Carolyn: Did you back up the images when you backed up your family tree file. If you did back up the images you have to unzip them and put them in the exact same folder on his computer. That way Legacy can find those images. That is the main reason Legacy installs on your C drive and not in the program folder. When he opens the zip file for the images it will show him the path to them so he will have to put them in the same place. If by chance you have put all your pictures in your documents folder he will have to reattach every image to the file on his computer as the paths will not be the same. HINT: On my computers I created a folder called Legacy Images on my C: drive and store all my images there. so no matter what computer I put my tree on all I need do is copy that folder and the images are in my tree when I open it. If you put the images where Legacy wants you to in its program folder then if your husband puts them in the same place the program will find them. Hope this helps.
I am pretty sure that I have put the wrong parents to my 3rd Gt Grandfather. I need to unlink him to them and to his grandparents and also his siblings. How do I do it so that he stays where he is along with all his descendants, so that I can add another parent to him
Hi Carolyn. In the Legacy help menu, it has instructions for unlinking a child from parents and siblings, but keeping his/her spouse and descendants.
Unlinking a Child from Parents
When you choose to unlink an individual from their parents, you are telling Legacy to break the tie that exists between that person and their parents and their siblings (if any). Unlinking a person does not delete the individual from the family file. It simply disconnects him or her from having a child relationship with the current parents, and a brother-sister relationship with any siblings. The person would still remain linked to his or her spouse(s) and children.
Hi Pamela, that is exactly what I wanted. I was a bit unsure whether to unlink the parents from him or unlink him from his parents. I did have a look at the help but still was unsure.
I maintain my genealogy database using Legacy on my desktop, but use TNG online.
On 12th October, I uploaded a new GEDCOM to TNG with 167896 individuals and 70351 families.
Since then, I have added around 100 individuals to the Legacy database, but noticed last night the file now has just 165803 individuals and 69780 families.
I have not deleted any files, though I have merged two.
Is there a way I can identify the additions since 12th October and then add them back in to the GEDCOM?
I just upgraded to Legacy 8 and I love it so far! I am running into a little snag, though -- the keyboard shortcuts listed on the back of the Legacy 8 book (like NS to add a new son, or EW to edit wife, etc.) do not seem to be working. Do I need to enable those somehow? It's late and I'm tired, so it's entirely possible I'm missing something obvious... :) Help, please?
Carolyn - You should not lose anything other than the Deluxe feature. Legacy 8 is installed in a separate directory path, so you'll still have full access to Legacy 7 after installing Legacy 8 (Standard or Deluxe). Once you have Legacy 8 up and running, you will have to manually customize it to match what you currently have in Legacy 7, interface color, menus, ... etc ...
RayDean-Hill - The book yo which you refer is, I guess, Geoff's, published some time before the release of V8.0. To the best of my knowledge this feature has not yet been implemented.
Ron, thank you for your input. The book is the "Legacy 8.0 Family Tree" user manual for the software, published by Millennia. I got it in July when I paid for version 8 at a conference. So I would imagine those keyboard shortcuts listed on the back of the book should be available, especially since it's a feature that was in Legacy 7.5. I'm still feeling puzzled... :/
RayDean Hill - As I do not work for Millennia I am not familiar with the details. Whilst I have no doubt that the details in the book were published in good faith, it is my understanding that changes made necessary by the implementation of improvements and enhancements did lead to the removal of some functions previously available in V7.5.
I cannot say whether or not this applies to the change in key shortcuts to which you refer.
With Legacy 7, when I printed out a report, it would add compiler information at the bottom of each page in small print. I can not find in Legacy 8, deluxe, how to have compilare information to be added on reports. Anyone out there know how to turn on this option? Thanks.
Phillip H. Pitzer: I have only looked at the Descendant Book Report, but usually it will be the same for all. On the right hand side of the Report Options page there is a box "Page Set up.....", click and select "Footers"
Lewis, I've tried Legacy 7.5 using Wine on my Debian system. It runs--mostly. I have not been able to get Legacy to recognize any of my CUPS printers, so Legacy then refuses to generate any reports and crashes. There are other issues with Internet access via Legacy. I don't really recommend it, but your mileage may differ. Legacy 8 starts, but I don't see any data so it's currently unusable.
Just installed V8 and have issue with "Potential Problems" feature. I have someone who died 21 Sep 1993 and put buried on 24 Sep 1993. In events I show "Eulogy" and "funeral home" and used the 24 Sep 1993 date. It is coming up potential problem with "event date out of range" When I click on it to clear the problem the box shows "There were no problems found" and nothing is listed in the box???? Am I missing something or is this a glitch? Anybody else with this problem and does anyone know how to fix this?
There is supposed to be an option within Legacy using an ugrade link on the home page to do this. However, my version 7.5.0.278 says I have the latest build and does not offer the upgrade offer. I followed the download route.
However, what has really upset me is that all surnames have been capitalised. No longer can I differentiate between Macdonald and MacDonald, or McLean and Mclean.
I have just realised that my Backup family file has not been working for a while. When I click backup it does nothing. I need to sort this out quick in case my computer packs up.
Can anyone help me. I am still working with 7 de luxe
Further to my last post, I have updated to Legacy 8 de luxe and am in even worse problems. When I try to convert the files I first get an error 48 and if I try again I get an error 3191. I am at my wits end...I cannot access any of my trees not on 8 or 7.It asks me to repair the file but I cannot access the file to repair it. Is there anyone who can help me
I Upgraded to 8 from 7.5. I'm finding out that I should have ordered the training video. Its like having to learn all over gain, even though a lot of features remain, the User Interface is radically different, and takes getting used to.
When you said your backup did not work on Legacy 7.5 did you do a file maintenance on your tree as it could be a database problem causing your problem.
William- my surnames did not get capitalized when I updated to Legacy 8. You may be able to change this by clicking on options tab, then customize and choose option 3, Data Format. 3.3 deals with surnames. Hope this helps you.
Carolyn... When you upgraded, di you install Legacy 8 in the same directory as Legacy 7 was in? If so, 8 automatically "converts" the old files to the legacy 8 format. This could be the cause of 7 giving you an error message when you try to open it, because the files no longer mach... Just a thought.
I have legacy 8 deluxe. On my laptop the family view page is the right size but on my desktop the boxes and writing are too big, yet they say the same when I look at the settings.
How do I make them smaller so that everything fits in.
Back in Oct I started prep. for L#& -Ran a Potential Prob. Report and due to extended illness am just getting back to this (3/2014) and finished all the correction - went to run a new report, but got the same OLD one. I can see all the changes I made in the family files what why not an up to day Pot. Prob. Rpt??. What did I do wrong. Help!
Since yesterday the familysearch integration feature has not been working for me. Also yesterday I installed the latest update to ver. 8. Not sure if the problem began before or after the update install. Help please.

After much work (with the help of a co-worker), I was able to install ver.8. I noticed that from ver 7.0, I have an incon for Legacy Charting 7. Do I still use that or is there one for ver.8? What also made it hard for me was that I needed a new computer so I went from Vista to Win. 7.
Thank you for your help. I do have the new icon for 8, but I still have an old icon for Legacy Charting 7 plus the Icon for ver. 7. Do you still use the Charting 7?

I would still be related to her children. They would be my half ancestors (is there such a thing). What I found interesting was that her son was blind as my son is. Another thing is that in Ancestry I found someone's family tree that had her daughter as there daughter. I found the baptism certifcate saying that my ancestor was the mother. How do you deal with that?
I have the almost the same situation in my tree. Several of my cousins children have had children out of wedlock with different partners, none of whom they have actually married and I am always at a loss how to record the children and the relationship of their parents. Any other people besides Margi and I dealing with similar problems.
I have encountered much the same problem with several people. I just enter the parents on the marriage screen with the note that they never married. Often, the children were never adopted by later step parents, but the surname does not change with additional spouses of the custodial parent.
