

This is great news for you John! If I can help in any way please let me know..

  • Roy Hale

John, I think you may have skipped a generation. I've seen no evidence that the first Nicholas had a son named Joseph. As best I can determine only three children survived to adulthood-- George, Mary (named for mother), and Nicholas Jr. George, who served as both a Lancaster County JP and as a member of the House of Burgesses, had a son named Joseph, and his brother Nicholas Jr had a grandson by that name (the son of his son George).
  • John Hale

Roy, I just checked my tree at Ancestry.com and I think you're right. I have 4 generations between Mary Jane Bays and Nicholas Haile on  my grandmother Copper's line and only 3 generations between my gg grandfather Johhn Hale and Nicholas Haile on my Hale line. I do show two Joseph's as sons of Nicholas Haile. One born 1647-1718 and on born 1656.

I've just looked t the tree again and can't seem to find where the other generation might come from for the Hale line. Well, back to the grind stone.

  • John Hale

Roy, this is want I found after I corrected my family tree, but still seems that I'm still missing 4 generations. When I research Richard Haile it seems to lead to Nicholas Haile (1628-1668) being his father. Can you help me?

    This is my Hale line:
    Richard Haile (1650 - 1720)
    my 6th great grandfather
    Son of Richard
    Son of John
    Son of John
    Son of Benjamin
    Son of John
    Son of John
    Son of John H.
You are the son of John J

This is my Cooper line: to Nicholas Haile (1628-1668):

    Nicholas Haile (1628 - 1668)
    my 10th great grandfather
    Son of Nicholas
    Daughter of Francis
    Son of Rebecca
    Son of Richard
    Son of Richard
    Daughter of Richard W
    Son of Sarah
    Daughter of Isham
    Son of Mary Jane
    Daughter of William Green
    Son of Mary Elizabeth
You are the son of John J
  • John Hale

Michelle and Roy this is what I tnink is more correct:

    Nicholas Haile (1628 - 1668)
    My 9th great grandfather
    Son of Nicholas

    Son of Nicholas
    Son of Nicholas
    Son of Nicholas
    Son of John
    Son of Benjamin
    Son of Benjamin

    Son of John

    Son of John
    Son of John H.

    Me, son of John J

But, this still seems to be 1 gerneration off from my Cooper line:

    Nicholas Haile (1628 - 1668)
    my 10th great grandfather
    Son of Nicholas
    Daughter of Francis
    Son of Rebecca
    Son of Richard
    Son of Richard
    Daughter of Richard W
    Son of Sarah
    Daughter of Isham
    Son of Mary Jane
    Daughter of William Green
    Son of Mary Elizabeth
    Me, son of John J

  • Roy Hale

John, the Cooper line still looks like there is a generation that's wrong or missing immediately after the first Nicholas (He didn't have a son who survived to adulthood named Francis. His only surviving children were George, Mary, and Nicholas Jr.). I don't remember a grandson by that name either, but I would have to check some of my resource books when I get home to be sure. Will check and get back to you.
  • John Hale

    Thanks Roy.

Hello all you Where in the Hale members.

I've come to the discovery, that while I am connected to the Nicholas Hale/Haile line form Tidewater, VA through my father's (John Hale) mother, my grandmother (Mary Elizabeth Cooper, I think my gg grandfather - John Hale (born in VA), may not be a Hale.

I looked a the yDNA matches I have at Family Tree DNA and saw that the only match I have at the Hale DNA Project, is with a known Hale cousin and a match with a person of the surname Aker, and I've just discovered that my cousin also matches this same Aker. This means that my gg grandfather could not be a Hale and was probably an Aker and was adopted by a Hale family, or hired by a Hale family and changed his name.

I am looking into info of Aker who may have been in VA at the time my gg grandfather was in VA.

In the will of Nicholas Haile below, who is the John Hale/Haile that Nicholas' son Amon sold the land to?

Will Book 1.  I Nicholas Hale, senr, of Washington County and state of Tennessee being of a sound mind and memory thanks be to Almighty God do by these presents make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner following:

First--I have given to my six sons, Richard, William, Nicholas, Nathan, Amon and Joshua heretofore their full portion in lieu and other property and so my will is my six sons above mentioned to receive one dollar out of my estate each of them and no more.

Secondly-- after all my lawful debts being paid, my will is my three daughters, Elizabeth Cage, Ruth Hale and Sarah Gray to have the remainder of my personal estate to be equally divided among them.

Thirdly--A certain tract or parcel of land lying along Thomas Murrays line and Thomas --rroms line and Michael Eddlemons line supposed to be between eighty or ninety acres to be equally divided between  the heirs of John Hale, dec'd, and reason for this is the said John Hale dec'd estate being a piece of land I gave to my son Amon Hale and he sold it to the said John Hale and they never had any title from me for it yet so my will is to leave it as above.

Fourthly--my will is that my maletto man, Bob, at my death be set at his liberty and become a free man--except there be a crop on hand, then at the coming in of the crop to be set at his liberty.

Fifthly--My will is that my son, Robert Hale, have the whole managing of my affairs wherefrom I set my hand and seal this 29th day of April, 1807 Nicholas Hale, Sr, (Seal) Loyd + Ford, George X. Jackson,  Rolina Berry His Mark        His Mark

The foregoing will was proven in open court by the oaths of  Loyd Foard and George Jackson, two of the subscribing witnesses thereto at the July session of 1818 and ordered to be recorded.

Anyone on here descend from John W. Hale? I am sure there is but my mind is blank at the moment.

Update on my research of my Hale line.

A before unknown cousin was located who is the great granddaughter of Henry Hale a brother to John Hale, my great grandfather. She stated that her mother (Mary Quinn) always told her and her brother they were not really Hale. They were AKERS. Her mother told them an Aker was adopted either by Henry Hale or his father John Hale, my great great grandfather.

Hi, I am hoping someone may be able to help me. I am the great grand daughter of Chester V Hale. He was born in Texas 1876 to David M and Drucilla Foote Hale. He had 2 brothers Edgar & George. David was born in TN 1848, died in 1880 in Collin County Texas. David's father was A Hale. This is where the mystery begins. In the 1850 Collin county Texas census, he is listed as A Hale, born in TN and is 54 years old. He died after 1853 as his wife Hannah is remarried to Joshua Knoy in the 1860 census.  After years of research we have no clue as to who A Hale is or who his family is...any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Trying to find if the name Hill changed to Hale/Haile. I have Lord Robert (Lord of the Manor of Rangeworthy) I Hale (BORN: 1520 in Dursley, Gloucestershire, England; DIED: 1585 in Wotton Under Edge, Gloucestershire, England). Lord Robert’s father may be John Hale (BORN: 1495 in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England; DIED: 1535 in England). John’s father is shown as: Giles Haile Hill (BORN: 1475 in Houndstone, Somerset, England; DIED: 30 Apr. 1547 in Cornwall, England.

How does the Haile Hill fit? Was the surname Hale/Haile and the Hill signify a place name, or was the surname Hill and was changed to Hale/Haile?

    Thanks for any help.

I believe I might descend from Nicholas Hale. My name is John Hale. I can trace my family back to John Hale(s) b. abt 1750, d. 1801 in modern day King George County, Virginia in the Northern Neck. I am having trouble verifying his ancestors except that I believe his father may have been Benjamin, and his father may have been George(born abt. 1702 who died in King George abt 1752 who was married to Susannah Edrington. I can't definitively say that this George is the son of George Nicholas Hale, who descended originally from Nicholas Hale. I have found that my George Hale(s) b.1702-1756 may have had a John Hales (1678-1727) instead of George Nicholas as his father. Can anyone shed any light on when possibly the Hale(s) migrated to then Westmoreland/Stafford Counties which today in current King George County?

    Hello all,

I believe I also descend from Nicholas Hale/Haile but I am having some problems connecting the dots. I am currently working on my Hale line migrating from Patrick County, Virginia to Gallia County, Ohio. My mother is a Hale. This is what I have and know so far.

My grandfather was born Bobby Lee Hale, later changed to Robert due to the U.S. Navy.

Bobbie (Robert) Lee Hale 1925-2003 (Rockbridge, Ohio/Columbus, Ohio) m. Patricia Gene Kelly.

Born to George Victor Hale 1900-1974 (Gallia Co, OH/Columbus, Ohio) m. Hilda Ellen Grove

Born to George W Hale 1881-1908 (Gallia Co, OH) m. Jesse Cofer.

Born to John N Hale 1847-1912 (Gallia Co. OH) m. Susannah "Anna" Large.

Born to William Hale ?1801 or 1811 (somewhere in Virginia) m. Judith "Juda" Ware or Nare.

I become stuck after William. I believe at this point, this Hale side migrated from Patrick County, Virginia to Gallia County, Ohio. And I believe this line originates from a James Hale and Polly (Mary) Cummings.

Recently, I have been reading history books on Jackson County, Ohio and The Hanging Rock region of Ohio. There is mention of a James, John, and Moses Hale in each history. Moses and John were sons of James and Polly Cummings Hale. They also had a son William, however that William moved to Tennessee, so it is not my William. A search of the other Hale brothers, do not bring another William Hale. This is why I am currently stuck on William Hale.

I would love to make contact with anyone on the board that is familiar with the Ohio Hale line.
