Hello I'm Alison from Queensland. I've been researching for 20 odd years, especially since the advent of the internet has made life easier and more fun for genealogists.
My project at the moment is researching descendants of Irish immigrants who settled in NSW who are connected with my family tree. It seems that a lot of the families knew one another as is evidenced by bdm records.
Of convict ancestry - I have four direct line ancestors (that I know of) who were transported 'here'.
G'day All,
I have been travelling and haven't had time for family history! I was thrilled to notice today that we now have 243 group members. Welcome to those who have recently joined. I look forward to welcoming our 250th member soon.
I just had a look at The Society of Australian Genealogists new web page that is maintained by one of our group members, Carole Riley.
Congratulations, Carole, on your sterling work.
Hi, I am the latest member. Have been researching on and off for about 30 years. My 'brick wall' is a Thomas Ash born London 1830, by profession a seaman. Known to have sailed to Australia and New Zealand but where he ended up unknown. Over the years I have found many 2nd and 3rd cousins around the world and am sure I will find more. I now live in a small town in NSW.
it was a great day Shauna, have a lot to report back to our committee and more info for out newsletter!! Good to chat to people, in person, that you only seem to meet on line
It's been very quiet on the list lately so I thought that I'd say hello. Please use the list to pass on news of events or new resources and use the discussions to connect with other researchers.
If you haven't introduced yourself yet please do so.
Hi Everyone,
I am researching my various ancestors who came to Australia between the 1830s and 1850s. The names I am researching are:
Jarretts and Barnes of Brede Sussex (assisted settlers to Shoalhaven region some later moving to the Northern Rivers region in Northern NSW)
Knights of Arundel Sussex, arrived on Neptune 1844, settled in the Shoalhaven region. Became the first Post Master of Ulladulla.
Crawfords of Ballymore Ireland, arrived on Nabob 1855, settled in Nowra region.
Jeffreys of Penzance Cornwall, arrived on the General Hewitt 1848, settled Bodalla / Moruya NSW.
Jaunceys of Herefordshire, James arrived on Lady Harewood 1832 and his son John arrived on Asia 1833, both convicts to Australia. John settled Bega region.
Carew of Tipperary Ireland, arrival date unknown pre 1842, settled Goldburn NSW (may have been a female convict).
Farrells of Moyvalley Kildare Ireland, arrived on the Susan 1839, settled in East Maitland the Hunter Valley.
LLoyds of St Munster, Claire Ireland, arrived on the Kate 1851, settled in Hinton NSW.
Richards of St Buryan Cornwall, arrival date unknown but pre 1887, settled Glenn Innes NSW.
Pietsch of Schlesien Germany, arrived on Leontine 1848, settled Muckleford Vic (via Gawler SA).
Hell (Hall or Hull) of Howstorf Germany arrived on the Victoria 1848, settled with Pietsch.
Looking forward to chatting with anyone researching the same families.
JAFFREY / LAUDER descendants: I'm Joanne & I'm looking for relations descended from union of John Smart JAFFREY (born in Scotland; dod Oct 1903) & Catherine LAUDER (born 21 July 1823 Bonadventure, Quebec, Canada & passed 20 Aug 1899 in Payneham, South Australia), who may possess pics of buriel sites, people, group shots, etc.
Two years ago I did 2 genealogy online courses, 1 being the Aus & NZ course and the other on Eastern European Ancestors. My only mistake was doing the 2 of them in the same month, however despite that, I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone. Irrespective of how long you have been researching, there are always new things to learn. Kerry Farmer is excellent as a lecturer and always ready to give tips and point us in the right direction when we need it. I still find it a great reference point for when I get stuck or just need that new link to look at. I am sure you will get a lot of enjoyment from doing this course.

This website is about not only the convicts but also their families and descendants. It is easily navigated and looks very interesting and useful for Australian genealogy.

I'm into Week 3 of the NIGS Australian and New Zealand Genealogy course and can recommend the tutor, Kerry Farmer, her course material and the course. If you are a beginning genealogist and would like to learn about Australian Resources this course provides a convenient way to learn. I have blogged about some of my experiences at http://geniaus.blogspot.com
I notice that Liz Pidgeon has listed a number of genealogy events being held in Melbourne in the coming months. If you are in the vicinity it would be worthwhile to check the list on Liz's page..
It's winter - are we all hibernating? There hasn't been a lot of group action lately. How about sharing a favourite resource or publicising a local event?
Well I have been busy doing a family tree group at Facebook so all my family members can go see whas relevant to them.Been able to find new info on one of my branches so was very exciting,
Been a warm winters day up here in Bundy,
I must admit to not being very keen to post Family Tree details on Facebook. I prefer to have my tree on the Tribal Pages website where I can have more control over who can access what. I upload family tree photos to that site also. I keep my Facebook information to an absolute minimum.
Hi Rosemary at FB you can create groups where you can make private and invite only ones you know are part of the tree. They are the only ones who can see your pictures and infoi also,.Its the same as on your own page it can be made private too. I have mine private.Only reason I did it at FB is many of my cousins are distant relations are there and were keen to see some family pics and info.I have my tree at other places too but have found this is a simpe way for me to share without them having to jhooin other sites.I have had great responce.
Btw I have a Dyer in my family.Way back on great great grans side I think.
Hi Rosemary, I too have my information on FB as our family are spread from one side of Oz to the other as well as overseas. This allows us all to see the latest photos and catch up on what each other is doing. I have my settings set to private so only those who have been invited have access to any information and it is a great way to see the latest photos of the grandchildren.
I'm happy for people I don't know but who might be related to see my Family Tree details (of deceased relatives) which they can do on Tribal Pages and I also have photos on Facebook available to friends only but I still won't put other information on there. However, if I make the Family Tree details available only to friends on FB it's limiting researchers who aren't on my friends list. I guess it's just a case of choice in the end. I've spent a lot of years on the internet and have always been extremely careful of just how much information I let lose.
Janelle, my Dyers are from Birmingham and I haven't been able to get past my grandparents on that side because none of us know anything about my grandfather other than his name. I've had much more success with the Scottish side of the family.
Hi again Rosemary. My g.g.g.grandma was Susannah Jane Dyer she married a Stanbridge. She arrived here in 1858 and died in 1886 in NSW. I dont know where she was born but her hubby was from Goudhurst in Kent .Be fun to get a connection.
Ps they had 10 kids I have their names also.
Hi girls
I have a Martha Elizabeth DYER b c 1854 ? m 16/11/1881 Talia Station SA d 25/12/1922 Talia Station (Charles MAY) and a
Thelma DYER m Perth (divorced) to Errol Leanard PETERS
As far as I know we're the only Dyers in our line that came to Australia. I found only a couple of weeks ago that my father had a younger brother and I know nothing about him other than he appears with the family in the new 1911 Census. Having said that though it doesn't mean that he didn't come here. We used to thing we were the first ones on my Mother's side of the family to come here until I found that my great great great grandmother was a convict sent here in 1847 so nothing is certain!
Hi Bob be great to find a connection with all 3 of us.Will hav eto keep searching. So you cant trace your Dyers back too far then Rosemary?
Are your Dyers relations Bob or just by marriage?
Just recently I have been following up with the name Perabo.A year or so back I discovered it was my gggrandmothers maiden name and she and her family came to Australia on the Caesar. Her father and 2 brothers passed away from Cholera b4 they arrived.
What I found out \last week was even tho they came from Germany (alot of Perabos there and Italy also) The origanal Perabo was actually from Spain.
If anyone else has a connection to the Perabo name please let me know.
My father was a Dyer but he was born in 1900 and his father appears to have died before 1901 when his mother is listed as a widow. As she died in 1912 and my father in 1948 and his 2 sisters are also now gone we only have vague reminisces passed on by one of my aunts to my cousin. Not knowing the date of birth even of his father makes it really difficult to know where to start. We're also not convinced that there was actually a marriage as we've found no record of that either. I suppose another starting point would be the elder brother, William, but William Dyer was quite a common name in those parts. I tend to do the genealogy in "fits and starts" and will probably get into it when the mania hits me again lol
I think most of us researchers do it by fits and starts as well Rosemary lol.I iwll have a dig around see if I can uncover anything.never know we may hook the tree up somewhere.
This group will be a year old in a week or two. I am preparing a post on my blog about GenealogyWise and have been reading through old messages and discussion board posts.
A theme that emerges is one of generosity - members of our group have gone to great lengths to help each other with lookups and suggestions. Thanks to each of you for your contributions. At the risk of offending others I am going to offer a special thanks to member Wayne who has put in amazing work on behalf of others.
I look forward to another year of demolishing (brickwalls that is).
Thank you for the invitation to join this group. I am originally from N.Z.My name interests are Wilson's from Lincolnshire,Philip from Scotland and N.Z.,Ott from Germany and N.Z.,Hollings from Germany and England,Scotney from England,Richardson from London and Scotland,Huet from London and France,Bolton from Plymouth, .I have done research for other family members on Easter from Essex,Saunders from South end on Sea,Earring from Essex,Lodge from Essex,King from Essex. Some trees the paper trail has been relatively easy, whilst others has taken a long time with a lot of help from other researchers from around the globe which I really am thankful for and appreciate.
