I was relaying all this information to my mother, who said she thought that Karin was from Skåne.....so that leaves it wide open, as I have no other information at the moment. So, now I have traced G. A. Hultqvist back several generations, and have come across a Britta (also listed on her birth record as Brittagitta) Regina Hultqvist, b. 20 May 1781 in Solberga. Her father is listed as a Magister, or Magitter, and I haven't been able to find the translation anywhere. Her mother is listed as fru Mätta Lovisa Hultquist. She married Peter Johansson, who is designated as a "socknesker (?)", and their son, Jonas also had that designation, and began using Hultqvist as his surname, rather than Petersson, as at first. I think it was after Britta's parents either left the parish or died, that he began using that name.

Any suggestions on how I might find out what those titles mean?

Some of these things just seem a little odd, since they are a bit different than the way most of the listings were given in that parish.

I forgot to say that Britta's father was Jonas Hultquist.

Hello Kristen! Which Solberga (parish) is it? I can try and look at "Socknesker" with my swedish eyes. A magister was a male teacher. Also, the name Brittagitta could be the name Birgitta and Mätta - Märta. 

Britta's birth record is in Södra-Solberga. On ArkivDigital, it is image 114, which is page 215,in the birth records from 1690-1781.

The household examination roll is from Myresjö parish in Jönkoping. The farm name is Stora Måla Rote Ekornehult. On ArkivDigital, it is image 127, which is on page 119 in the records from 1826 - 1834. This is where Peter Johansson is listed as "sockneskr" -- or whatever it is.

Hello again! The word appears to be "socknesHr." which could be short for "sockneherre". It's a very old term and I am not sure how to translate it properly. Looking it up!

BrittGitta's father is male teacher Jonas Hultqvist. I found the family in the house records of 1792-1808 p.71. By that time the father is gone/dead and Britta has a brother, Johannes, born 28 sep 1788. I've looked for Jonas H in the death records of 1788-1792 with no luck… but it's very hard to read those pages. I'll keep looking and see if I can find anything else. 

I spoke to an old history teaching friend and his guess of translation was "the one chosen by vote to run the village/parish". Jonas seems to have been a comminister as well.

Hi to all my "Swedish Ancestors"....My maternal grandfather, Franz Axel Goethe Ofeldt (Afeldt) immigrated from Norrkoping, Sweden with his parents & 3 brothers in the late 1800's and established a boat building yard in Brooklyn NY.  Found the graves of my GGrrandparents in the cemetary in Brooklyn, NY.

There is a lot of information regarding the OFELDT steam boiler/steam car on the internet...& many Ofeldt ancestors in Rockland County, New York.

Hello - I am searching for my great grandfather with a very common name and not much information.  I am hoping someone can help me.  His name was Charles A. Anderson.  He was a shoemaker.  He was born about August 1851 in Sweden.  His mother's name was Johanna Anderson.  On January 22, 1876 he married Clara Andersdotter in Burlington, Iowa, USA.  Clara was born on September 14, 1857. Stora Hester. Vastra Ryd (E).  She emigrated in 1870. I believe Charles emigrated about the same time.  I do not know if knowing about Clara will help fiind Charles.  In the 1870 United States Federal Census, I have found a family consisting of Johanna Anderson (55 years of age), Frank Anderson (23 years of age), and Charles Anderson (20 years of age) living in Burlington, Iowa, USA.  I do not know if this is the Charles I am looking for.  They were living with the Yanson family (Charles Yanson, Mary Yanson, and Eva Yanson).  After this census I can find no further information on the Yanson's.  I am wondering if they changed their name.  Anyway, back to Charles.  Any help you can give me will be appreciated.  I wish I had more information to provide.  Thank you so very much.

M Graham, are you sure about Clara's birth date? I've found a Clara Andersdotter in Stora hester with the birth date 18/4 - 57. I have screenshots and translations of the church books for you if you think she is "the" Clara. She emigrated 1870 with her mother and two siblings. Do you have an e-mail address I could send them to?

Also - "Charles" is probably "Carl" in Sweden. "Anderson" is probably "Andersson" and "Yanson" - "Jansson". Do you know what name the A stand for in Charles name?

I was wondering if anyone could transcribe the last line in this image.  For reference its a document from 1880.  THe first name ia A. Nyberg, the second is (i presume mother) Carolina, then "Son, Oscar", but I can't figure out the name of the person on the last line, nor the city name listed.  Any suiggestions? 

Drang means a farm worker. He could have been from Odeby Parish probably in Narke.

Also, "hustru" doesn't mean mother but wife.

This excerpt presumably came from a Household Survey. Your post shows a husband, his wife, their toddler son and a (unmarried) male farm hand.  The farm hand came from Odeby parish in Örebro county (column title probably says birth place).          Ödeby parish is in Glanshammars härad (district) and since 1974 part of Örebro kommun (a municipality) near and including the city of Örebro about 90 miles west of Stockholm. If you Google Ödeby socken (copy the letters so you get the Swedish characters) you will see a picture of the church.     (My family came from this county.)

I'm looking for the parents of both Anders Carlson b. 1 Jan. 1824 Torrbacken, Vargarda, Vastergotland, Sweden d. 8 April 1907 Ringo Lake, Dovre, Kandiyohi, Minnesota and his first wife Anna Maria Sellers b. unknown d. 5 June 1866 Dovre, Kandiyohi, Minnesota. They came to Minnesota from Sweden with four children. She died just eight days after they arrived. One of their children was my great grandmother, Mathilda Carlson b.18 Oct. 1864 Sweden (I don't know where in Sweden) d. Oct 1934 Superior, WI.

I found an Anders Carlsson born 1/1/1824 from Vårgårda. It took a little searching! 

1. I suspected that the village name you had posted as "Vargarda in Vestergotland" county should have been spelled with at least one Swedish letter å as in ...gård, a Swedish word for (small)farm.Using Google search Vårgårda finally materialized as the actual name in Swedish. NOTE  the Swedish letters ÅÄÖ are very important, particularly for finding place names. They appear after ...xyz in the alphabet. By the way the current county name Västra Göteland is only a few years old (1998). Your village was in Älvsborgs län (county) which may be spelled Elvsborg in old records.  Genealogical research is typically done with the old county names.

Once I got the spelling I found Vårgårda on the map. I used both Google map and my KAK Atlas from the Swedish auto club. The big problem was finding the PARISH where the records are kept. There are several in the area. I searched Kullings-Skövde, Algutstorp, and Fullestad birth records on ArkivDigital (my local Family History Center has free computer access to ArkivDigital. The three major digital archives of Swedish records, SVAR, Ancestry.com and ArkivDigital all are subscription for service. Finally I looked in the parish Siene and found it covered Vårgårda (why I cant say, the others are closer!)  On wiki.FamilySearch.org, I did look at the farm name lists for the first three parishes and I should have looked at Siene because there it is. I could have done that from home.

The household examination record shows Anders as a new child in a big family with Parents  Carl Andersson and Annika Persdotter. I can send an image of the page from the register. Siene AI:3 (1812-1826) Image 17 / page 25

I am researching Johan Albert Björkman born in Drängsered, Halland on 21 Jun 1878. I have traced him to Snöstorp, Halland in the 1912+1922 Clerical Survey. He is found on page 731 on line 11. Did he die or immigrate?  NYQVIST, Gustaf  Adolf Severin was born June 14, 1886 (parents Carl Oscar Johansson Nyqvist and Augusta Charlotta Fahlström) in Örgryte parish.  Carl died 19 February 1894 and Augusta 24 December 1895. Gustaf was first put in a poor house in Örgryte parish, then in a foster home in Forshälla from Feb 2 1898  to 13 Dec 1901 when he returned to Örgryte.  On 4 December 1909 he was listed in the Household Record of Örgryte BII:3 (1908-1913) Bild 141 as being moved to the Book of Missing Persons.  I could not find this book, a death record nor a immigration record.  Does anyone know what happened to him?

Can anyone give me specific info where "Kohagen, Ljungs Land Ljung, Ostergotlands" is located?

It is in Östergötland County, almost straight west of Norrköpping and east of Motala.  It was a Parish in the District of Gullberg in the maps prior to 1952.

Allan, I also like to always look to wiki.familysearch.org and type in the parish name if I know it to get a little briefing on the parish. Since it is a wiki, a user augmented encyclopedia, many time there may not be much data added yet, but every parish in Sweden should be there.      And of course, it doe not hurt to inquire at google.com just to see what comes up.   Be careful though, some common parish names may exist in more than one place in Sweden. Ljung may be one of those. Make sure you get the right one.

Rosenberg, C M.  "Geografisk-Statistik Handlexicon  Over Sverige." book published in 1880s gave brief notes on most place names in Sweden. Available on microfilm and on line thru Project Runeberg. Not yet finished but all page images are up. 

"Svensk Ortförteckning."  book in some big libraries. Published periodically by Swedish postal service, telephone service and railways in the 1960s. Down to farm names.

... and I should add, too, it is very important to get all 3 of the unique Swedish letters right and type them in when searching for place names.

He had a Daughter named Gertrude.

Gertrude married a man named Peter

Peter and Gertrude had a son named Oscar William Peterson. He is my great grandfather.

It is said that Per raised Oscar.

Genline was bought by Ancestry a few years ago and was to be folded into Ancestry, which has the Swedish records, but I don't like it.  When that happened,  I switched to ArchivDigital and find it a better database but had a learning curve to use it.

I think an ancestor had several children after she was 40, all illegitimate.  Could not find a different mother that would work.   Have you had ancestors giving birth in their 40's.

I am having a very difficult time finding a Birth Record in Vireda, Jönköping for the date 22 October 1793.  I usually can decipher the records.  But the records for 1792-1795 are just horrible for me to read.  Would someone be able to find the Image or Page number for me?  My 3rd great grandfather's name is Johannes Larrsson.  Thank you very much!

My grandmother's family lived near J?nk?ping, where her father had a farm. The family lost the farm and were near destitute about 1886. Any idea where I fight find records to learn more about their farm failure? It was Gragaryds rote, Dann?s Parish.
