I'm researching Kryspin (and assorted spellings lol), Koudela, Kuncs, and Konrad. Never thought I'd have so many Ks! Wensel Adolf Kryspin (son of Wensel Kryspin and Maria Konrad) and Anna Koudela (Dau of Peter Koudela and Maria Kuncs) were married in 1894 in Brno. They came to the US in 1895 with 2 children Edward (b. 1890) and Karl (b. 1893). Wensel Adolf's parents were already in Chicago when W.Adolf and Anna married.

Hi I am looking for names and info regarding Galik, Pakan, Amadec, Klc-Mickucviak-these families were from Myjava Slovakia. My Great Grandfather was Samuel Klc-Mickucviak who married Dorothy Pakan, His parents were Klc-Mickucviak but no one knows his first name and Alzbeta Galik. I have severl generations of names but no dates. Other family names are Svatik,Malatinsky, Krc. Any help is appreciated.

my grandma came from prague, czek. her maiden name was HRANKA. all i know about the family is: her name was AGNES her brothers were CYRILL, and JOHN, and sis was JOSEPHINE. she might have had more, because someone stayed behind to tend the "farm" in her hometown. Cyrill lived in Canada, near Niagra Falls.My grandma was born May 5th, approx. 1888. She married William Van Deusen (?) who changed his name to Rice. (my moms parents.) Josephine came to N.Y.C. along with Agnes, and later came John. Josephine married a man by the name of John Zimic. Uncle John never married.

Alison - depending in the time period, it is very likely your Slovak records are in either Hungarian, Latin, or a combination of the two. The FHL website has a good genealogical Hungarian dictionary

I found this site today and hope that it can help me in my research. I am looking for info.on a Croatian family. The surname is Kuzel. According to the census records I have located, between 1920 and 1930, the name changed. In 1920, Michael and Agnes Kusie lived in Unity, PA with children with the same names and birthdates as my aunts and uncles. They moved to Ohio (Trumbull County) and the surname was Kuzel. The Kuzels are Croatian and of the 12 children born to Agnes and Michael, 3 are left and only 1 is able to recall facts and dates, etc.
Recently, I found that there is a large Croatian population in San Pedro, CA, about an hour and a half from where I live. There is even a Croatian Cultural Center that I am going to check out.
This genealogy has become an addiction for me-I love it

I was on Rootsweb a few weeks ago, puzzling how my family was related to another family, and made an interesting discovery that I would like to share with the group. I discovered GOLD-- a gold mine of info. The church registers for many churchs in the Czech republic have been digitized and are on the internet. Of course, you have to subscribe to the site. But I have not had to pay to use it. The website is: http://www.actapublica.eu/ . The one drawback is that you may have to know a little bit of Czech to use it effectively.

Hello, I am helping my pastor find some information on his family. This is all I have but I was hoping someone here might be able to help.

Marie Katharine Totth (or Toth) was born June 15, 1887 in Kobolkuth, Hungary (spelling and accents may be wrong). She was the daughter of Michael Totth born in 1862 in Malaika, Czech Republic and Katherine Zeedek (or Czedek) born in 1874 in Malaika. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Peter

Good news! The 1869 Slovakia census is now on FamilySearch.org. As it states, "This census does not cover all of Slovakia, but only those census records in the regional archives of Bytča, Banská Bystrica, and Nitra," but this will still be helpful to many. I found the Magyar translations available at http://www.iabsi.com/gen/public/CensusMain.htm invaluable. Just wanted to share....

I ran across something that I was not familiar with today--perhaps someone else is familiar with this and can help: While researching a male Slovak line, there appears to be two surnames for the male (PANIK and OMASTA). This was listed both on his marriage record (in NY) and the birth record of a child (back in Slovakia), although it was crossed out in this record. It does not appear that the second surname is that of his mother--in fact, she has the same surname as he does (PANIK). On his baptismal record, it lists his father as "Panik Backorik Pavel" and his mother as "Panik Kristina." Can anyone explain this?

[It appears the father's last name may be "PANIK BACKORIK"? Not all of the males are listed this way--only 2 on a page of about 40 records. Also, it is not a surname of one of the godparents.]

I checked several Slovak/English dictionary and the word "panik" does not appear. "Panika" translates as fear or panic, which makes no sense.
