Southeastern Kentucky

I just added a subdivision of this group called Southeastern Kentucky.

While I really enjoy THIS Kentucky site and I know it's helpful to a great many researchers, I felt it was a bit too broad for my interests. I have been working on the families of Southeastern Kentucky for many years, and would really like to hear from people working in this area. A few of us have been transcribing original source records.. On our web site we present Harlan County Marriage book A, , And soon to be completed and presented is Harlan County Marriage book 1. This material is available for viewing at the following web site.
http://www.cccgenealogy.com/Projects/

We have also extracted the very early tax records of Lee County Virginia and some name specific marriages in Lee County, but I prefer the South Eastern Kentuciy counties as the resource material is to plentiful.

The new Southeastern Kentucky group is for those interested specifically in Floyd, Perry, Harlan, Letcher, Clay, Leslie counties in Kentucky. This is part of the Cumberland Gap and part of Appalachia. When appropriate, our focus could be stretched to include Lee, Scott, and Wise counties in Virginia,

I felt creating single counties would be too limiting. as these families moved around (or the county lines moved around) often.

I hope some of you will find this site helpful.

Thanks, hope to see you there,
Gloria Kay Vandiver Inman

Hi, my mother's side of the family is all from Southeastern Kentucky.  Many of them came over the Cumberland through Pound Gap from Virginia and settled in Letcher and surrounding counties. I am looking for any info on Maggards, Mullins, Creech, Short, Vicars, Poston, and Webb.  In particular I am looking for the parents of Sovilah Maggard maiden name Mullins. born 1825.  She married John Henry Maggard. Many people have her parents as "Spotted" Dave Mullins and Virginia Short. But is that isnot accurate. They had a daughter named Surviller, but she wasn't born until around 1850. Sovilah is also known as Savilah and Cerviller. Many of them moved up to Carter, Rowan, and Elliot counties later on.

      Any information would be appreciated,

Gloria, are you related to the Vandiviers in Mercer County?  My ancestor was Richard Vandivier who married Elizabeth Peavler.  His grandfather was Cornelius Vanderveer.
