Anyone attending The Society of Australian Genealogists Lost in Black Sheep - Weekend in Orange, NSW? I'd love to hear a report.
  • Fred Shelley

No, I am not, but I did attend the 2 lectures given by Michael Gandy on English research recently, organised by SAG. So much information in that man, could not listen and write it all down. It would be good if they could record it and release a cd. Unfortunately that time there was a problem with the PA and Michael was talking not from notes but his incredible memory.

As an ex soldier on days such as these I tend to get a very large lump in my throat and have a tendency not attend these services.
But it does not stop me from standing tall at that hour to respect those that fort for our countries and the friends that I lost.

  • Lynette

Thank you for your service, Wayne.

Useful Blog Post by group member Carole Riley today
When you can’t find the birth, death or marriage in the indexes
  • Geniaus

Are you a lurker? If you haven't introduced yourself to the group - please post a short message - it may result in some worthwhile connections for you.
  • Erica

I didn't intend to lurk :) I'm battling a dying computer which is off more than it's on just now - I'm pleased to be here and have already followed some interesting links that were new to me.
    My main family names are:
Sutherland - Caithness to Chippendale NSW (mainly John Sutherland MLA)
connected to the Sutherland name is Oag who also came to Balmain NSW
Spalding - Lanark SCT to Balmain NSW
Mackay - SCT to Sydney and Goulburn areas
Chapman - Co.Cork IRE to Sydney
Very soon I hope to find time to update my Rootsweb information and I'm also starting a couple of blogs for my family research, I used to write web pages but find blogs so much easier to update
    Also:
Geniaus - I'm wondering how you would like us to post our information -
is it better to create a discussion topic for listing family information, it's really hard to find anyone in the comments but if we all start discussions it will soon become swamped too.
    Thanks
  • Francene Thompson

I spend hours searching for my descendants & cannot seem to get any answers. Trying to find a birth certificate for my GGrandfather Henry de Daunton b Menangle Douglas Park NSW 1848.( willing to pay for it) from BDMs NSW but I get no hits, have tried all ways of spelling the name, NO LUCK. anyone able to give me any clues.Would greatly appreciate it. Francene
  • BOB MAY

    Hi Francene
    Menangle Douglas Park NSW 1848
This as an address does not seem to fit
Menangle was a village servicing Camden Park conected to railway in 1863
I think Douglas Park is a more modern development for that area, maybe even c 1900's
How sure are of the information that you are searching from? Were his parents born in Australia?
V18482121 65/1848 LE BRETON HENRY GEORGE MARGARET
found this by searching for Henry 1848

Hi, it's taken me a while to get here, but I'm joining the Aussie group. Haven't got anything to comment on at the moment. Interesting to read the comments.

    Welcome to our community Jan

  • Geniaus

Welcome to the group, Jan. Hope that your membership bears fruit.
  • Jan Westcott

Hi and thanks. I too hope that there'll be some info out there somewhere.
  • Geniaus

Shauna, It is frustrating. Every so often I do a site search using the terms Australia or Australian. This produces quite a few hits but unfortunately they are not listed chronogically. If they were then we could make a task to check each week or so. I just did the search and found some Australian surname groups and a picture of a ship one of my convicts came on. It would also be good if one could subscribe to an RSS feed for the site using the term Australia. I am going to try setting up a Google News alert using the terms genealogywise and Australia or australian and see if that works. Will let you know if that bears fruit.
  • Bobby

I mentioned on twitter recently i wasnt going to vote in some Genealogy awards that was happening with an American? ancestry magazine - I first looked for any Aussies in the running, wasnt, so i didnt vote. Yep i'm patriotic for sure and want see more Australian stuff coming together, more lists, more groups etc, etc. I also wrote on my blog (when i first started blogging) about the lack of Aussies ancestry blogs, but its also up to the folks that have these blogs to promote themsleves and Australia etc, and not everyone knows how to do this, or is interested in doing this. We also have a small population to consider.

    Enough ramble....
  • Carmel M Reynen

I also put my name down on Ancestry to help with others genealogy, but australia was not in the list of pages. I wrote to Ancestry and let them know that it is very popular in australia and also there are a number of ex-pats trying to trace Australian ancestry. they informed me it is coming!!!
  • Roberta Baum

I grew up in WV, as did most everybody on my grandmother's side. I am an only but lived with my mother's two sisters' families who, altogether, had seven kids. I was either the third and youngest in one family or the fourth in the other. Kinda crowded.
  • Royce Leonard Beale

I am reseaching the Beale Family originaly from Tasmania. Also the Bartrop family also from Tasmania (convict) 1836, on the Lady Nugent. As well as the Jones family.

  • Geniaus

A new group member has decided to remain anonymous. I am in a quandary - although I and some other group members hide under a pseudonym we allow others to see our profiles and give out information that may identify ourselves. How do others feel about having a group member who does not reveal anything about him/herself to the group?

I have not invited any GenealogyWise members with restricted profiles to join our group as, by restriciting their profiles, they have indicated a resistance to sharing.

I see the prime purpose of this group as a forum for sharing information openly and am uncomfortable about having members who are merely voyeurs. That is not in the Aussie spirit of a "fair go".

Please let me know what you think.
  • Peter Beck

I would like to request that when members offer their services for help that, if they cannot be of any assistance, they respond with the relevant message. I have placed two such requests and received no reponse. This gives the impression that they perhaps fall into a void.
  • Geniaus

Peter, Perhaps a direct message to the volunteer rather than a reply to a forum/discussionmay elicit a response. Unfortunately one of the issues with the software used for GenealogyWise is that messages can be easily hidden/ lost.
  • BOB MAY

    Geniauas
i am totally against anonomous membership. I would prefer that if psuedonym's are used the profile give some name either christian suename or maiden name.
When you look at it Genealogy is about names. And what is the resean to hide a name on a genealogy forum????
    Bob
  • Peter Beck

Geniaus thanks for your response. However my first request was to the forum and, when it was pointed out that this should be directed to a volunteer I forwarded the same request to a volunteer. I should point out that the request to the volunteer was a few months ago.
  • Ian Clements

Just joined and hoping some use will become of it. Can help from time to time with lookups (NBI England & Wales, 1881 British Census, AVRI, English Parish Records, 1861 Census - Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire specific records). Not able to get on line as often as I would like. Regards to all.
  • Albertus Lang

Yes I agree with the idea that we are here to help each other is that not right ,would like to see who i am answering to don't you think,Happy new Year to all on List.
  • Erica

I'm also against totally anonymous membership, I started off with a pseudonym but decided on using my first name and I have information in my profile. However having said that, I know a lot of people who are new to the net who are very paranoid about what they give out about themselves, could you request a little more information from them, perhaps add a note in the group description that anonymous membership is not acceptable.
  • Penelope Bell

I don't think anonymity is appropriate in this sort of group. Genealogy involves activities that deny anonymity to all those whose details we record and therefore, I think, we have to reveal something of ourselves. So members of this group need to be prepared to volunteer at least minimal information and those not prepared to do this, sadly, should choose not to belong.
