One of my Irish ancestry surnames is HART.  There are apparently two versions of that name or at least two different ways the name appeared in Ireland.

First: The names O'Hart and Hart in Ireland are derived from the native Gaelic O'hAirt Sept that was originally located in County Meath but which later located to County Sligo.

Second: Hart was also introduced into Ulster Province by settlers from England, especially during the seventeenth century.

I don't know where in Ireland that my ancestors Teddy HART and his son, Felix HART, originated.  Both Teddy and Felix emigrated from Ireland to America in the very early 19th Century.  Teddy to Baltimore (his son, Timothy, was born there in 1810) and Felix to New York (His daughter, Catherine, was born in Ireland in 1822 and his son, Timothy, was born in New York City in 1829). Both emigrated to Texas and received Mexican Land Grants in what is now South Texas (Teddy actually died aboard ship enroute to Texas and the land grant was awarded to his wife, Mary and his son Timothy).

There were several families surnamed HART receiving land grants in what is now San Patricio and Bee Counties, Texas.  These families were apparently not related.

One of the families had originated in County Kent and were of Church of England faith. Traveling to Ireland a Tom HART converted to the Roman Catholic faith and settled in Dublin near Watlin Street.  He was martyred during the revolt of 1798.

The family moved to Ballymoney, County Wexford and from there emigrated to Texas on a Mexican Land Grant.  I don't know if this family was related to my HART family.  It doesn't appear so.  However, the coincidence of two out of a very few families with the same surname and not being related is difficult ti imagine.

Very interesting info on the Hart Family and surname spellings Richard. I don't remember if I have Hart in my linage and if so distant I do believe. I know I have some Hart's in the 1700's cemetery up the street.
  • Spirit Baker

@Barbara, too bad my friend's sister doesn't do genealogy. They are O'Brien/McCarthy's and I'm pretty sure they have Harrington in their lineage. They where born on Bell Island, Newfoundland, Canada. If I remember correctly it was 3 generations back that went to Ireland before Canada. I know they have a cousin on Ancestry who lives in Canada working on the line but I don't know who.
  • Spirit Baker

@Alberto, thanks for the Ireland link. I placed my family surname in there and it states only 140 births but I can't find info on my gg grandfather. It states: Principally located in counties:Antrim, Fermanagh, Cavan and Tyrone. His name is William Armstrong and used Wm Armstrong. I bet 100 Armstrong's came to America and 3/4 where Wm Armstrong. Any ideas?
  • Rachel Vienneau Doherty

Reference the HANLEY Family, there are some in Dalhousie, N.B. Parents were there in early 1900's for sure...deceased probably by now...Joey Hanley is now probably living in the Miramichi, New Brunswick area...in Canada.  Just a thought for you.

  • Julie Ann code

My name is Julie code from Michigan. My fathers name is William code, my grandfathers is Kenneth code. I heard my ancestors are from Ireland any info you can give me would be great.
  • Spirit Baker

@Alberto, that is the problem with William Armstrong. I can't find who his parents are, yr of birth, where and when he arrived. A huge brick wall. I know his family after, wife, children, lived in Rhode Island.
  • Spirit Baker

Wow Alberto, never thought of that. I can't figure out how to use Google Maps. I don't think it is loading right into my confuser or I'm picking out the wrong link and no one to help me.

My Father in Law just passed away in Dec. His DNA was completed just after his death, His name is Arthur Clarence Woods and his 2nd great grandad was William Woods born abt 1786 in Donaghmore, Tyrone, , Ireland. Looking for others who have had Woods Family DNA from that area in Ireland. Thanks
  • Spirit Baker

    Thanks Wayne for the link.

Sorry Gary, so far no Woods in my lineage yet in Ireland. I'm a bit stuck in that country.

  • Carol Ann

Fantastic map Alberto.  My maternal family of Quinns came from County Wexford (Enniscorthy) so I was particularly interested in checking it out.  Obviously Quinns originated elsewhere in earlier times but we have no information on this family at all other than what I found in the 1901/1911 Census.  My mother didn't ever get to meet her grandparents but did recall a few things when I shared my findings which clinched it for me.

  • Robert A Quinn

Hi Carol Ann. My Quinns (Maternal)  are from Armagh. Do you have any DNA we can compare? I am on 23andme with my chromosomal analysis and FTDNA with YDNA. Regards, Bob Quinn
  • Ann Stephens Pilon

    Hello Robert:

My husband's line has Quinns from Armagh - A James Quinn born 1782 in Tanderagee, Co. Armagh - Immigrated to Canada before 1852. Children's names that I have found are Elizabeth (my husband's connection), Daniel, John, James, Fanny and Ann - any connections.

Could someone PLEASE advise me how I get my DNA ,is it costly and how do I compare it to others!!Thank yyou ,Jim Hart Londonderry N Ireland
  • Richard Patrick Crowe

There were quite a few QUINN surnamed families who settled in South Texas during the very lat 1820's and very early 1830's on Mexican land grants as members of the POWERS & HEWITSON and McMULLEN & McGLOIN colonies.  These QUINN surnamed families settled in what is now San Patricio and Bee Counties.  At least some of the QUINN surnamed familes came from County Clare.  William QUINN, husband of my 3rd Great Grand Aunt, Bridget HART, was martyred at the Massacre at Goliad, 19 March 1836.
  • Richard Patrick Crowe

I am wondering if anyone has South Texas family connections with the names:  HART, QUINN, WALKER, McKINNEY, CRAVEN, PRIOUR or CROW.  The time line for Bee and San Patricio Counties, Texas would be 1828-1870 or so.  Most were either colonists or married to colonists of the McMULLEN & McGLOIN colonies.
  • Martha Davis

Jim, I don't know what's available across the pond for DNA testing, but I used familytreedna.com to test my brother.  You would join the Hart family group to order & there should be a Hart group administrator who can advise you as to which test.  Their test kit includes 3 cheek swabs and you would give them your earliest known ancestor info, sign a waiver giving them permission to publish results on the site, and when your results are available they send matches to you showing contact email addresses for those matches.  As I understand it, you can post your results to other DNA test sites to seek matches.  Hope this helps, Martha
  • Carol Ann

    Hi Bob Quinn

thanks for the contact:)  In response to your question on DNA - this isn't something I have ventured in to as yet.  I have attended a presentation on this topic and have read some articles on it which I found really interesting.  Could definitely be the way to go a bit down the track when I really get into this side of the family.

    From the 1911 Census:

    Thomas Quinn c1856

  • Carol Ann

Apologies Bob, I leant on the wrong key before completing my writing:)

Thomas Quinn c1856, his wife Elizabeth c1885, 1 child not living at the time of the census and could be a first born looking at dates after marriage.  Then son James c1895, daughter Bridget c1891, Frank c1893, daughter Mary born Enniscorthy 15/1/1897 died 1988 Berkshire UK - married to Harry Piper born Long Melford Suffolk UK (my grandparents).

I haven't as yet looked in to the cost of DNA and although I see if offered on various websites, unsure which is the best way to go.  Any suggestions appreciated.  cheers Carol

Alberto thanks for posting the link to the Irish Geogenealogy map.  I found it very helpful in defining my family line.  : )
  • Denis Savard

Looking for marriage or Thomas McDunn & Frances McDunn in co. Westmeath, circa 1800-1810. They migrate to Canada circa 1832-1833. Born to them is Rose, about 1812.
  • Denis Savard

Also, Patrick Burn, of Cork, who arrives in New Brunswick circa 1795-1797. Little else is known.
  • Stacey Thorpe Davis

I am looking for any information on a Micheal Byrne (or Burns) who was born circa 1838 in New York.  His parents are unknown, but he married Josephine Calhoun circa 1862 and had several children.  Micheal served in the 15th NY Cavalry during the CW and died in 1897.  Some census records show Micheal's mother being born in Ireland, but nothing else.  Any information on Micheal's parents or siblings would be grateful.
  • Robert A Quinn

Carol Ann, check out 23andme for DNA testing. They dropped their price recently and are going for volume. Their web site is very helpful, and it's easy. I didn't get any e-mails that I had messages, thus the delay. Take care. Bob Q
  • Diana L. Carlson

BURNS/BURN/BYRNE seems to be a name that is difficult to track.  I have my own Martin Burns (1820 Ireland-1877 Indiana) that I've been unable to track back to the old country.  He died before death certificates were kept.  I got the death certificate of his wife BRIDGET (1836 Ireland-1904 Indiana)  and found out that she presumably was born in Torloughmore, Co Galway, as was her parents JAMES FLYNN and MARGRET HIGGENS.  I was unable to locate any further data on them, though I tried.  Ah, how I wish Irish genealogy were as easy as Swedish genealogy has been.

DNA testing wouldn't do me any good, would it?  Since Martin would be my father's mother's paternal grandfather.....and no, I know of no direct male descendents.  Grass Creek, Indiana is a small town but I don't know where the sons of Martin's sons went, though I have tried finding some.

  • Diana L. Carlson

Forgot to mention:  a member of the Clan Campbell came up to me once and in conversation he mentioned that BURNS is a sept of CAMPBELL.  Maybe someone can use this piece of data successfully.
  • Robert A Quinn

Diana: With DNA testing through 23andme you can find men and women you match with , from siblings to Distant Cousins . Check out their web page.

  • Denis Savard

Thanks to Annemarie, i think we may have found my Patrick BYRNE/BURN mentionned below!

  • Carol Ann

Thanks Bob for the 23andme DNA info; a considerable lowering of fees that's for sure.

Hope I'm not repeating myself from previous discussions, but isn't the DNA done on the male lineage or will it work for me if I get my DNA done?

I did check the FAQ on the site but unless I missed something, didn't think this question was there:)

  • Robert A Quinn

DNA works for both men and women to find matches. DNA is constructed differently for both, but matches work just as well. Can only trace something called haplogroups through male Y DNA, but women can learn as much as men from the analyses and matches of their DNA.

  • John L Sullivan

    Hello to all,

I need to know how to find a birth record in Co. Kerry around 1830 - 1832. My GGGrandfather, John S. O'Sullivan was born in Farrannastack, Kerry, Ireland in 1830 or 1832. I don't know the parent's names. I know that John S. came to the U.S. in 1850 from Liverpool. He wrote in his diary (store ledger) that he was born in Farrannastack, Kerry, Ireland.

One of my Dad's cousins said that it is impossible to get the records from Kerry, but that was years ago. I am hoping one of you knows how I can find this lost GGGrandfather and his birth record, or any record about him. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank You,

    John L Sullivan

  • Lisa A Hughes

    Hello Everyone!

I am a new member to this group.  I was told by my Grandfather that our family is from Ireland, but I have yet been able to make it back that far, since they were apparently some very early American settlers.  The earliest I have is my GGGGrandfather, Franklin S Hughes, born 1813 in North Carolina, USA and after he married he settled in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA.  I have been unsucessful in finding his parents, but the 1880 US Federal Census states that his father was born in Tennessee, USA.  That would date his father's birth back to anywhere from 1760 - 1800, which means his father may have come from Ireland.

While on a vacation in Riviera Maya, Mexico, I ran into two separate couples from Ireland and they both directed me to County Mayo or County Gallaway.  I have snooped around some records for those counties, but it seems to be very hard to find anything dating back into the early to mid 1700's, when I assume my ancestors immigrated to America.

Does anybody know of any good resources for that era?  If I do find the parents of Franklin S Hughes (I think his middle name was Solomon), I would like to be prepared.

    Thanks so much!

    Lisa A. Hughes

  • Richard Patrick Crowe

Hi Lisa...  There is some information on Franklin S. HUGHES on ancestry.com in the Forrester and the Hughesstraub family trees.

If you are not an ancestry.com member, I will download any information I can from that site for you...

  • Lisa A Hughes

Richard, that is actually my  family tree on Ancestry.  My father, Richard Hughes, married my mother, Janet Straube.  I have searched and searched for more information on Franklin S. Hughes and have nothing.  Next weekend I am making a trip to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to search through documents.... I hope to find something.

    Thank you for your reply!

Susan, I did purchase the DNA test for my brother. We are expecting the results the first week of May. Hopefully it will tell us something!
    Thank you!
  • Richard Patrick Crowe

The DNA studies are wonderful!  I am enrolled in the CROW/CROWE DNA study and learned that my family had settled in the Spartanburg, SC, area during the late 1700's.

Another DNA study which a cousin has joined proved that I have a Scottish nobleman, Alexander Irvine, 10th Laird of Drum, in my tree and from Alexander, I can find links to Scottish and English nobility including several persons of royal blood, including David The Bruce of Scotland.

I'd recommend DNA for anyone seriously interested in their family lines...

  • GALE GENTILE (NEE BREADMORE)

    Hello Everyone

I am new to this list therefore this is my 1st post and hope someone can help me wirh the following:

According to the military records of my Great Grandfather Charles Henry Breadmore it states the following

he was in the Army of England

he was born Birmingham England 1862

he married Ann Murphy January 10, 1884 in Ballymodun (nothing else as to where Ballymodun is) I do know Ann of Annie as other records indicate was born in Ireland Abt. 1863.

    My questions are

Where is Ballymodun? Is it possible to get marriage records from there? If anyone has any other info about Annie and Charles' marriage or info a regarding Annie's parents or siblings it would be very much apprieciated.

    Thank you in advance
