Several of my ancestors migrated to and through Kentucky on their continued trek westward. Some came from England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland; some first settled in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the Carolinas before moving into Kentucky from the late 1700s to the early 1800s, they floated down the Ohio or made the difficult passage over the Wilderness Road and through the Cumberlnad Gap on the very heels of Daniel Boone and the earliest trailblazers.
Charles William Dean, born in Kentucky May 7, 1843. Son of Obed Dean and Martha van Buren. Obed Dean in Ovington, Campbell county, Kentucky, c. 1825 or earlier. Obed Dean’s father, Thomas Deane was in Kentucky by 1810, coming from New England (Maine, Massachusetts). Thomas Deane’s family lived in Woodford county, Kentucky. Wife Susan Freeman, daughters, Thankfull, Eunice, and Susan; sons, Obed and Robert.
Obed Dean’s family: Wife, Martha van Buren; daughters, Elizabeth and Sarah; sons, Robert Waterman, and Charles William (all born in Kentucky).
William Watson Fowler was born in 1823 in Kentucky. His father, James, came from South Carolina, and died in 1825 in Kentucky. (Probable route to Kentucky - through the Cumberland Gap/Wilderness Road)
Thomas Benjamin Gant was born in 1803 in Nelson county, Kentucky. His father, William, originally came from Horncastle, England. Thomas Benjamin’s daughter, Spicy, was born in Boone county, Kentucky, in 1827. Thomas Benjamin’s wife, Eliza Hathaway, was born in 1807 in Boone county, Kentucky. Her father, James originally came from Wales.
John B. Pillers was born in 1786 at Louisville, Jefferson county, Kentucky. His wife, Margaret Gaston was born in 1787 in Kentucky. The Pillers had come from Virginia’ the Gastons from South Carolina.
Looking for John Cunningham. According to trees I have seen, all unsourced of course :^( , he died in Todd County about 1826. I will be in that area next week and would love to locate the cemetery where he is buried. I have very little info on him other than that he was born in Ireland, maybe in 1755, and married a woman named Jennett or Janet.
On the other side of the tree, additional family names in KY include Hamilton, Wathen, Spalding, Worland, Abell, McAtee, all from the Marion Co. area.
Roberta,
I'm researching my Cunningham family in Kentucky, The earliest ancestor I've found with proof that are connected to my family is James Porter Cunningham from Graves County, KY. I've not been able to determine for certain who his parents were. Several trees I've seen have John (1793, NC - 1860, KY) and Mahala 1796, NC - 1850) [Anderson] Cunningham but no source information. I know the John you've mentioned is not the same as this John, but was hoping there might be a connection between James Porter Cunningham and your John.
Cheryl, I have come across those names in my research, but have been unable as of yet to make a connection. If I do, I will be sure and contact you! I have spent less time on this line as it is on my husband's side, and have really just gotten going on it. Good luck.
My 4th GGF Edward Byerus Walton was one of the early Kentucky settlers. My current research revolves Estill Co. , and my GGM Anna Belle Patton b. 2 Feb, 1875, Estill Co. d. 2 Feb. 1968,Washington, Ok Need to fill out my Patton family side.
I am new to this group and network. I am researching the following names in KY. Lambert-Lucas-Rich-Points-Williams in Kenton and Grant counties. I am looking for help with the Lucas-Williams line in particular. I have quite a bit of information on the Rich family of Kenton, Grant and surrounding counties as well.
I am also researching the following German surnames from Jefferson County: Rueff-Behrle-Bessire-Orth-Hoskins-Wurtele-Hubbuch-Kuhn-Kirn-Herman/Hermann-Haman-Brun.
Also, I am interested in the family of Michael Charles Lanahan and (1)Honorah Blake and (2) Theresa Fromm.

Hey Y'all, how nice to find a KY Genealogy group. I was born Paducah and am a 5th generation Kentuckian. Forced to live up in Yankee land for many years I am loving being back home in my green fields of KY.
My research is McCracken, Graves, Caldwell, Livingston, Washington, Marion, Jefferson Cos. and just about anywhere else I have to look.
I am Registrar for Transylvania Chapter, NSDAR, and would be happy to help central KY people interested in DAR.
Hi yawl,I was born in Tennessee but my maternal lineage is through Allen and Warren Co Ky.My great grandfather was Thomas B Harris b Jan 10,1864-d Feb 10,1948 Allen Co Ky.Mother was Henrietta Dowell according to death cert.Father unknown.
Garretts and Mortons settled in Montgomery and Powell County following the Revolutionary War. One of my 2nd great grandfathers was WESLEY GARRETT (1828-1930), a very long-lived shoemaker. Another family of interest, and directly related were the Hon or Horn family, originally from Pennsylvania. These people were "German Dunkers" originally, and were against fighting in the Revolutionary War. They moved to where they thought they would be out of harm's way, and instead, my third great grandfather, Joseph Hon, Jr. and his mother and sister were kidnapped by Indians and British at Ft. Ruddles, KY (near what is Lexington today). Joseph Hon, Sr. became so unnerved at this development that he enlisted in a Virginia military unit to fight. His family was eventually returned to him following the Treaty of Paris in 1783.
Seeking info on Hale's of Pery County and Magoffin County. My gg grandfather (John Hale) was born 1808-1820 possibly in one of these Virginia counties: Grayson, Washington, or Wyhte. He is shown in the 850 census for Perry County, KY with his wife Sally (Sarah Fawbush) and the 1860 census for Magoffin County, Would like any info especially any that shows his and Sarah's whereabouts before 1850.
I have just learned how to do a website and have created one for Barnetts from KY.
I plan to add more documents at a later date, but need to get it going.
it is: http://www.barnetts-r-us.com Right now It may not come up in a search. I found it by Googling: "Barnetts in Kentucky". Please take a look at it!
Hello everyone. So glad to find a group from Kentucky. I myself am a 13th generation Kentuckian. The names I am researching are Miller, Martin, Welch, West, Burris, Smith, Coffey, Barnett and Duncan, just to name a few.
Welcome, question, I know my math is not good but Kentucky became a state in June 1792, just wondering how you can be 13 generations. Kentuckians did marry young sometimes.
Hello Julia. After reading your post I sat down to take a closer look. You are absolutly right. I am only the 9th generation to truely be considered a Kentuckian. So I stand corrected. LOL...the joys of genealogy.
Meant no disrespect but I am only a 5th gen Kentuckian and my Justinian Cartwright was in the 1790 census of KY. He is my Rev War Patriot and is from VA
Also I am 12 gen from 1620 of George Soule of the Mayflower, so I knew there was no Kentucky then.
Someone who has done some work with ELDER out there?
I wonder if perhaps you could help me with a little mystery...
Clara Levinia Whitfill (b. 19 Aug 1860, Grayson County KY; d. 13 Apr 1940, Jefferson County, KY)
daughter of Thomas Jefferson Whitfill and Elizabeth Ann Nokes.
was first married (14 Nov 1879 in Grayson County, KY) to Francis Greenberry Dalton (b. 10 May 1856, Breckinridge County, KY; d. 15 Apr 1898, Breckinridge County, KY)
The two had 8 children together for whom I can find record. (Indeed, one of them being my 2nd great grandfather)
Just recently I kicked over an internet rock and discovered a marriage record from 8 Aug 1905 for Clara L Dalton, daughter of TJ Whitfill and Elisabeth Whitfill, to a Leonard Elder born in 1845, son of Jno. and Rachel Elder.
He would have been 60 at the time, while she was 46.
I can find NO records of this man anywhere. No idea who he was beyond this one record.
When she died in Louisville in 1940, her name was given as "Clara Dalton" and she was eventually buried next to her first husband, Francis Greenberry Dalton, in St. Romuald Cemetery in Breckinridge.
So just when I thought I knew my 3rd great grandma, I find this little tidbit--do you have any idea who this Leonard Elder might have been? Perhaps he died soon after the marriage? Perhaps it was one of those brief marriages of convenience that sometimes happened back then (widow in need of support, older widower in need of domestic help)?

I posted more of the research notes on my webpages
I'm researching the following names in Kentucky: BARKER, HALL, JOHNSON, McCRAY, MEADE, SCHAFFNER, THOMPSON and WEBB.
These families are not related to each other. The Barker's I'm researching are from Elliott County, Kentucky and are my husband's father's family.
The families of Hall, Johnson, McCray and Meade are from Letcher and Floyd County and I'm researching them for a family friend.
The Schaffner and Webb family are my mother's side of the family. Schaffner are from Jefferson County, Kentucky and the Webb's and Thompson's are from Lawrence County, Kentucky.
I look forward to hearing from others researching these names.
I have just joined Genealogy Wise. In KY I am researching these surnames: Cochran/Cochrane, Winston, Stewart, Rigg, Garland, Musselman, Claxton, Moore, Doughty, Hendrickson, Baker.
I'm researching mainly in Graves & Hickman counties: Holland, Clark, Morgan, Midyett/Midgett. I'd love to hear from anyone with these connections in the area.
A before unknown cousin was located who is the great granddaughter of Henry Hale a brother to John Hale, my great grandfather. She stated that her mother (Mary Quinn) always told her and her brother they were not really Hale. They were AKERS. Her mother told them an Aker was adopted either by Henry Hale or his father John Hale, my great great grandfather.
Would any one know of any Acker/Aker/Akers that was taken in by a Hale family? Thanks for any help.
Virginia, my husband has alot of Barkers, Stevens/Stephens and Blevins in them. They are from Elliott, Carter, Rowan and Boyd Counties in KY. Older ones come from North Carolina. Maybe we can help each other. Have about decided to try and go the route of the Barkers for husband and son's Sons of American Revolution since we hit a brick wall in trying to find documentation needed for the Blevins. Good Luck.
My family names from KY are: Irvin, Proffitt, Isenberg all in the Monroe, Barren area. I am particularly looking for death-burial information on Dory Irvin, male, living in poor house in 1870 Monroe. All help is appreciated.
Looking for information on "Moore" family in Kitts or Harlan Co. Kentucky. Matt and Winnie Moore were my Grandparents, information on them is scarce. I hear its due to all the flooding and lost records as to the reason its hard to get information on anyone from this area.
I am researching the Rice family in Lawrence Co and Carter Co Ky, I am trying to locate the Parents of William C Rice b. abt 1828 in Ky married to Mary Polly Osburn. I am so trying find information on Robert Weaver and Mary Blythe Weaver their daughter Mary A Weaver married David A Bryant Lawrence Co Ky, their other daughter Catherine Weaver went to marry Anderson Rice son of Robert Rice. I am trying to Connect Robert to William since all three families lived close to each other in 1870s.
I have a Schmidt family who lived in Paducah, Kentucky from the time of their marriage in 1852 until they can to California in 1874. When my great uncle did work on this family he sourced the birth information of the children as the "Catholic Records Center". Is anyone aware of this repository? I haven't been able to come up with anything close through internet searches or reference books. I would have expected the records to have been in a Diocese. Thanks.

Are there any Acker, Aker, Akers, or Hale's in the KY group, or does anyone know of any of these surnames that have done a Y-DNA test, so I can compare my Y-DNA results?
Thanks for asking John. I have the same question for Frazier/Frazer/Fraysher/etc. If anyone with this last name has tested or is interested in testing, please feel free to contact me -- Paul Frazier Gerhart at paul.gerhart@case.edu
Our line came from Moccasin Creek, southwest VA about 1800 led by Solomon (b1773), George, Jonathan, Squire, and perhaps other Fraziers from Russell County (what is now Scott County), VA into what was then Floyd (now Letcher and Breathitt) County, KY.
Hi all! I am a "Geneablogger" and I have started writing about different people's ancestors for Treasure Chest Thursday. First week I wrote about my ancestor Jesse Vawter, from Madison, Indiana. Today I featured Abraham Wrightsman, an Underground Railroad conductor from near Kokomo. I am looking for more ancestors to spotlight. You can check out my blog at www.goinoverhome.blogspot.com or email me directly about your ancestor: KathrynAndrewsPotter@gmail.com
If you know someone with an ancestry.com membership (or your library or local Family History Library has one you can use), there is a listing for LonaStewart, born 1906,
Father:
William Barton Stewart
Mother:
Elizabeth 'Eliza' Gibson,
in a public family tree named "MATHIS DEMONBREUN Family Tree" (hopefully that's not you). Sorry, my subscription ran out about a month ago. Happy hunting!
FRAZIER and variant spellings. Tested Dad. I have Y-DNA matched for Floyd, Clay, Laurel, Johnson Counties in KY and Daviess County, MO and other areas of MO and Umatilla County, OR and from VA. Would really like to see Y-DNA for Russell and Scott County, Virginia to prove or disprove a connection. Thanks ~
Below is a comment I posted last November. If this looks promising, please let me know. I can provide more details on our 8 Frazier DNA matches. All are listed on Family Tree DNA (ftdna.com). Many of the locations you mention are on our list, but we also have several from Texas and California who came through Daviess County, MO..

I have matched y-DNA with families in the counties I have listed and I am trying to find out if John Frazier's children also match, which include Solomon, Squire, Jonathan, George, Joseph, James and William and the descendants. I too, have relatives that went to Oregon and California from Missouri. I have an exact match with a relative in California whose family is from Daviess County, MO. My great grandparents are buried in Olney Cemetery, Umatilla County, Oregon along with other relatives that are said to be descendants of John Frazier (Wiley Cope Frazier family). I will be doing an FTDNA test and a Genographic test in Sept when I go to another 100th birthday in Missouri to get more dna. I have an AncestryDNA test I put onto Ysearch #AK9PQ if that helps. Thanks~
It is an odd coincidence, but it appears that your father does NOT match or come close to matching the y-DNA for our Moccasin Creek, Scott County, VA Frazier family. I find this odd since the list of counties you provided has several points of overlap with our family, particularly Umatilla, OR; Daviess County, MO and Floyd County, KY.
Moreover, if you can trace your family to East Kentucky, I am doubly surprised we are not related because the late Mae Frazier of Lexington, who was undoubtedly THE Frazier expert in East Kentucky assured me that all Fraziers in East Kentucky before 1850 were surely related and descended from one of three brothers who came from SW Virginia around 1800.
You also mentioned Wiley Cope Frazier (b abt 1829, KY) who was my g-grandfather's brother. He migrated to Sonoma Co, CA about 1856, and on to Umatilla Co, OR about 1870. One of his descendants, Dean Frazier (y-Search ID = FVDXQ) is among my cousins who were tested at FTDNA. You can check his DNA against your Dad's.
I entered your y-Search ID (AK9PQ) and a number of matches appear, but none of them are my cousins who are descended from either George or Solomon Frazier of Russell (now Scott) Co. VA. If you wish to communicate further, you may want to e-mail me directly at paul.gerhart@case.edu so we can avoid clogging this list too much. I would be happy to provide any documentation I have on our Frazier family.

Thinking about KY mysteries,
we have 2 ELDER DNA kits which match the MAINE DNA
group, but are found in Madison Co KY - they listed the wrong ELDER ancestors, so we now need to find their MAINE connection.

Virginia Barker
BARKER, HALL, JOHNSON, McCRAY, MEADE, SCHAFFNER, THOMPSON and WEBB.

John Hale
Update on my research of my Hale line.

Betty Jo Blevins
Virginia, my husband has alot of Barkers, Stevens/Stephens and Blevins in them. They are from Elliott, Carter, Rowan and Boyd Counties in KY. Older ones come from North Carolina. Maybe we can help each other. Have about decided to try and go the route of the Barkers for husband and son's Sons of American Revolution since we hit a brick wall in trying to find documentation needed for the Blevins. Good Luck.

Looking for information on "Moore" family in Kitts or Harlan Co. Kentucky. Matt and Winnie Moore were my Grandparents, information on them is scarce. I hear its due to all the flooding and lost records as to the reason its hard to get information on anyone from this area.

Thanks.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Thanks ~

Hello Mary Frances,
Below is a comment I posted last November.

Thanks~

Paul Frazier Gerhart
Mary Frances,
It is an odd coincidence, but it appears that your father does NOT match or come close to matching the y-DNA for our Moccasin Creek, Scott County, VA Frazier family.
Kind regards,
Paul Frazier Gerhart
