Never been to Australia, so I don't know if it's true; but I've long heard genealogy-wise, that many Australians, perhaps-tongue-in-cheek; celebrate their non-Puritan, Australian pioneer criminal ancestors?

Now I'm a descendant of one of three French-Canadian "Pelican Girls" sisters (poor, but good-family girls from France, sent by the King, so the French soldiers in Alabama would stop wedding Native American gals) who arrived old up-river Mobile, Alabama, 1704 aboard the good ship "Pelican".

The sister's mother was a Canadian "King's Daughter", not by their Burel father; but by her first marriage to a Canadian soldier, Dutcheron. There was once an old Mobile families, "Pelican Girls Society"; for those who descend that boatload of poor, but good girls; I think, gathered from convents 'round and about France.

Now New Orleans got it's own boatload of more cosmopolitan po'gals; I've seen the ship's name, but don't recall it. These gals were found not within, but without covenent's walls, 'round about the streets of Paris.

Some wed good Cresent City men and started good New Orleans families I believe. But me thinks; New Orleansians, may be less tongue-in-cheekie than down-under Australians.

I doubt we will ever see a FFNO society named after those gal's ship?

Hey, but why not; we don't get to choose our ancestors in Australia, old Mobile, or New Orleans; and all that genealogy jazz!

Come N.O. Carnival Time, that new heritage society idea might float--even be a float?

Hi James, welcome, I read your post with interest, I do celebrate my convict ancestry, I too understand the political reasons to why they were sent here, My youngest convict was a 14 year old girl, her one and only crime was to steal some cloth, her file is marked Irish rebel ? she never re-offended she married a British soldier (sounds like your Pelican girl don't you think ? ) we have some wonderful records that are available that give you so much detailed information that helped me build a profile on them, Did you know that in 1839 Convicts were sent to Tasmania and New South Wales from Upper Canada for taking part in rebellions against the British crown, The Convict Ship Buffalo departed from Quebec on 28th September 1839 and arrived here in Australia on the on 11th February 1840,. I too descend from Canadian ancestry as well as Irish, English and whatever else is yet to be found, I am proud of my ancestors and this nation, as you are proud of your history and that to me is worth celebrating. If you have any brick walls don't forget to look down under you never know what you might find lol, cheers Ellie

Decades ago when I'd just gotten out of the Navy, dad had a guest at his country club who was a reserve Navy Officer. Dad proudly told him I'd just gotten out of the Navy.

The reserve officer asked me what I was in the Navy? A "JO-3" I told him; that's an enlisted job, burt a rare one. This reserve officer had little real Navy experience knowledge, but we started talking Navy.

After a while he looked at me funny; "Is a JO-3 ,JUST an enlisted man?" Me: "Yeh!" He: "Ohhhhhhh...."; no more conversation from him, to this non-equal.

This steamed me and I later asked an ex-Navy officer I respected; how I could have better handled it better (I really meant, "put him down too., like he did me")?

The officer said when you meet his type; just tell him that in the Navy you weren't commissioned, that I was "straight salaried". The friendly officer said it does no good to quibble with people who thing like that.

So here is what I think that good Navy officer would suggest to you, should you meet a proud American who puffs his Puritan heritage, a bit much: tell them, "Like your Puritan ancestors were people of their convictions; mine were people of convictions too".
  • Anja van Steel

    Hi fellow genealogists/researchers.

I have specialised in photographing headstones in the goldfield region beyond Ballarat (not Ballarat itself). So far I have done about 20 cemeteries and taken close to 800,000+ pictures and still indexing them. Aside from my own photos I also have a fairly extensive library of photos within Victoria, lesser of NSW & SA.

I try to link the country cemetery family groups together, as many of the area have the same links.

Happy to help anyone that may need a photo I have on file.
  • Co Ordinator

    Hi to All

I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to Anja Van Steel who went out of her way to find some of my missing relatives in Ballarat Victoria.

It only takes a question to find some one on this site who is will enough to look something up and find that missing link for you.
This is why I have joined and like Anja, give out information that is there for some one who needs it, to just go that little bit further in their searching with in this social networking.

Anja I really thank you for your time in finding more of the family.

    Another h*** has been filled.

  • M. Denise Golding

My husband has the Gee line in his family. They come from Cambridgeshire and married into the Golding family, migrated to South Australia. We don't have any 'recent' Gees, but do have some of the 'oldies' from about 1774 - 1871. I haven't got round to checking if any of the 'rellies' came out under the Gee name, but have the South Australian B.M.D. records in the Family History Centre, so I'll have a look Friday when I'm in on duty. If you think they could be of interest, let me know. Denise
  • Albertus Lang

  • Identity Crisis

    Hello All
I haven't done much research for several years but took the opportunity this week to visit the NSW State Record Archives at Kingswood. I only went for one piece of information which should have taken me only 1 hour but as with all research this one piece of information led on to others and four hours later I left the State Archives with so much more than just one piece of information. The staff were fantastic and would advise anyone who can get to the repository themselves it is worth the experience. I could have purchased the document from their web site but doing the research in person saved me $23AUD. and no postage. I did have to pay for my travel from Central West NSW but I was headed to Sydney for other reasons and stopping at Kingswood was a bonus.

Are there any Australian genealogists out there with a Google Wave account who would like to communicate using this new tool?

I have an account and want to play but the young man who gave me my invitation and I don't share too many interests (apart from an interest in technology). I am bibliaugrapher@googlewave.com. Please let me know if you are able to ride a wave with me.
  • Andrew D. Kemp

    Hi Geniaus,

I definitely share interests with you and would love to participate in the Google Wave experiment. However, I am still awaiting my invite. Would you be able to send through an invite so we can experiment?

    Kind regards,
    Andrew
  • Carmel M Reynen

Not sure how many use the online electoral rolls on Ancestry but have just notice they now go to 1954
  • Michelle Watson

@Geniaus - I'd love to give it a go but I too am waiting for an invite.
  • Geniaus

From @geneabloggers on Twitter: Wow! Family Bible printed 1610 with Australian HOLMES family data - bid on Ebay up to $648 US! http://bit.ly/44Qvxu
  • Michelle Watson

I've found that if you search for "parchment" or "vellum" on Ebay you quite often get alot of indentures or other sorts of documents that would be of assistance to family historians.

    Hi,
I have just joined this group. I live in Tassie and have only been researching for a couple of years. Researching families from Ireland (Wigmore, Farrell, Doyle, Lynas, Smith), England (Worker, Wines, Pentecost, Briggs, Clayton, Waxham and others) & Scotland (McHard, Wilson, Liston & Safely)...There are others but off the top of my head I can't list them all.
    Cheers,
    Carolyn

  • Geniaus

Liz, I have been watching for member 200 all day.

At the moment there are 638 Australians registered on Genealogy Wise. I try to invite them all to join our group but am sure I miss some. It seems as though many of them join and then don't come back.

Members, Please invite your friends to join us.

  • Carly Reimann

Hi there, my name's Carly and I'm a Local History Officer at Tea Tree Gully Library in SA. I've been researching my family tree for about a year and a half now. Looks like I just missed being the 200th member here, but oh well :)

Most of my ancestors migrated to SA from England and Germany, but there seem to be a couple that ended up in Huon, Tasmania - Walter George Edwards (b.1894) being one that I am particularly interested in finding out more about.

Aside from that, the main families I have been researching in my family tree are Reimann, Wittwer, Wolf, Pfitzner, Mccann, Edwards, Riggs and Kellaway. Feel free to contact me for any more information or if you have something that might help me!
  • Co Ordinator

Welcome aboard Carly and hope that you find information that you are looking for and what an interesting position you have at the Library nearly all at your finger tips.
I hope that you find what you are looking for within this group, I certainly have of late.

Got a Tasmanian Convict in your tree?
I have been contacted by Claudine Chionh who says "I am a developer on the Founders and Survivors project which aims to bring academics and genealogists together in tracing convicts in Tasmania, and their descendants."
You can contact Claudine through the site."
  • Liz Pidgeon

Has anyone been watching Who Do You think you are ?
  • Bobby

I watched last night. Hadnt watched the other Aussies in the current series but thought that Maggies ancestry was pretty interesting. Bankruptcy, Poems, Vineyards, gold and a few marriages kept me watching.
  • BOB MAY

saw the first one on the footy coach and part of last nights.
wouln't it be great to have those recourses at your beck and call.
both had insteresting and surprises in their family history
    bob
  • Carmel M Reynen

I have watched the whole series and have enjoyed it all. Must say I get a bit frustrated at the round about way they appear to do things but I think it is done more for the interest of the show rather than how it should be done. I could not work out why Maggie could not find the mother of the bigamists children, if followed correctly she would have been picked up very easily in NSW registers.
  • Julie L

Does any one out their know where to look for information about PMG (Post Masters General) Contracts for clearing Post Office Boxes in the 1955 to 1965in the Goulburn NSW area
  • Geniaus

A record search of The National Archives of Australia site brings up many records relating to the Postmaster General's Department. You would need to try a few appropriate keywords to narrow your search for those records you need.
  • Geniaus

Thanks to Bobby for his kind offer of assistance in Offers of Help by SKAS discussion.

If you are able to do lookups etc please add your offer to the list.
  • Julie L

Thanks Geniaus I have checked The National Archives Australia and have sent a Email to Fiona in Sydney in regard to the PMG records and am now awaiting a reply
  • Carmel M Reynen

Shauna Ballarat have been asked to have a stall at the Ballarat Show in a week or so. I am betting we will be very busy that weekend!
  • Christine O'Grady

How do I find this forum to ask for help in please?
IF YOU WANT HELP/LOOK UPS POST IT HERE discussion forum.
I just posted two messages but I have no idea where they went or how to find them or how to see replies, and I can't find the forum above to ask for a look up!
Must be getting stupid in my old age, or else the stress of family history research is taking it's toll!
So this time I thought I'd try a comment. It could take me a while to get the hang of this whole site and each group!
  • Geniaus

Christine - I understand your frustration - one of the problems is that when people add new discussions then those like IF YOU WANT HELP/LOOK UPS POST IT HERE disappear down the list. I wish that, as administrator I could keep the more general discussions at the top and visible but that isn't possible :-((

Another problem is that posts in the discussion are listed with the latest post last and the oldest post first so your new posts can be way doen at the bottom or at the end of a few pages.

Hang in there - there are some really helpful members of this group who will manage to find your query and who will, hopefully, render assistance.
  • William Douglas

I am just experimenting with Google Wave - and have not been able to find out how to invite others to join my wave - so, so far not so good!

This is me dou999 @ googlewave dot com

I have just put up a blog on the subject as i think it may have lots of benefits for genealogy researchers.
