My family history indicates that we are descended from Jefferson Davis' sister Mary Ann Davis, who married Robert Davis.

I did a little research on the Internet and it only shows a sister Mary Ellen (who was married to Robert Davis) but they only show two children, not my ancestor Amanda Jane Davis.

I think there is something to this, Mary Ann can be confused with Mary Ellen, and Jefferson Davis had another sister named Amanda Jane.

Does anyone have any idea why this missing daughter might have been skipped in the history, or can they come up with another solution to the mystery for me??

Thanks, glad to be on board, whether we are descended from Jefferson Davis' sister or not ...

My mother is a Davis. Her grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather worked at the New York Evening Post. They were Robert Davis, George Williams Davis and Robert Davis. Her great-great-grandfather, Robert Davis, was an editor and had begun working for the NYEP when he was a boy.

The family is from New York, with a bit of time spent in New Jersey.

Does anyone have any relation to these Davis'?

Deirdre, who are the wives of your Robert Davis (both). I have a Robert Davis who was married to a Mary Ann or Mary Ellen Davis. There may be a Jefferson Davis connection. Sorry, I don't have the states or dates ...
  • Deirdre Piccini

Carole, one of the Roberts (b. 1888) was married to Louise Vida Faber. Then George Williams (b. 1863) was married to Augusta. The other Robert (possibly b. abt. 1840s), I'm not sure who he was married to. Do you have names of any of their children? Robert and George Williams are family names, carried through 3 or 4 generations. I've been told that, going much further back, one of the Davis' was bookkeeper to George Washington in Virginia.

Looks like we're both stuck LOL

My Robert Davis was married to either Mary Ann or Mary Ellen and had a daughter Amanda Jane Davis. See my post below for more details :-)

Hello everyone! I am so glad to have found this site. I have been beating my head against a brick wall for quite some time trying to find a Sophia Davis, who was born around 1812 in Indiana. She is my great great grandmother. She married Eli Roberts in 1832 in Knox, IL. They lived in Schuyler County, IL until sometime between 1870 and 1880 where they then show up in Ravenna Town, Fannin County, Texas. Prior to having married Eli, I have found NO history on either Sophia or Eli.

  • JudithE.Davis

Hey Jefferson Davis fans... I too think my late husband was also related to JD. I've seen an early picture of him and a picture of my husband were the spitin image.

So anyway I bought a book "Jefferson Davis by: William J. Cooper, Jr. and on page three there is a letter from JD to his sister Amanda. He's addressing their fathers death. Amandawas married to: David Bradford and they had two childrennamely, Benjamin and David. I'm sure there are more answers to your question in there but I haven't read it all yet. So go look in the Library or go buy it I'm sure it'll help.

    Christine,

I have been able to locate a Pamela Davis 1821 Ohio - 1901 Syracuse, Kosciusko Co., Indiana. Interred at Syracuse Cemetery (Find a Grave #36988754).

Her husband was Nathaniel Davis 1826 - 1888. He is interred next to her, along with their daughter Amanda Davis 1849 - 1872.

There is a listing of other children for them.  Amanda, Pamela, Nathaniel (Jr. ?), Lida, and Malen at Find a Grave.

I guess thery are all interred there together. I'll check my genealogy list to see if I have any connections to them.

    Hope this helps a bit.

Davis, b. 1811, supposedly in Philadelphia.  She married Paul Conard of Chester County.  Most likely he was a Quaker, but I have no information on Ann's religion.  When Ann was widowed she lived with a niece in Camden, NJ (1890's).

Just new here, and I see that there hasn't been a comment in awhile, but thought I'd just "jump in"!

Having problems (of course) with Davis line.

David Davis (1687 - 1770) is my 5th great grandfather.

His son, Charles Davis (1736 - 1807) is my 4th great grandfather.

His son, Isaac Louis Davis (1766 - 1847) was 3rd great grandfather.

His son, Louis Davis (1802-1859) was 2nd great grandfather.
His daughter, Minerva T. Davis (1843 - 1888) was my great grandmother.
  • Helen Sharpe Ackley

Sorry!  Added too soon.  Most of my problem is from David Davis back.  If any one can help me out I'd really appreciate it!  David was in Maryland, Charles started in MD, moved to VA.  Isaac ended up in KY, and that's where they stayed until my grandmother moved to Kansas after her marriage.

Looking for Davis in Wayne County West Virginia

I have been looking for information on my great grandfather was William Shockley Davis.  I am trying to find out who his parents were. There are a couple of possibilities so I thought I would see if anyone has any info on them. James & Mary with a brother Anderson on the 1870 Census or could be William & Sarah on the 1880 census, these are all Stonewall Dist. of Wayne County, West Virginia. Silas & Elloreen in Reedy, Roane, West Virginia on the 1880 census are the third possibility.  I think it’s James & Mary but not sure.

I know he was born in Wayne County according to his Sept. 1909 marriage license to my great grandmother Dollie Skeens. I can find him on the 1900 census married to a Mary living with their 3 children and his brother in law Sylvester Ramey.  Mary died in Feb. 1907 they were married in Oct. 1896.

On the 1910 census he was with my g-grandmother with his children from his previous marriage and children they had and one she had from a previous marriage. I found a death certificate, for him and he died in June 1914. His death is listed twice once on the 11th reported by Doliver Davis and once on the 12th by Dr. O.T. Hines.

He was born between 1866 and 1870 from the dates on those documents.  I have not found a birth record for him.  I don’t know where he is buried and I haven’t found a obit for him. Wayne County News has then that go back that far but you have to go into the office or the library, and I live in Texas so I can’t make it there to check.

Any and all help would be appreciated.
