Guild of One-Name Studies

The Guild of One-Name Studies is the world's leading genealogical organisation for one-name studies. This group is not restricted to Guild members, and is open to everyone with an interest in one-name studies.

This seems to be a good way of putting faces to names that are familiar, but only as names. Perhaps more members could upload photos?
  • Jennie Fairs

    Hi Keith,

Following your lead, I have set up a group for my Edenborough ONS and will look forward to inviting and finding new contacts thru this medium.
    Jennie.

I've set up my BOXALL group. But I received a friend request from a DearMYRTLE anyone know who this is or what "second Life Genealogy" is? don't want to add just anyone if I want to stay focused on my ONS. It will be great to put faces to names although I do have several of the guild on my facebook friends.

Ol' Mryrtle's homepage is at http://www.dearmyrtle.com/

She's been around a looong time, with a website, online tutorials, podcasts, mailing list ...
  • Richard Dexter

This may be a record. Within 30 minutes of establishing a DEXTER group I had a request to join.
  • Mary Seager

I have just added some unknown photos to my site trying to find someone who might be related to someone in the photos. Only one, Beddington CC has names attached to it.
  • Laraine Hake

Help please! I have set up a group which now has 3 members (!) but cannot really figure out how this whole site is meant to work! Are there any instructions or help notes that I could be looking at?

    Many thanks
  • Wendy Archer

Not yet, Laraine - though Debbie's working on an FAQ page. I'm happy to chat on the phone or on chat here.

    Wendy
  • Debbie Kennett

In case anyone is wondering I'm not the one who is doing the FAQs! There are lots of Debbie's here on GW, one of whom, Debbie Anne Jackson, is an administrator, and she's the one who's liaising with the GW staff. The groups all seem to be going well, and it's really good to see that we are already one of the largest groups here. It will be good publicity for the GOONS when the site is officially launched later this week.
  • Wendy Archer

    Sorry, Debbie, no confusion intended!

and, folks, there's a chat room on the bottom right - you can "pop it out" to be a window you can put anywhere on your screen.
It gives the possibility of private or public chat.
  • Laraine Hake

I realise it is very early days yet, but does anybody have any thoughts or hopes as to how they will use the Wall of their Group's page - other than the obvious of finding new contacts that is.............. What would you hope for, long term?
  • Wendy Archer

There is now a group for GW Admins at http://www.genealogywise.com/group/groupadmins
  • Trevor Penfold

Is there a standard that GOONS folk are adopting when setting up their surname groups on GenealogyWise? How are we indicating that the surname study is associated with GOONS? Have we set up our groups so that if anyone searches on 'groups' with GOONS all surname GOONS groups are listed?
  • Trevor Penfold

I have added 'GOONS' to the group location and it works well
  • Anne Shankland

I've done the same with my SHANKLAND group. Let's hope this becomes the standard for one-name groups associated with the Guild!
  • Maureen Kenchington

I just added GOONS as the location for my WAYCOTT group - I can't believe it was so simple! I was expecting to have to cut and paste URLs or do something technical. No, just type GOONS in the location box and it's done!
  • Anne Cole

GOONS added as location for the Duncalf ONS. As Maureen said, simple; I can do simple!
  • Laraine Hake

    Hmmmmmmmm Me too!
  • John Laws

    Anne
    I can't even do simple!

What is meant by adding GOONS as a location for one's group Ohh! I'm still asleep
  • Wendy Archer

Surname groups are now a category in the groups drop down menu.
  • John Laws

Oh that! the Laws Family ONS group has been there since day one, Thanks Wendy
  • Clifford Kemball

Can you add more than one location. I orginally set mine to "Worldwide". Then I changed it to "GOONS". Ideally I would like to use both.

I have looked at the surname group listing and it is interesting to see that the Guild of One-Name Study group is not listing. Do you think it should be listed even though it is not a single surname group?
    Cliff
  • Wendy Archer

    Cliff -

My understanding is that there is an intent to have a Society listing also, in which the Guild should figure.
I think having the Guild listed in the surname groups also is an excellent idea - would you like me to take this forward?
    Wendy
  • Clifford Kemball

    Wendy
Yes I would be grateful if you could take it forward.

  • Steven Whitebread

Yes, I think I can report some success with my Whitebread and Whitbread One-Name Study Group. I currently have 31 members, including about 8 new contacts. I have added an index to all of the different families known to me, with links from this to separate discussions for each family. I have added descendency charts and family tress for each, and through this I getting lots of new material. I am kept very busy with this site.
