Do you have ancestors from Ontario, Canada West or Upper Canada? These are all the province of Ontario in Canada. This group is for those interested in the history and genealogy of Ontario.
If anyone is doing research in Wentworth, Ontario, Canada...I just started a new site to list all the links/information I can find about this area. There is a forum if you want to chat as well. I just started it, so need to add lots more...but check it out if you want. http://familyhistoryfun.webs.com
@Janice Schultz, my ancestor Samuel LALONDE b. Qc settled in Walsingham, Norfolk Co., Ont. and married Margaret SMITH. I am stuck on both, the line I can get back least on.
James, I descend from Alexander Lalone who was born in Hastings, Ontario on 12 September 1866. He immigrated to Michigan with his parents William Lalone and Margaret Knight.
@Janice Schultz,
Looking on WorldConnect there are a couple of people who give William as descended from Joseph-Andre LALONDE & Catherine MAILLOUX (I do have their genealogy back - as shown on the WorldConnect page but no children listed for them) you might email the poster for documentation. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=nblos...
Sorry I can't be of more help right now.
Hi, Lynne McDonough: I have a Jacob Snyder in my family tree; although I have no information on a spouse or children. My Jacob was born on Feb 5, either 1744 or 1745; and was the son of Johannes Jost Snider (born 06 Jan 1705/06 in Heuttengesass, H-Nassau, Hessen-Nassau, Germany and died 07 Mar 1788 in Beckman Patient, Dutchess, New York, USA) and Anna Magdalena Flagler (born 19 Sep 1712 in Ulster, Dutchess, New York, USA and died about 07 Mar 1788 in Beekmans Patent, Dutchess, New York, USA). Johannes and Anna were married about 1728 in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, New York, USA. They had about 14 children together.
I have another Jacob Snyder (born about 1810) who married Magdalena Pickard (born 18 May 1806 in Minden, Montgomery, NY, USA and died 02 Jan 1848 in Caughdenoy, NY). I'm not sure of this Jacob's parentage at this point.
Would one of these be part of your family tree? If so, I'd like to share what I have with you.
FYI, the Kenora genealogy group has set up a network for those doing genealogical research in that region of NW Ontario. http://askgen.ning.com/ if you have ancestors or are a researcher in that district.

Hello Everyone
I am looking for info on Charles Hamilton Carr, arrived Boston, MA Aug. 10, 1885 with his brother Alexander (my gr grandfather). They were going to Halton/Milton, Ontario. I suspect to meet up with their sister Mary Louise Carr Taylor who had married in Oakville in 1883 to Benjamin Handley Taylor.
I have found info on Alexander and Mary Louise from this time forward, but nothing for Charles. He was 14 and Alexander 16 at the time they arrived in North America.
On Mary Louise's marriage certificate, her witness was Flora Adelaide Carr. Another mystery as I have not found this name since.
Alexander's wife was Annabelle Montgomery, descended from Samuel Alexander Montgomery of Mono, Ontario. I can only hope that Charles was also around the Orangeville, Ontario area and I have just missed him by a few years somehow.
Also, looking for anyone searching the Carr name in Ontario - my ancestors are from Galway, Ireland.
Hey Myo, Welcome!
I would recommend adding a little more information. There are thousands of Campbells across all of Canada. Mine were from the Stormont and Glengarry counties of Ontario.
Bob~
I tried to leave a comment on your wall without success.
I'm wondering if we have a connection. I'm descended from Malcolm Campbell, son of Duncan, who emigrated to Canada c. 1802 from Glenelg, Scotland. Malcolm's farm was very near St. Elmo and Charles Gordon's church.
If that rings any bells, I can look up further details.
Hi Elizabeth, My great-great grandparents are buried in Gordon Church Cemetery, Angus Cameron and Euphemia Begg. I have photos of most of the stones at St. Elmo. I am sure there is a Campbell or two in the set of pictures. Check this page and scroll all the way down to St. Elmo: http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~clifford/Glengarry.htm
Hi All, I've discovered some of my Pencil/Pencille family in the 1851 living in Reach Township. Are there any cemetery records online for this township? Looking for John Pencil, Jr. and/or Fanny (Frances?) Jackson Pencil.
John Pencil, Jr. was about 76 yrs old on this 1851 census so I suspect that he probably died in Reach Township. Thanks.
hello all I am in search of any information on my 3rd great grandfather. I am having some trouble getting some information his name is David Bishop born 1776 in England died in Leeds,Bastard Ontario, Canada in 1859. His son Truman Bishop moved to the United States sometime in the mid 1800's
The Jan/Feb 2011 issue of FAMILY CHRONICLE has articles on US records for War of 1812 (p.21); book review of CRIME AND PUNISHMENT IN UPPER CANADA: A RESEARCHER’S GUIDE, by Janice Nickerson, along with a case study by her (p.29, p. 30); and using (LDS) Family History Centers for research (p. 44), to name a few of the articles.
I just joined this group and at this time I have no brick wall, but I'm available to help. I live in Port Huron, MI and by descent backwards: Detroit> St Clair Co., MI., > Port Perry, Ontario> Kingston, Ontario> New Brunswick/Nova Scotia> Westchester Co., NY. My family moved into NB/NS May 1783 so were loyalist. Gradually each generation moved west and in 1857 ended up back in US ( MI Port Huron). I teach genealogy 101, 102 & 103 with emphasis on Canadian research.
Hi everybody. My relatives are all from Quebec but my parents moved to Sault Ste Marie in 1942 which is where I was born and my father is buried. Now in the US, I look back at the times I visited the Soo Locks and remember hearing about the fur-traders who crossed over in their canoes, then, visiting the US to St-Ignace, Mackinaw Island and all the historical locations. It all means so much more to me today.Nice to hear voices from Ontario. Also love Lorine's website Olivetreegenealogy.com. Thanks for all the warm fuzzies Lorine.
What is best way to start in Ontario? Know grandfather
Ernest James Fitzpatrick was born in Toronto
3 march 1889 and parents were Frederick Fitzpatrick and frances Pelham but have been able to find any records of such.
Dates and names are from death certificate, naturalization papers and military discharge papers in my possession.
Sue, if your ancestor was in Ontario then you should be able to find him in census - 1891 for example. Or at least find his parents (1881, 1891 etc)
His birth might be registered, it was the law but many did not bother. Especially the Catholics, they tended often to just baptise in a church and not bother with civil registration
Have you gone to Ancestry? They have all the Ontario records
Sue, I've had a look at what Ancestry might have for your grandfather, and the results are not encouraging I'm afraid.
No birth registration appears for Ernest James Fitzpatrick. I attempted the searches several ways. Only one Fitzpatrick was registered as being born in York Co during all of 1889, and that was a Thomas Henry Fitzpatrick, born in April.
A search based on solely a match to either/both parents' names (regardless of the newborn's name), still produced no results. (Such a search can sometimes work-around mistranscriptions of the original record.)
I also had a look at the 1891 census returns for Toronto. The youngest Fitzpatrick listed in the 1891 census out of Toronto was a 5 year old girl. Of the total of 36 people named Fitzpatrick listed in Toronto in the 1891 census, no one had any of the names Fred/Frederick, Frances, or Ernest. One James appears, but he is a married adult, born in England.
It remains possible that some mis-transcriptions are obscuring information on your family in this time period, however the fact that neither birth registrations nor the 1891 census gives any hint of them, seems discouraging.
I'm sorry I wasn't able to locate something for you this evening.
There is a Tree on Ancestry with this family. It looks like the person who put the tree up might be Sue who posted here. But the disturbing thing is that on this tree the son is shown as being born 1889 (all details as Sue has posted here) with the father born 1890! The mom Frances is shown on the tree as 1896. Each has exact dates of birth and parents' names. Now of course that is impossible for the son to be born 1 year before the dad.... So not sure what's mixed up!
I looked at the 1901 and 1911 Ontario census through Automated Genealogy and could not find. If Frederick was now born 1890 he would not be head of household for 1901 or 1911 census.
Debby W., Not only do I have brack walls but I am also geographically helpless!. I live in NJ and even with Ontario Locator I am having difficulties tracking my Pencil/Pencille family.
John Pencil, Sr was a Butler's Ranger who did not accept a land grant in Niagara but accepted one in Fredericksburg because his wife's family also had grants there. Besides his wife's kids from a previous marriage, John & Eva Pencil had 1 child, John Pencil, Jr. of North Fredericksburg who married Fanny Jackson of Richmond circa 1810-1816 (all this according to their own land petitions). John Pencil, Jr was nominated as a constable in Richmond c1809 & served in the Lennox/Addington militia until around 1830. They had several chidlren - some of whom remained in the Lennox/Addington/Frontenac/Kingston area.
Their younger children, however, stated that they were born in Waterloo. Orrin Pencil stated not only was he born in Waterloo but that his parents lived & died on the farm there. John Pencil III also stated that he was born in Waterloo but was living in Reach Twp. when he married a woman from Whitby. I found an elderly John Pencil living in Reach Twp. on the 1861 census with a younger wife as Mrs. Pencil. I assume this John is John, Jr. originally from Lennox & Add. who may have remarried. There are other suspected children James & William found in Whitby.
With the changing boundaries of several locations in that western part of Ontario, I have become entirely confused as to where to search for any records for this family. The original John, Sr. was listed as Church of England for religion. I suspect John, Jr & Fanny were involved with the early Methodist movement as most of their suspected children are listed E.M. or Wesleyan. The 1861 Reach Twp. John Pencil is listed as Adventist which was also the religion of John III according to his marriage record on Ancestry. Another suspected child Sara Timmerman was baptized into the Wesleyan faith when she was an adult. She was living in Flamborough Twp. Waterdown Village at the time c1844.
Given this geographic mess, who/what library/historical society should I be contacting for the younger children who moved towards the west?
There certainly are a number of Shavers in Dundas and Stormont Counties. I have a few of them in my family tree - mostly from Finch Twp., Stormont County.
someone had a question about Border Crossing MI>< Ontario and it was regarding Robert Fields. I have his marriage record to Normandy Morse Nov 21, 1872 Macomb Co., MI plus see him in 1880 census in Richmond MI. In 1900 census now Laura born Nov 1856 and 27yrs married is with son Edward born Feb 1876 and his wife Stella.
I am new to GenealogyWise, and this group immediately caught my interest. My Millman and Parker ancestors emigrated from Holsworthy, Devon, England to Elgin County, Ontario. When I was a child, we used to visit my great great aunt every summer. Someday I'd like to make a return visit to do onsite research and fill in some of my holes.
I'm researching the Pattersons in Ontario.Pehlam, Monck,Thorold, Welland County. Hugh Patterson (1825-1897) Margaret McCullum (???) Robert Patterson (1858-1943) Nellie Corman Patterson (????) John Corman Patterson (1903-1949) Gladys M. Saul Patterson (1908-1983) If these names are in your tree, give me a shout.
Anyone using the Library & Archives Canada (LAC) website for their research knows how precious a resource it is. What you may not know, however, is that massive budget cutbacks and a recent change in management policy are threatening the preservation of this institution.
The Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) has just launched an awareness campaing about what is really going on at LAC and the very serious implication this will have on the future of the preservation of Canada's cultural heritage.
My Park line, and my Joslin/Joslyn line are both from Ontario. The Joslyns came from the US as UEL into New Brunswick and the Park's came from Scotland - both then into Ontario. I have found my Joslins in Oxford Co and the Park line in Oxford Co. and in city of Hamilton. The Joslins (all large Families) then shifted into Michigan. Some Joslins moved west to Manitoba and Saskatchewan as did my direct Park line.
If you think you may be connected, please contact me.
