The Clewell family was a prominent Moravian family in Bethlehem, PA I stayed in Clewell Hall at Moravian College and my math teacher was Prof. Clewell. The Central Moravian Church probably has records.

My Martin and Page families run deep in Pennsylvania. They were the Natives who inhabited the Great Valley (now the Delaware Valley). They resided around the Pequea Valley (now in Lancaster County), and Octorara. The Natives intermarried with White Indian Traders who resided in the area, and with African Americans. They became the Tri-Racial Isolates in the Region Known as the Welsh Mountains.

Although I now reside in California relatives continue to live throughout Pennsylvania.

Hi, everyone - I'm looking for information on decendants of MICHAEL NALLY (b: 1865-1896) in County Mayo, Ireland. He settled in Pittsburgh. Am also looking for descendants of his niece
BRIDGET "DELIA" NALLY LAVERY (b. abt. 1886 in County Mayo, Ireland; d: 1930 in Philadelphia). Several of the Lavery girls married names are WALZ and STRAIN. I think I've exhausted everything Ancestry has on line as well as WorldVital Records and ObitArchive. Can anyone point me in a new direction? I'd be grateful.

In 1860, my ancestor Charles Martin worked on the Farm of Obed Bailey in Lancaster County. If there are any Bailey researchers out there, I would like to exchange information.

I am looking for Grasser, Musser from York, PA. My g-grandfather(Frank Graser) came from Germany and my g-grandmother (Mary Musser)was from Hellam, PA. They went down and settled in Frederick, Md. I am interested in finding anything on Frank Grasers family in Germany. Am I on the right group for this?

I am looking for anyone that is in the Adams County, PA area and would be willing to attempt to assist me in research of my Harmon/Bortner line (1790's-1853)
  • Barbara Marie Graser

If you look in ancestry.com and put the name of the Bortner(I put Lewis in born in 1894)you are looking for, you will get a long list for the bortners. I am related to them through Augusta Graser Bortner. Most of the Bortners are buried in Schaefferstown Cemetery in Codorus Township, York County, PA. Most of the Bortners are from York but you will find alot on the ones in Adams County. I wish I could give you more but I deleted most of the Bortners from my tree because they were so far down on my family tree. Rootsweb also has somethings on line. Good luck!
  • Barbara Marie Graser

I forgot, google Lewis Bortner and you will find the line you want. I just did that to find a Bortner and found some.
  • Stephanie Kelly

My Bortner line is my direct line starting with Margaret Bortner (3rd Great Grandmother) who was the daughter of a Micheal Bortner. George Harmon(4th Great Grandfather) b. 7 Jan 1787 buried at Lower Burmudian Cemetery, Adams Co, PA is the main line that I am trying to research is my Harmon line and there is not that much on them. I have an Ancestry.com membership, but it is getting ready to end do to cost. I also am wanting to get the acutal documents not just the extracts or transcriptes.
  • Kate Steere

    Hi Stephanie-
what do you know about George Harmon? He is of the age that would have fought in the War of 181, do you know if he was in the war? Who was he married to and when did he die?

If you'd like to start a discussion that will make it easier to keep track of information that may be found for you-

I was at a meeting today and someone mentioned a site that had archived military records for Pennsylvanians from all wars. I wrote it down, but apparently did not write it correctly. I thought it was www.arias--- Does anyone know what that site might be?
  • Vicki Koller Hartman

Sally...here's what I think you are looking for:
    http://www.digitalarchives.state.pa.us/
  • Sally Nelson

Thanks, Vicki. That is exactly what I was looking for.
  • Lewis Hartswick

I just joined this group (I'm looking for mid 1700s info on Hartswick ) but havent
figured out how the threads work. I see 128 "comments" but only the three
"Discussion Forum" at the top. How do I see the "threads" that spawn the
comments? Thanks. Big question is where will I see the answer to this. :-)

  • Kathleen Elizabeth McKinney

Sally- I've found the site you were thinking of, bless Google. It's http://digitalarchives.state.pa.us/archive.asp. It's the Pennsylvania State Archives or the Archives Records Information Access System (ARIAS).
  • Sally Nelson

Thank you, Kathleen. That is, indeed, the site:) I appreciate the help.
  • Kate Steere

    Hi Lewis-
If you want to post a query, it is easier to 'start a discussion' so you can have the answers connected to your query. The comments aren't really connected unless someone specifically indicates in their comment who they are responding to. :)
  • Charisse Johnson

If anyone comes across any information about the Hickson family I would appreciate it if you passed it along to me. Thanks
  • Robert

I am looking for any descendent of Lambert's who emigrated to Pennsylvania, in particular, Allegheny, Pittsburgh between 1880 - 1883 from Dollar, Clackmannanshire, Scotland. The names are David Law Lambert, John Lambert, Robert Kirk Lambert. I do have census info from 1900,1910 for them. Robert Kirk Lambert married Hannah Wallace Abt. 1886 and had, Robert b: 07 May 1888, Albert: b 14 Aug 1890 and Mabel b: May 1893.
There may also have been a Jane Lambert and a Mary Inglis Lambert that also emigrated but I am not sure on this on.
I would appreciate any information on the above.

how can you get vital records on line for pa. for 1800's dianne
  • lois

Researching in western PA-Mercer, Lawrence,Beaver and Allegheny Counties.
Names researching Butler and Malia(o"Malley) in Allegheny Co.possibly Lawrence Co. AND Shannon and Gillespie in Lawrence Co.
My Cain's and McKain's started in Philadelphia and some ended up w.Pa.
How can I find marriage license in Lawrence Co. not knowing the date/year? Thanks.
  • Ann Gribbins

I am searching for great grandparents John Malloy and Ellen O'Toole in Williamsport, Lycoming County in PA. I got a letter from the Department of Health stating that their is no death certificate that can be found. He is buried in a cemetery with Ellen in Lycoming, PA, I just can't get a death certifcate in this state. Any ideas?
  • Diane Butcher Clemmons

Ann, is there any chance the person was living with someone else in another state when he died? Elderly folks often lived with family members. I found a 98 year old ancestor living with her grandson in WI and she was buried in MO with her husband. Look for others with whom he might have been living and that state would have the death record.
  • Diane Butcher Clemmons

Lois, if you have any hints as to what church they were married in, they may be willing to look back in their records, even if you don't know the date, but do give them a range. Depending on how old the record is, you may be looking for a marriage bond found at the county clerk level.
  • Diane Butcher Clemmons

Dianne, I have used the company "Vital Records" occasionally. They are expensive, but at least they called me and refunded my money when they couldn't find the record. Maybe I just caught the researcher on a good day.
  • Brenda Sack

Ann, maybe the historical society of Lycoming Co will have newspapers microfilmed in which a funeral notice was published. A local funeral home might still have some records on his interment. Good luck.
  • Christine Kay Olsen-Needham

This is for Cynthia Brewer-- Hi! I have Brewer family in Filmore, Pike, Indiana. They are related to my dad's side and the Hedden name. After the Heddens left Pike Co, Indiana, they moved to Johnson Co., Missouri, and sold their land in Filmore to the Brewers, who were married into the family.
  • Kate Tarpey

Would like to find out what happened to five of my father's aunts who emigrated from Charlestown in Co Mayo, Ireland to Philadelphia. Whether they married and had a families or not. Their names were, Mary Owens (b:1878), Catherine Owens(b:1880), Agnes Owens(b:1890), Ellen Owens(b:1894) and (Annie Owens b:1897)
  • Carldine H. (Martin) Van Allen

Ann have you tried to get a probate for him in where he lived? I have a 3rd greatgrandfather that was an early settler and is buried in Adams County Illinois. When I got his probate there was a bill for transporting his corpse from Vernon County Missoui back to Illinois.
  • Ann Gribbins

Diane, B renda and Caridine, I appreciate your suggestions. All I have found out was that they came over from Ireland. I can't even find siblings or children. I contacted Lycoming and they found out where they were buied, dates and locations in the cemetery but nothing else. As far as probate goes, it would help to find out where he died, etc for the requesting of the probate. Thanks again for your help. Ann
  • Carldine H. (Martin) Van Allen

    Ann
There should be a probate where he lived if he had property there. The 3rd greatgrandfather I referred to died in Vernon County, MO but the probate I found was in Adams Co, ILL. I also found a probate for someone who died in ILL but lived in WA and the probate was in WA.
  • Ann Gribbins

Caridine, that is a great idea. Doesn't probate clerks need the county that he owned land in?
  • Carldine H. (Martin) Van Allen

    Ann
Each county has its own probates. What the office is called varies from jusidiction to jurisdiction. If you know what county he lived in and/or had property in you can contact the county courthouse and see what they have available. Also if you have a Family History Library near you, you check their library catalog to see it the relevant records have been microfilmed and if so you can request they be sent to your FHC for a modest amount.
  • Susi (Susan C Jones) Pentico

Ann Gibbons, You didn't state when died so I am not sure what to suggest but I have many ideas depending on when. Certificates were not issued until after I beleive 1912. or near that time. But the church may have records, the cemetery may have records, a relative, the newspaper. If the church did bulletins it may be in a bulletin. Certain religions did that for church family members who had moved away etc.
  • Lisa A. (Thamm) Spegal

I'm not sure how many of you were at Jim's PA Soldier's Orphans Schools chat tonight, but if anyone wants to look up names there is a book " PA Soldiers Orphan Schools" online at :
    http://www.evendon.net/PGHLookups/PaSoldOrphM.htm

It's very interesting reading. And evendon.net has alot of other things available there too, not all Pittsburgh and not all PA even. Check it out, you might get lucky!
  • Bob Mooney-Pa

To further what Lisa said. Pa had schools set up for orphans and children of civil war soldiers. These child's parent had either died during the civil war or had injuries to prevent them from taking care of their child.
This link is to a book online also http://www.archive.org/details/pennsylvaniassol00pauluoft
  • Christine Kay Olsen-Needham

About the Civil War Orphan's schools, were there any in in Illinois? My gg grandma was in an orphanage after her dad died in Andersonville, and mom died shortly after. But it wasn't in PA, it was in Illinois. Do y'all know anything about that?
  • Bob Mooney-Pa

Christine...I did a quick google search and it looks like there were afew in Illinois.
