My great uncle Henry A. Wipfler died in Germany.

I wonder if he fought against relatives and never knew them.

This is the only picture I've ever seen of him.

On July 12, 1973, a disastrous fire at NPRC (MPR) destroyed approximately 16-18 million Official Military Personnel Files. The affected record collections are described below.

Army: Personal discharged from Nov. 1,1912, to Jan. 1,1960   80% distroyed

Air Force: Personal discharged from Sept. 25,1947 to Jan. 1,1964 75% distroyed

Records can be obtained from NARA (National Archives and Records Administration)

There's no guarantee that any records you send for will be found.

For WW1 you will need standard form 180.

    Available at:

    http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/standard-...

Make sure you fill the form out as much as you can. The more info you can provide the easier and quicker it makes it to find. Again if the record still exists.

You can download the form or apply online/ Which ever is better for you.

I hope this helps everyone to locate their relatives records

If you have a soldier from the US who fought in WW1 you might look for a group of books called "Soldiers of the Great War"

These books are no longer printed so your local library may have them or can get them thru inter library loans.

The books list by states soldiers who enlisted. What branch of the service, rank,if they lived or died. And if they died how.

In some cases there are pictures of whole companies.

I was lucky enough to find my gr uncle listed and how he died. This gave me info which led to the info I now have.
