I am trying to find anything on my great grandfather "Albert Ring" from Cork, Ireland.
  • Linda Lowry Pugh

I am looking for any information about my g-g-grandparents, John Haney (d. 1878 Lexington, KY) and Jane kane (d. 1885 Lexington, KY). I have no idea if my ancestors immigrated before or after marriage, or even what year they arrived on US soil. Their son, James A. Haney, was born here in Kentucky in 1863. The only thing I know for sure, is that my father was certain his ancestors came from "County Cork, Ireland".
  • Annette

Ggrandfather Patrick Ready was supposedly from Cty Cork. I've been told the name is usually spelled REIDY in Ireland, although variations like REDDY, REIDY, and REID, are used as another name for red or someone who has a ruddy complexion. Confusing is that there are other names, even like Flynn, that in early Gaelic, mean red or a ruddy complexion. I'm wondering where in Cty Cork these names might be found.

Hi to all those of you interested in your cork relations around 1900

    If you go to http://www.corkpastandpresent.ie/
they have great maps of the whole of the city of cork
of that time which show accurate sized floor plans of every business
and private dwellings there rooms, closets etc even the angle of pitch
of the roof (if you need that) so you can see how you ancestors
lived, you will find the streets and houses that have been demolished
in the modernization (improvements) I've learnt a great deal from them.

    Hi help needed

My mothers' side of the family (Mullaney + Brookes) were all born and raised in cork, and I am interested in the streets they lived in, 33 Maylor Street, 28 Harpurs lane and 25 Paul street. these houses and even Harpurs lane have gone been "improved"
If anybody has any old photos 1880-1920 of these streets or better still showing parts of the house numbers given they would be most appreciated.

Anyone know where to get transportation records for Cork residents? I had a few bad boys (and girls) in my family, and once they were transported, they vanish.
  • Barbara Walsh

Shawn - as I understand it, there aren't any records in Ireland for those that emigrated. The records would be in the "arrival" country. Don't know about those that were sentenced to be "transported out".
I have Collins' from Cork in my family tree. There were from around Baltimore in southwest County Cork.
  • Martha Murphy

I have an ancestor, Patrick O'Connor who was supposed to have come from County Cork. I'm having problems trying to trace records of his citizenship in the USA. I don't know where he came into, when he came to the USA, etc. No family has been able to find his marriage certificate either, but we do know where he got married and lived. Georgia and Alabama. Any ideas?

Hi my great grandmother was from Co. Cork. with the little info I have on her it makes it very difficult to search. Her name was Ellen Harrington born around1869 emmigrated to U.S. when she was 16 married Edmond Lawlor when she was 18. Her father was Michael F. mother unknown could possibly be named Agnes? You see with such common Irish names it's very difficult. She had two known brothers and two sisters in the U.S.
with her. Her two sisters were Mrs. Patrick Sullivan and Mrs Patrick Harrington first names unknown. One of her brothers died in a New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad accident around 1906/07. She attended school in Ireland until about the eighth grade. I known very little about her life in Ireland most of what I have is on her life in Malden Mass after she arrived here. Any info on trying to trace her in Co. Cork would be a big help. Thanks Karen Worth-Carter

Cahalane, Callahan, Donovan and Schull area/Long Island, Schull
Looking for any info on families of Long Island, Schull. My gr-grandmother, Ellen Callaghan, born 1876, daughter of Denis and Catherine (Donovan) Callaghan, married Jeremiah Connolly of Goleen area about 1899. I don't Catherine (Donovan) Callaghan's parents or siblings, though 1901 census shows Donovan families on Long Island and other Schull area islands. Denis (O') Callaghan was born about 1839, (no location), son of Denis and Ellen (Cahalane/Cahelin/Cahelane). Griffith's Valuation (1848-1864) shows only a few Cahalanes near Schull: a Patrick of East and a Patrick of West Ballybane. Also Cahalanes in Durrus area. Any help appreciated.

I have started putting my research notes into Shared Tree, as there are many more records in the notes with no obvious relationship to my family than I have actual family records.

  • Kathleen Daetsch

I am looking for a County Cork connection to my 4th great-grandfather, Jeremiah O'Bryon, he was born abt 1757 according to his grave stone he immigrated to New York probably just after the American revolution. The first record of him being in New York isfrom The Kaatsban Church Records Vol. lll Kingston Library, Kingston,NY, it is the record of Jeremiah and his wife Margaret McDarmey christening thier daughter Margaret in 1786. Family lore, which I know is not always reliable, says he came from Co. Cork .
  • Debby Mil

I am interested in hearing from anyone related to the Cork Thompsons or Connells. I have traced my ancestors back to Cork in the mid 1800s. The earliest marriage I have is Nicholas Thompson to Mary Connell. Most of their children were born in Ballyclough.

They spread around in that same area. I am aggregating data at Shared Tree.

Does anybody have Cahalane ancestry from the Skibb area? If so, I'm looking for a Bridget (Biddy) Cahalane, married to Michael Hurley of Coolnagrane, had sons:

    John, bap. 23-Feb-1839, d. 1-Apr-1908 (my great-grandfather)
Patrick, bap. 2-Mar-1841 (not positive about this one)
    Daniel, bap. 31-May-1843
    Michael, bap. 15-Jan-1849

My family doesn't know anything about Bridget. I am guessing she came out of Kilmacabea civil parish. If you know anything about Skibbereen Cahalanes please let me know!

I would really appreciate some help if possible. I have been doing research on my own for about 8 months now. I am looking to find the place of birth for my husbands great grandfather. I have quite a bit of info but have hit a wall with the location. This is the info I already have:
    Great Grandad:
Patrick J. Sullivan DOB 2/27/1861 Co. Cork
He arrived in Boston on 5/1/1883. The only ship I can find out of Ireland, Queenstown, that year to Boston is the Catalonia which stopped in Liverpool as well.
He was Naturalized 9/6/1890. He married Annie Mulcahey in 1895 and died in Portland Maine October of 1899.
His parents were Jeremiah Sullivan and Margaret Sullivan. I know this is a lot to ask for help but I am at a dead end and would REALLY love to get this done for my husband and his family. Please feel free to email me if you have any ideas or help.
    Thanks a Ton!!!!

Does anybody have Barnane in their family tree? That is a very West Cork name. It may be anglicized as Bernard.

Johanna Barnane married Humphrey Collins of Lissane, Caheragh 15-Feb-1820 in the old chapel in Drinagh. We think Johanna and Humphrey are my gg-grandfather Michael's parents - the problem is we cannot find a baptismal record for Michael. From a death record we think he was born 1822. Johanna's and Humphrey's children were baptized in Caheragh: Catherine 2-Dec-1820; John 18-May-1824; Honora "Norry" 17-Dec-1829; James 7-Aug-1833; Jeremiah 7-Dec-1835. The only marriage/baptismal witness of relevance is a Mary Barnet/Barnane.

Besides the son Michael we think that Humphrey also had a brother Michael and that Johanna Barnane was a baptimal sponsor to his son James, 1-Feb-1829.

It is possible that Johanna died and Humphrey remarried and had more children with a Mary Brien.

I am aware of a few Barnanes in the Drinagh tithe applotment. After that, the trail grows cold as I haven't yet looked around in Dunmanway, Clonakilty, etc.

Is anybody connected to Michael Driscoll and Johanna Collins of Currabeg, Castlehaven?

Looking for their marriage. So far I have been unsuccessful with PILOT.

Daughter Hanora was born 20-Oct-1890. In the 1901 census Michael in Currabeg (Castlehaven North DED) he is a widower. Nora is missing (I think I know where she was). The oldest child listed in 1901 is Helena, age 19. The youngest is 6. That would put the family years around 1882-1895.

I searched http://irishgenealogy.ie and found a son older than Helena, Jeremiah, baptized 16-Sep-1880.

I've tried searching PILOT with reasonable variants of Johanna as well as Honora: Hanora, Hannah, Ann, Joan. There are an Honora Collins and a Michael Driscoll listed in Dunmanway in 1878 but they weren't married to each other. Argggh!

Does anybody know if any County Cork coroner inquest papers survived the 1922 fire and are archived someplace? I am interested in a drowning that occurred in Lissane, near Drimoleague, in February 1903. The death record says the coroner was R. Neville. The Southern Star news archives do not mention this particular drowning, though R. Neville (I think he was Richard Neville) was the coroner for another drowning in Ballineen that occurred around the same time. I have already googled, and have not found anything at NAI that mentions Cork inquests specifically. The email I sent an inquiry to at corkarchives.ie archivist@corkcity.ie bounced. I am now trying cork.heritage@corkcoco.ie but if anybody knows anything about coroner records I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Looking for the marriage of Daniel Mahony and Maryanne McCarthy, about 1898.  They were in Gurranes North, in the DED of Dromdaleague North in the 1901 and 1911 censuses.  The latter census says they were married 13 years and they had six children, all living.  In 1901 the oldest child was less than a year old.

So far I have not been successful looking at civil reg at http://www.familysearch.org.

Maryanne (who also went by Mary) is listed as the daughter on the death record of an elderly Mary McCarthy whose date of death was 16-May-1918 and which occurred in the same place.

Hello, I am looking for the descendants John Collins and his wife Margaret Collins Collins.  According to their marriage record (16-Feb-1889, Bantry), John's residence was Aghaville. I know quite a bit about Margaret's family, from Colomane East.  Margaret and John are in both censuses in Colomane East with their children John (Jackey), Dina (Diana), and Denis, who may have been called Bob.

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Gurtnascreeny...

I am trying to track down Diana's marriage record now.  She may have had children nicknamed Roggie and Pitchie.  Roggie, the boy, had curly red hair.  My aunt remembers the children from a visit to Colomane East in late 1930, when she herself was seven years old, to visit her dying grandfather Denis Collins.

Hello, I am looking for descendants of Lawrence Collins and his
wife Katherine Collins Collins of Ceancullig.  Lawrence (b. 1907) was from Colomane East and I know quite a bit about his ancestry.  He was one of my Grandmom's younger brothers.  After their father Denis died in late 1930, the Colomane East farm was sold.  Lawrence apparently stayed in Derryduff, possibly working on Nora McCarthy's farm, who was a cousin.  Lawrence's and Kate's marriage date is 21-Apr-1935.  According to the record Kate's residence was Ceancullig (Counkilla) and her father's name was Daniel.  Lawrence went to her father's farm.  I think this is Kate's family in the 1911 census:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Dromdaleague_...

I have some 200+ people in Lawrence Collins' tree.  Grandmom's two other brothers did not have children so I am particularly interested in finding family members descended from her one remaining brother!

Johanna Collins + John Donovan, m.c. 1856, Skibbereen area

Seeking descendants of Johanna Collins, probably from Adrigole, near Skibbereen, and John Donovan of Ardagh, near Rosscarbery.  One son James died 5-Sep-1915, Ardagh.  His obit is in the Southern Star archives.  His siblings include Johanna, bap Oct-1858; Diana or Dinah, bap. 11-Nov-1865; Honora, bap. 10-Jun 1969; Mary or Maria, bap. unknown, Margaret, bap. unknown.

I am researching the family of Johanna Collins.

  • Susan J. Barretta

Diana Collins + Timothy Sullivan, m. 11-Feb-1868, Skibbereen area

Seeking descendants of Diana Collins of Adrigole, near Skibbereen.  Her father's name was Lawrence.  She died 1-Jun-1892, believed to have been born about 1838.  Timothy Sullivan was from Clooncugger.  Known children include Mary, b. 18-Apr-1869; John, b. 22-Jan-1871; Bridget, b. 27-Sep-1872.

I am researching the family of Diana Collins.  She may have had a brother Jeremiah. There is a Jeremiah Collins who witnessed the marriage and there is a Jeremiah in the online church records, bap 20-Dec-1846, son of a Lawrence Collins + Catherine Neil.

I now have the following tithe applotment transcriptions online:  Abbeystrowry, Aghadown, Caheragh, Drinagh, Drimoleague, Fanlobbus, Kilfaughnabeg, and Kilmacabea.

    http://www.corkgen.org/publicgenealogy/cork/titheapplot/

Skibbereen Heritage has been doing some amazing work for me piecing together my family history.  Right now I am gaining insights into who my 3g and 4g-grandparents were from their research.  This goes way beyond the realm of what my mother and her siblings knew (they were from the area).

When you put together enough data from censuses and civil registration BMD data you can sometimes make some lucky educated guesses.  Some BMD data is available for rent from local Mormon family history libraries.  In this area there is also the regional advantage of a local newspaper with archives (though it only goes back to 1892).

Skibb Heritage has also done many tithe applotment transcriptions and is looking for the resources to put them online later this year.  The donation fee can vary but they will scour what they have to find marriage records and baptismals of all children in a family and also let you know about families they think are closely related.  But they do need some specifics (e.g., from census and BMD.  I encourage you to support their efforts.

  • Carolyn Casperson

Susan--Since I'll be in Ireland next month, I wonder about getting a head start at the Skibbereen Heritage Centre.  How and with whom did you make contact?
  • Susan J. Barretta

Carolyn email them at their link:  http://www.skibbheritage.com/

The name of the recent researcher I have worked with is William Casey, though they may have others.  It wouldn't surprise me if they had a few extras to handle the summer tourist season.

  • Carolyn Casperson

Susan--thank you for the speedy reply.  I'll let you know what they find out.

  • Murfy

    Dia Diut,

My maternal Irish family is of the Dunmanway, Cork area which I have been researching  since 1996.  With the help of extended family members, here in the US and in Ireland, our research has lead us to much success in locating our passed ancestors and newly aquainted cousins.

Although the names in the family have extended to many, Murphy, Dullea and Regan are my main family names.

Good luck to all who are researching Cork.

    Slan lait,

    Murphy
